in fact, i just talked to one of the members who -- brian fitzpatrick, one of the more moderate members of the conference. he's been having some of the discussions with some of the detractors, some of the mccarthy detractors, trying to understand what the opponents need to get to yes. trying to put together some offer, some proposal that they could then present to the rest of the conference, see if the rest of the conference agrees with the changes, which include give the rank-and-file members, the far-right members key assignments, to use nor leverage over the speakership. the question, though, is can the rest of the conference agree to it? that's why there's been active discussions al day long about whether they can delay the vote for another day. they want more time to have those discussions play out in order to get a deal. the real fear among the mccarthy allies is that he will lose votes on the fourth ballot. he could go from 20, 2021, maybe even be yond. if he does that undercuts any ability to showcase he's regaining momentum. that's a rely risk to trying to achieve 218 votes. th

brian fitzpatrick, i don't think a clean debt ceiling is in the order.one-party government and it requires negotiation. what is the significance of the moderates saying that january 22? >> yeah. listen. they can shift the weight around. they have power with such small margins. the issue is that this has the potential to become a political loser for republicans. this conversation about dead ceiling and then around government shutdowns. both sides end up bruised and democrats might have an opportunity here because often democrats are seen as weaker on the economy but the economic issues that democrats champion are popular with most americans, like expanding the social safety net and the child tax credit. if it shifts democrats might have a strong argument to make. >> there's a real question about whether the united states can avoid a recession this year or go into a recession this year. amy, when we talk about the debt and the deficit this is where i think republicans were silent for four years of trump racking up 25% of all of the u.s. debt since 1789. ad
