bob redell looking at fire affecting people in the area. mike inouye will tell you if street closures will affect your commute. we'll start with chase cain live at the scene. what's the latest there? >> reporter: as we showed you earlier, it's incredibly windy in san francisco, and the firefighters are now at about the 12-hour mark of putting water, pouring water on the building. there's two different ladders where they have hoses at the top spraying water into the building and off to the left, you can pan over there, a truck on the ground spraying water up at the building. late yesterday, take a look at this from when the fire was raging. part of the apartment building collapsed. san francisco firefighters wanted that part of the building to collapse because that made their job a little bit easier. the apartment building is under construction so the sprinkler system was not operational. but they would have loved that, because that would have helped the situation, maybe they would not be battling the fire 12 hours later. no idea what caused

bob redell is joining us with the breaking details. good morning. >> good morning. usp 3 aircraft have returned to australia and in spite of efforts using radar they found nothing. it was poor visibility. it was a four-hour flight. this is what they are looking for the whitish objects spotted by satellite floating on the surface of the indian ocean, one is from 75 to 80 feet in length, the other 16 feet, last night australian's prime minister announced this was quote new and credible evidence of possible debris from malaysia airlines flight 370 which disappeared 12 days ago on a flight from kuala lumpur to beijing. the location of this is remote, 1400 miles southwest off the coast of perth australia also in the area where some aviation experts think that 777 aircraft might have gone down. >> this is a lead, it is probably the best lead we have right now. but we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them to know whether it's really meaningful or not. >> part of the problem in finding this debris these satellite images are four days old. the reason it took so

bob redell just spoke to police. >> reporter: good morning. freemont police are blaming the mother for this crash, a 33-year-old woman from freemont who they believe was drinking at the time of this horrible head-on collision. can you see right behind me, though they're getting ready to clear the scene. we're just a little bit north of durham and auto mall. the car seat is there. the daughter was strapped in to the car seat according to police, but unfortunately the car seat itself was not attached to the car. it was a free-moving object with her attached and as a result she is in critical condition and she is still fighting for her life. police tell us that she has life threatening injuries. they thought that was the case with the mom initially but she has been upgraded. she's still hurt, she's critical but she is stable. she's no longer in that life threatening danger zone. again, as i mentioned, they do believe the mom had been drinking. this happened around 12:15 this morning. she was coming down osgood with the daughter in the back seat w

bob redell is live outside the gilroy walmart where the suv was stolen and bob, as a dog lover and i know so many are, this is one of those stories that makes you sad. >> reporter: it is very heartbreaking. good morning to you, peggy. those two men that we're about to show you, they are persons of interest according to police. not only in the theft of the suv from this parking lot here and walmart but also in the death of the dog. the dog did end up passing away. this is the surveillance camera image of the two men police are looking for. they appear to be in their 20s or 30s, maybe a little older, hard to tell. both have facial hair, one in the foreground has a goatee, the other a goatee or beard. investigators believe they are connected with the theft of this suv a week and a half ago from this walmart. in the back seat was a 15-year-old dog keiko who was a life long companion to michael mcvey. mike mcvey spent four days looking for the dog thinking that the thieves would have let her go. unfortunately no such luck on the fourth day he received the devastating news from police that

bob redell is live at the university. bob, you talked with someone who knew the victim. >> reporter: scott, she was a regular walker, would see her most mornings walking down this bike and pedestrian path that cuts through san jose state university. as a matter of fact, this man tells us he used to ride down this path but stopped recently for fear he'd hit a pedestrian. he feels that this construction barrier to the left has made the sidewalk too narrow and too dangerous for walkers and riders to co-exist. last week just before 6:00 in the morning ching sung ne, an 89-year-old was out with her friend when she was hit by a bicyclist in the opposite direction. the impact knocked her down. she hit her head so hard, she died on saturday. >> i saw her and her friend walking across the street, and yeah, it's kind of sad. i didn't say anything, maybe just a smile here and there but you know, because i didn't know them. but they were just -- you -- when you see somebody so often, you know, you don't -- and even if you don't say an

