news channel 8's peter bernard just got on scene as well. peter, any idea how the fire started? >> reporter: so far not. they haven't been able to go in because it's too hot. let me tell you this is an icon in this neighborhood. it's called big and deals. supermarket. from my calculation it is a total loss. you can see behind me that the firefighters are still working, but our best view comes from eagle 8 hd. you got a taste of it a moment ago. big and deal supercenter, a check cashing center and a pharmacy here. the fire call came in around 9:15. they had to call out a second unit five minutes later. that is a two alarm fire at that time. it has since been upgraded to a three alarm fire. we have extra units called rescue. right now there are aerial units putting water on the roof and in talking to the fire and rescue personnel just moments ago they were telling me it looks like that roof may have caved in. inside that obviously things that you'd find in a supermarket like charcoal and other things that could explode and burn. it was quite a cooker when we first got here. there
