the water is washed away, a wooden staircase at the boardwalk here and if the water seeps under the boardwalk's retaining wall it could cause a lot of damage. a spokesperson said that the water had never come this close to the park. the park spent a good part of the day yesterday using earth movers to build up sand on the beach trying to block that water. so far the river has only caused a few thousand dollars in damage but with more storms in the forecast, everyone here in santa cruz certainly is keeping their eyes on the forecast and on the river. now we're going to be moving around here a little bit more trying to get a view of that. the maintenance worker i spoke with said you actually can't see where the river has turned right and moved it's way up to the boardwalk and you can't see it now because the park isn't open and because it's private property you can't get to where the damage is. we'll get as close as we can and we'll try to see what we can and we'll bring that video to you. certainly everybody here keeping an eye on that weather hoping it doesn't cause any further damage here at t

but the boardwalk will be open this weekend, weather and water permitting. let's take a look at the river looking down over that seawall from the boardwalk itself. the water is well below the top of the seawall, but it's moving along at a pretty good clip and taking sand with it. there's concern the river could undermine the boardwalk's foundation and cause real damage. sand is being piled up for a protective best of your memory in front of the seawall --. you can see how easily it carves an ever-deeper channel here. this view suggs the river is no longer rising, but with more rain on the way, that could change. these folks and other locals say this is not the first time the san lorenzo has veered from its course. but most agree this is the most dramatic change they can remember. >>> major school cuts are homiciding. in california -- are looming. many of the jobs are here in the bay area. >> teaching isn't just a job. it's who i am . with each pink slip that i received, it's like my life is being taken from me. >> reporter: brisbane school teacher singsia de

it is rushing along the edge of the boardwalk. crews have piled up rocks and sand to try to keep the water out. it is reported the flooding is already doing thousands of dollars of damage >> quite a bit of damage around the bay area in the last 24 hours. high winds brought down several trees. pg&e said all the power has since been restored but it was quite a mess. three trees toppled onto a home in sonoma county yesterday. this is near piedmont rio near the russian river. over in oakland, a candy store remains closed after water came pouring through the ceiling. the owner hopes to reopen by easter >> i feel helpless, i see all the merchandise is getting wet >> the owner says heavy rain and a claude restraint combined to cause about $100,000 of damage. >> crews are talking about the opening of told in ways because of all the rain we have seen. carpool lanes were supposed to be open today for solo drivers covering a 4 mi. stretch by the interchange of to 37 and interstate 880. crews will help with overnight work needed on the lands.

christian joins us live from the boardwalk. >> yeah, we moved in the last hour. now before we were on the other side of the park. we now moved to an overlook here on the backside of the park. you can give you a better sense of what's going on. you can see, that is the river running along the backside of the park. you can see it running right there against the retaining wall on the backside of the beach boardwalk and that is what is causing the problems out here. usually that river runs directly out to the ocean but now, since we've had all the rain over the last couple of days, it actually pushed the river out of it's regular channel a little bit to the west and is running along the backside of the park. it has already washed away one wooden stairway. i spoke with a maintenance worker when he first arrived here and he told me you can see the staircase out in the baby daylight. if that water continues to run along the retaining wall it could undermine that wall and cause a lot of damage. now the boardwalk spokesperson said that the water has never come this close