let's go over to bob redell at the scene of another house fire this time in san jose. bob, you have new video of flames as well. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, scott. a man and woman who live at this home on aetna way here in san jose, they are at a hospital right now being treated for what san jose fire tells us are serious burns. not clear if those are life threatening or survivable but serious enough that they had to be transported. look at the cell phone video we just brought into our newsroom from a next door neighbor. shows how intense this fire was when it started around 3:45. you could see the back right, excuse me left part of the house how involved it was. it was involved when the fire department arrived. it destroyed a shed or stuck tur in the back. fire department ended up calling for a second alarm. the fire is now out. back to the two people, a man and woman. there are bars in windows and doors of this home, it's possible that those might have slowed their escape. forcing them to exit through the garage which might have been the longer way out. we

bob redell is live in san jose near this burned home. i guess the question are the lights back on for the entire block? >> reporter: they are. good morning to you, peggy. the lights are back on, on lanier drive after this house caught fire 10:30 last night. and what the fire department tells us was a marijuana grow. firefighters pulled out around 70 plants from the garage where this operation was based. it started around 10:30, took a while to get under control. two hours, unusual amount of time in a situation like this but the reason it took so long is because of the electrical hazard inside. turns out the residents bypassed the electrical boss to draw electricity to power all of the lights needed to grow marijuana plants. >> we were unable to secure the electrical, disconnect it. with live electric lines it's a hazard to firefighters because there is a risk of electrocution. >> reporter: there were people at home at the time. they all made it out okay, they are not hurt and the fire department tells us they are cooperating with san jos

bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob.also happening today, the bay area case that got national attention will be the focus of a new law aimed at protecting victims of cyber bullying. senator jim bell will introduce audrey's law named after audrey pot who committed suicide after she was sexually assaulted by classmates she knew. pictures were captured on cell phone. three boys served 30 to 45 days in juvenile hall for the crime. bell says the proposed law is aimed at deterring bullying and cyber bullying and sexual assault that led up to the suicide. audrey's law would make it easier to charge underage suspects as adults which could include prison time. >> new this morning despite an increase in the unemployment rate more jobs were added last month compared to the previous two. the labor department says that employers added 175,000 jobs last month, up from 129,000 in january, so that means the unemployment rate now 6.7%, that is up from a 5-year low of 6.6%. >> you want to feel like it's 1999? a company with a dotcom in th

bob redell joins us live in gilroy. police are trying to track do you know the suspects. >> reporter: good morning. police are hoping you might recognize the images of these two men who they believe are connected to this heartbreaking crime that started here at this gilroy walmart. the image shows two men, both appear in their 20s, possibly 30s. the shorter has a goatee, the taller one a goatee or beard. they call them persons of interest in the theft of this suv we're showing you. this happened about a week and a half ago in this walmart parking lot. in the back seat was keiko, a 15-year-old dog whose owner and best friend michael mcvey loved dearly. mcvey walked out and realized his vehicle was stolen he and his friends began looking for his dog, thinking that the thieves had no interest in the dog, that they would set her free somewhere. that search went on for four days. until police called and told mcvey they had found his suv in a parking lot walmart in san jose, and in the back seat was keiko dead from thirst and

bob redell just arrived on the scene. bob, we heard of at least a couple people hurt. >> reporter: yes. seriously burned. good morning to you, peggy. a man and woman here at this home behind me, this fire started around quarter to 4, you can see this fire is now out thanks to sjfc. they had to call for backup making this a two-alarm fire. when they arrived both those people had been able to get out on their own, the fire department tells us one reason they might have been burned and not get out as fast as you can see there are bars on the house. they had to be cut down. that might have slowed their escape whether they were coming out through a window or the front door which has a gate in front. that part is unknown. fire department tells us that when they arrived it was fully involved, it appears the fire started in the rear of the house. there is an outside structure there that was fully involved. that structure collapsed, might have been a shed or something like that. it's not clear if that's where it started or where it

bob redell has more. >> reporter: we just heard from austin's police chief, and he calling last night's events intentional. the man is now facing two counts of capital murder. this is eyewitness video of moments just after the collision. one man says people went down like bowling pins. this happened around 12:30 this morning texas time. they were trying to pull over the suspect for driving drunk, but instead he sped away, going down the wrong way on a one way, and went down a street that was closed for the festival. he almost hit an officer, and he almost hit several people. a woman from austin was killed as well as a man from the netherlands. another 23 people were hurt, eight in the hospital, three in critical condition, two in serious. the suspect ended up crashing. running away, and the police chased him. despite what happened, the organizer is trying to keep the festival schedule as is. >> we cannot allow one individual with this selfish act, who cared about only one person, himself, to ruin a wonderful worldwide event. a celebration of life and music. i think if you were to cancel

