bill karins is here. >> tornadoes, landfalling tropical system and a blizzard. the storm in the gulf, karen does not look too impressive. the center of the storm is located where it is spinning. thunderstorms are displaced to the east of the storm. winds are still at 65 miles per hour. it is still a big area of circulation. without thunderstorms near the center it is doubtful it will become hurricane before landfall. blizzard warnings there in the rapids city area. you will change to snow. it is snowing hard in the mountains of wyoming. we are talking about the possibility of up to two feet of snow. and then out ahead of that storm system later on today we will see a chance of strong thunderstorms, possibly tornadoes, that area of red is at greatest risk right across much of central and northern iowa where we focus for the best chance of tornadoes. strong storms from kansas city down to areas around oklahoma city. a lot of things on the map today to be aware of for your safety. that is your national forecast. here is a look at the weather outside your window. >>

. >>> now for a look at the weather here's bill karins, all right, bill, we need sunshine and the shutdown storm. >> one of those beautiful days in washington, d.c. that we've ever had on october 1st. it's going to be absolutely gorgeous. it's just this weather pattern just shaping up to be a very interesting october if we keep the temperatures like this. i mean, these high temperatures this afternoon, i mean if i showed think weather map you'd probably tell me it was maybe the beginning of september, you know, even late august. look at that, 80 degrees, as far north as new york city, minneapolis at 77 degrees. i mean it doesn't get much warmer than this for october. one thing of interest we are watching the tropics, there's a 50% chance that little circle over cuba or south of there does develop. if it does it will head to florida or the northern gulf states. none of our computer models and conditions do not look favorable for a big storm like a big powerful dangerous storm that could do a lot of destruction but could be a tropical storm so that's what we'll have to watch and could add mo

. >> and now for a look at the weather, i'm joined by bill karins. i bet she'll never ignore that again. >> when batman robin had the kerr splats? >> the quiet weather for three months. this is the more interesting forecast in a while. first to the tropics. we have a developing tropical storm. this during the day today should become karen. it's heading to the u.s. plus it's in the gulf of mexico where there's warm water. you can get big storms in october. thankfully, it doesn't appear to have a chance to become a hurricane or strong hurricane. there's a lot of dry air in the western gulf, and the upper level winds will shear it apart and tear the tops of the thunderstorms off. that's why we think it will be a tropical storm headed toward north florida or the panhandle or new orleans who mobile or in that vicinity. also, a big winter storm. a huge winter storm, warnings spread from montana to colorado. this is going to be a serious snow event tore the area, especially tonight to tomorrow. casper to rapid city could pick up over a foot of snow. here we

bill karins is here to talk about this. i'm always fascinated by these. that's a tornado over water. >> they're weaker, too. if they move over land, they're called tornadoes. that was with a cold front that went off the coast a couple days ago. then karen in the gulf merged with that. all that mess is still lingering on the eastern seaboard. it was ugly day yesterday in virginia, north carolina and now it has moved north. look at the radar filling in. baltimore, d.c. it's going to be a slow drive as you head off to work or school this morning. new york city, you'll be next by later on this afternoon. over the next 72 hours, the long-range european models the heaviest rains will focus the coastlines much new jersey, new york city, all the way through maryland. as much as 2 to 3 inches. a lot of high tide cycles with beach erosion. possibly by sunday we begin to get rid of this mess. three days in a row of this while the rest of the country, you look beautiful. i mean, it's still fantastic from the northern plains all the way down to the southeast. i mean,

let's get a closer look at the weather now with meteorologist bill karins. >> it came so unexpectedly that they were unable to keep them alive? >> just too many. >> one tv station the workers were trapped inside. on facebook they are asking for supplies on snow mobiles. a lot of it is melted. yesterday the big weather story was the storms that rolled through the northeast, horrible airport delays. we didn't have tornadoes. we had a lot of reports of wind damage, a lot of trees fell down and a lot of leaves came down. now what we are watching is the tail end of the storm existing off the southeast coast line. it has lost its push out to sea. it is mixing with what was tropical storm karen. this is going to linger along the southeast coast for a couple of days and slowly drift to the north up into the mid-atlantic. you can see all of the rain out there. coastal areas of north carolina and south carolina it is going to be kind of windy, raw. the waves are going to be up and you are going to get rain, maybe heavy rain. by the way, the middle of the country gorgeous. 76 and sunny today in
