kimberly bookman has the story. >>reporter: police are work on this investigation, they call it a smash and grab where someone someone runs no a store, takes what they can and takes off. there's an all-out search tonight for stolen handguns after someone broke inerly monday morning and made off with four of them. >> stole some firearms and ran out of here within two and a half, three minutes. >>reporter: the initial clue came when a security alarm was when police arrived they found the glass front door shattered. >> i think everybody worries when it comes to firearms, etc. usually these guns are stolen for one or two reasons, either to try to turn around and sell them for profit or they are going to be used in acts. >>reporter: it's a crime that sounds a whole lot like a robbery that happened two weeks ago in hooksett, new hampshire. detectives say they are looking into whether the two are linked. >> in the morning the amount of guns were the same, etc. it's a lot of similarities so we're looking at that. >>reporter

i'm sarah bookman. >> i'm joe torrez. we begin with the two officers shot in the line of duty. they were wounded. more than 30 shots were fired by six responding nypd officers. so many bullets flew, forensics will ultimately determine whether or not the officers were hit by friendly fire. >> the suspect was shot several times. he's being treated right now. he pointed a gun at the officers. they reported this revolver from the scene. we're going to begin with eyewitness news reporter aj ross. >> reporter: from the suspect's car to the police vehicles involved in this wild chase and shootout, everything is still here and being carefully documented. from this van damage point, we've counted more than 50 evidence markers and more than so there's still a lot to sort out here. >> i knew there were gunshots. it ended in an all out shootout early saturday. sending officers to nearby hospitals. investigators say it all began just before 330 when two housing officers approached 34- year-old jamal fumes. he was armed with this .357 magnum and pointed it at them before fleeing in his car.

eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman is live at the restaurant with more. sandra? >> reporter: yeah, shirleen. that suspect right now in custody and being questioned at the sixth precinct. he is 16 years old. and we learned this afternoon that the arrest came as a result of tips that came through crimestoppers. as you said, the incident happened on february 17th here at the silver spurs diner in the village. they came into the restaurant, asking for donations from customers. a worker asked them to leave. the panhandler came back and treat. that worker, bobby bar doe, needed 137 stitches to close that wound. in the days that follow, police released video and pictures of the suspect and several other teenagers that were said to be with him. again, he was taken into custody this morning. customers here at the restaurant, they are happy to hear about that arrest. >> i'm relieved. because he might have done it to someone else. i'm happy. i hope bobby gets justice. >> well, i'm glad they caught the individual. and i hope they throw the book at him. >> again, that 16-year
