bernadette woods is tracking these scorching temperatures. first let's begin in baltimore, he has the latest on these power outages. >> reporter: most people are going to be without power for a while now. the clean up continues because that's in so many trees like this one waiting to be cleared out. this road completely blocked as the storm came through packing a hurricane strength punch without any of the warning that comes with a hurricane. with power out for a second day in a row many people are getting out for a look at lines. >> that's why we don't have any power, because it looks like that line is down. >> reporter: the strongest heat snap of the year so far. >> that's really a big danger over the next few days. is especially vulnerable populations and senior citizens. >> hundreds of crews are being brought in to repair transformers. like this one in northwest baltimore. >> this could have fell that way and i doesn't so it's a blessing in disguise. >> reporter: those still in the dark may be waiting a while. >> what we're saying here is

bernadette woods and marty bass. >> good afternoon, bernadette. >> good afternoon. it is ending on a much cooler note. still in check. we managed a high of 86 degrees. it is only 80 in big and 88 in ocean city. >> -- 80 in baltimore. and 88 in ocean city. still the chance for showers and thunderstorms. for two different storm systems out there. we have this one offshore that brought storms to the area yesterday. it is a front out to the west that will take a day to get out here. >> it is going to be unsettled and they remain a possibility. you can see in southern parts of the state we have that right now. for the next couple of days we send it out to marty. take a look at graphic that we will show you the frontal boundary that bern was talking about. it will take awhile to press through the region. we have a traffic jam along the coast and it accordians and impacts inland. high pressure is going to come in. we are not going to dry out and cool down. we will clear out but not until we get to thursday. it as slow go passage at best. what lays ahead for the week's end

bernadette? >> okay. so we're going to go right to doppler radar and show you there are thunderstorms as you were saying, coming down from the north. and they're getting pretty close to the beltway. but they are weakening as they move our direction. i want to put it into motion. they're almost expanding more so than moving. and their movement is slow, maybe about 20 miles to the east/southeast. but what we're seeing is a couple of thunderstorms that popped up over southern parts of pennsylvania, drifted over to the maryland side. and have been starting to weaken and expanding into more showers than thunderstorms. you can see that leading edge, just to the northwest of perry hall, just to the north of towson and north of the beltway right there. and it's coming a little more so for finks burg. there's another area that has pond up on the eastern shore. couple of thunderstorms now dying down into showers. and this gust front, which is also prompting more showers and gusts of winds, 20 to 30 miles per how, -

bernadette has a look at the temperatures and what we expect later on in the day. bernadette? >> it's going to be in the 90s. the record is 101 and we could tie or even break that next hour and tomorrow, forecasting a higher heat. it's probably going to be closer to low 70s for the dew point. make it feel like 106 tomorrow. the record is 102 degrees but the other thing with the high humidity in place is that there's a front coming in with that and strong to severe thunderstorms. of course, if any watches warnings come about, we'll have that. >> first warning weather coverage continues. derek valcourt with the growing health dangers from this heat. derek? >> reporter: it can make folks miserable, kai. city officials opened up pools for an extra hour today and tomorrow as they deal with another code red day and folks trying to beat the heat. everyone has their own words for it. >> miserable. >> scalding. >> sticky. >> reporter: all you have to do step outside to feel the effect. >> sweat. my hair goes crazy. you know, i can't even wear make-up. no one is wearing anything on thei

good afternoon, bernadette. >> good afternoon. this is one of the days you want to be smart about the heat. we have a heat advisory in effect until 9:00. already today temperatures at 95, those dew points are way up since yesterday. when you factor that together, it already feels like 103 in baltimore, 105 in elkin, 106 ocean city. this is a very hot, very uncomfortable day. take a look at this graphic. this is a stretch of days but definitely the peak. the record today is 102, we're going to be close to that. we're going for a high of 101. that's not the only thing we're going to be dealing with today. the chance for some severe weather. for more on that we send it out to tim. >> reporter: the dew points are high, the moisture is high. we have a lot of fuel in the atmosphere for any thunderstorms that may fire up through the afternoon. let's take a look. radar show s that we have a front that's to our north that's going to be pushing into this region. that's the trigger for the storms. add that to the fuel that's already in place

