peter bernard joins us from the jail. many wondering how did he get a weapon? >>reporter: that's the big question. in prison a knife is called a shank and this guy used one to theten the corrections officer. >> and he laid down flat, you know, flat out. and then he kept picking up his head and kicking his feet. >> reporter: she where pinellas deputies pinned the inmate on the ground. >> they caught the guy and he was down to the ground and three cops had their guns on him telling him not to noouf and he would intentionally pick up his head and kick his feet. >> reporter: i say escape began 2 hours earlier. he was on a prison work detail with four other inmates. he used a knife to take the officer hostage. handcuffed him, locked his fellow inmates in this building so how could this happen? how is it an inmate with an assault record is able to get a weapon and usa it on an unarmed guard. >> we're not sure at this point. >> reporter: we asked the doc what went wrong. in a statement they replied a review of the incident is underway to determine the cause and evalua

let's get to peter bernard in pinellas county. peter? >> reporter: this is the sad case of a guy apparently addicted to drugd the sheriff fired that deputy yesterday. he had been with the agency since october of 2012. here are pictures of what went on. 32-year-old steve smith had worked as a patrol deputy and a narcotics deputy. the sheriff tells me he had been assigned desk duty after his performance had been falling off. stealing pills and pawning his glock. he pawned it at a pawnshop in new port richey. this kind of addiction can affect anybody and his former deputy's life was spiraling downward. >> he is broken. and you know, he said that he just didn't have any money. needed to pay and, it was his way of being backed into a corner. he needed help. >> reporter: the sheriff says it was smith's girlfriend who actually tipped off investigators. she sent a picture of the pills which we now know possibly numbered in the 300, perhaps even 400 in total. he could face additional charges in pasco county because ha is where the supposed crime

>> prostitution and selling drugs. >> one of the things bernard did on occasion inside l.a. county jail was put on beauty pageants. he was like a peacock. he wanted to show off his feathers. >> do you like the miss america pageant? we do them in here, but we do them for the boys. and we have the girls, the boys, the schoolboys, the vogue and all kind of stuff like that, so it's a variety of things that you can run for. it's not just beauty. we cover with sheets and towels, stuff like that, make little dresses, you know. we destroy state property to make the outfits, in other words. >> do you wear makeup? >> yes, actually. look at my face. >> we explored another special housing unit at l.a. county as well, the mental health ward, where we encountered one of the most unforgettable scenes ever shown on "lockup." >> there was one gentleman in particular who i could barely see him because there was so much graffiti on his cell door and all over his walls. it looked like hieroglyphics. >> a lot of the writing on the door is human feces, and he also has combined a little mustard on

peter bernard is live in st. petersburg. this case took what, a year to crack? >> reporter: right, josh. it took that long for investigators to gather all the information they needed on this case. tonight two of the three people involved in the scheme are facing justice. life at a standstill. >> reporter: music teacher eileen etioli is constantly hounded by creditors all because police believe these three stole her identity. >> tried to open women's accounts like victoria secret and they got into bank accounts and put them in my name, but the irs was the worst. >> reporter: police tell me denise dallas headed up the scheme st information from her employer to pay for utilities and cable tv at the house she shares with her daughter jessica. >> we found where 18 different credit cards were used to pay the monthly credit card bill since november and we found out where the information was compromised from. >> reporter: they even used a stolen card to buy food for jessica's boy friend, an inmate at the pinellas county jail. also accused is shawntell jones. police beli
