first alert meteorologist brittney shipp has a look at the rest of our area. >> we want to show you all the way to last night, into today, and show you how much rain fell. in some locations they saw more rain than others. philadelphia wasn't quite as bad as some of our locations in south jersey. you can see how strong those thunderstorms were if we switch you over to our estimated radar rainfall totals you'll notice where some of the reds are, that's where the bull's eye is for the heaviest amounts of precipitation. if i zoom in a little more to parts of south jersey just outside of mullica, 5.3 inches of rainfall that's a lot of rain to the north of vineland 4.4 inches closer to atlantic city, 4 inches of rainfall and parts of those areas, we have that flood warning that's going to stay in effect until 4:45. if you're a little closer to west chester, 2 1/2 inches for chester, 2.1, we'll take you out to lancaster county. just outside of pottstown, to the south of reading, 4.2 inches. chester county 3 1/2 inches of rain, that's a lot of rain that came down in a short amount of time causi

first alert meteorologist brittney shipp is tracking the heat wave. >> sweltering summer heat from coast to coast so it's not just here in philly and the northeast but also in the northwest. take a look at the philadelphia area, we are locked into a potential eight day heat wave. that will extend all the way into next week. the heat wave in the northwest could be one of the worst in history. you can see some of the current temperatures close to triple digits right now. parts of oregon might see their hottest july ever on record. temperatures today will push close to 110 degrees in northern california and another round of triple digits is expected all the way up to washington state. most of these areas are anywhere between 10 to 20 degrees above normal. so at least we are not the only ones sweating it out. the good news is the humidity has dropped and it will push the feels like temperature to a more comfortable level. >> thanks, brittney. you can use the nbc 10 news app to help keep cool this weekend. we have some tips on how to beat the heat. you can also get the first alert forecast se

meteorologist brittney shipp is here to explain why it could keep our hurricane season quiet this year. >> that's right. i'm here to break it down. el nino is a large area of above average water temperatures in the tropical pacific. it's hard to believe but this actually affects our weather. it affects the weather around the world and also helps produce strong thunderstorms in the pacific. those thunderstorms actually make it more difficult for hurricanes to form in the atlantic. it's because hurricanes don't like wind shear or when the upper level winds keep changing direction. that's why this strong el nino this year which could possibly become a super el nino could mean it's going to be a quiet hurricane season. it only takes one strong hurricane, however, to make it a bad season but overall right now we are tracking several factors that suggest we could be dealing with a quiet 2015 hurricane season. sheena? >> we have definitely seen that so far. especially since we are kind of in this dry period locally with that heat wave in the area. that's going to continue all the way through