bob redell joins us live in palo alto this morning. bob, police have left the neighborhood but the burglar still on the loose? >> reporter: police have suspended their active search for these two burglars, these two suspects. but they do have images of these individuals that could ultimately lead to their arrest. that was police last night ordering the suspects to come out of the home on ames avenue. but after several hours s.w.a.t. eventually made entry to discover the suspects were not inside. it turns out they had escaped before the first officer ever arrived. to give you background this started around 6:30, a mother was returning to the home from errands with her baby and another adult relative, she noticed that a back door had been forced open. while on the phone with 911 she heard a door slam in her home, she turned to a 21st century technology to confirm that yes, her house had been burglarized. >> she then used her smart phone to check her video surveillance system in her home, and was able to see what she thought were two indiv

bob redell following details overnight in the newsroom with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police released those photos a at news conference that wrapped up not long ago. here is the image of one of the men, a 19-year-old from iran. police identified him, his ticket was purchased in thailand. his final destination was supposed to be frank further, germany where his mother was waiting. she has spoke within police and police are convinced her son was not involved in the disappearance of flight 370. >> we believe that he is not likely to be a member of any terrorist group. and we believe that he is trying to migrate to germany. >> reporter: this is the image of the other man traveling on a stolen passport. also from iran. police have identified him. he is 29 years old. they also point out that neither of these iranian passports -- their iranian passports reported stolen or listed, why they didn't come up during border patrol checks. for an earlier statement there were five that checked in but did not board, police say that is not true.

bob redell is live in palo alto. police have left the neighborhood but the burglars still on the loose. >> reporter: they did actively look for them but did sus spent that search before midnight. there could eventually be an arrest because they do have video images of the two individuals. this was the scene last night. you can see s.w.a.t. surrounding this home on ames avenue. you can hear them in the background ordering the people to come out, not realizing that the people were, in fact, already gone. after several hours s.w.a.t. eventual hi made entry in the house to make that discovery. the suspect s had escaped a. mother was returning back home from errands, she had her baby and another adult relative. she noticed that the back door was forced open. on the phone with 911 she heard a door slam. she turned to technology to confirm that yes, her house had been burglarized. she looked on her smart phone and was able to access her in-home surveillance vem. there was video. it shows two strangers in a bedroom. then it

bob redell live with an advanced copy of that report. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. this is the official report to be presented to the los angeles board of airport commissioners at noon today. in it it argues that l.a.x. has serious shortcomings when it comes to its emergency response. last november a man with a high powered rifle shot and killed a tsa officer at a security checkpoint in terminal 3, then went through the check point and shot and injured two tsa officers and a school teacher before police shot him and placed him under arrest. you saw his photo there, 24 years old, has pled not guilty to chargeses. the report criticizes the police and fire response saying both agencies set up separate command posts which added to the chaos of that day, took 45 minutes to coordinate together. officers and firefighters radios were incompatible. there was almost no communication between police and fire and the airport emergency operation center and because of this confusion first responders didn't know where and how to respond. hence, the long delay for the emts to help t

bob redell is live at the menlo park station where a camera caught that very close call. frightening to watch, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. caltrain is drawing attention to this clip to show commuters how dangerous and stupid it is to cross when the gate's down. i want to give you a heads up. you see the train stopped on the right track, keep an eye on the left side on the empty track. and the fools who think it's a good idea to cross them. you'll notice the video clearly shows the barriers are down at the crosswalk and the sirens ringing. the commuters decide to go under or around to catch the other train for work. that last pedestrian comes within feet of getting clipped by that train. caltrain drawing attention to this to warn people how dangerous this is. the agency points out its train an hit a top speed of 79 miles an hour, that means it could cover the length after football field in less than three seconds. because the trains are so big it's hard to tell they are moving that fast until they are on top of you. it's unknown who those people were but if they