i'm ted williams, wjz news. >>> let's check in with bernadette woods.ice break from the sun today, wasn't it? >> it really was. so many events going on outdoors. there's the big la cross tournament going on. >> it's huge. >> some rain during the morning hours, but it held off for the rest of the day. still some showers and thunderstorms out there. they're coming in from the west. these are scattered about. they're not moving very quickly. if you're not underneath one of these, there's no rain. we haven't seen much rain, but some of these will hold on and bring us showers tomorrow morning. this is what we're dealing with most of the afternoon after that morning rain, just a couple of showers and thunderstorms out there, like we said, just scattered about. we may see some fog form overnight. 76 degrees is where we sit right now. a very mild night out there. we did manage a high of 84, but that's it. below average. however, after all of this clears one those temperatures will start climb and we'll be way above average, close tore those records in the middl

meteorologist bernadette woods live with an updated look at live doppler radar. i think i had six rain drops fall on my car. >> a couple of places got thunderstorms or two. we're in the summertime pattern but we're not going to have a dry radar most of these days, nothing like yesterday. we're showing you first doppler radar. more to our north in pennsylvania. they seem to be dying down. a few could hold together. it's not as strong as the ones were yesterday. while all this is going on and that front did move through and move out of here. temperatures are down a little bit from yesterday. pretty average for july, 86 is where we sit right now. 82 in cumberland. the dewpoints also come down from the 70s of yesterday. we do have a front that's going to increase our chances of showers and storms. we'll have that coming up. >>> viking and maryland could get a little more safe. more than $3 million of grant money was just awarded to several parts of the state. we'll tell you how baltimore will use its portion. >> reporter: keith morris loves to ride in the city but sa

let's go to meteorologist testimony women and bernadette woods -- tim williams and bernadette woods. >> good afternoon. we'll take you right to the doppler. here is a linep storms, many of them triggering severe warnings as they are moving across into central maryland, moving across a diagonal from the northwest to the southeast. we'll give you an idea of what is moving in our direction. the one moving more toward the baltimore metro area is this one. by about 4:00, it will head to chestnut, liberty, unionville and 245 will be moving in in the -- and that will be moving in in the next hour or so. this storm will be triggering storms as it's moving across the region. as one county is lifted, another will be added to the severe warning. take a look at our watches and warnings. the entire area for the most part except for the lower eastern shore is under a severe thunderstorm watch for theern tire area. currently we have severe warnings for carroll and frederick counties. that's because the storms are moving on through the region. the one for washington county has been lifted and the on

meteorologist bernadette woods she's over here as well.e've been watching them trying to tackle the situation right off of balogna. they had a huge tree that fell on these power lines and the tree trimmers showed up a little bit ago. >> reporter: a little earlier, regina just missed it but there was a bge truck here. >> i want to go to my neighborhood next. >> it's not just them. that's the problem. there's just so many people still without power. because this storm was a story. it's such a big one. this is one that we'll be doing case studies on for a long time because everything came together in the meteorology world for a long time. this is what it looked like coming through because this was just such a big one. this was from top to bottom across the state that originated in iowa and illinois. so it he'll together over the mountains and strengthened at some point over maryland. as it moved out to sea it finally started to weaken but the damage was left behind. what this storm is called is a duratio. we don't get them a lot around here.

live first warning weather coverage continues bernadette woods has an explainer of this unusual storm, bern this was ferocious. >> this was one of the worst we have seen as people continue to talk about it we will revisit the storm once again. this is what it looked like on radar a solid line of thunderstorms wiping across the entire state. those bright colors those are where the highest wind gusts were the biggest thing with this storm was how widespread and strong it was. and the term, to cover what happened is called a dorasio is. a widespread, damaging wind storm with sustained wind for a long period of time. we get wind gusts in a thunderstorm when they continue county after county, state after state that is what we mean by long period of time winds, must exceed the severe level they have to be above 58 miles per hour. for a wrap up of this storm it touched everybody from iowa, straight down to north carolina, so far, 18 deaths reported with this storm, winds in our area over 70 miles per hour, that equates it to hurricane strength storm, and from the mid-atlantic back to the mid
