calfire is working this area very extensively. here is kirkwood, the slopes. the fire is a -- is advancing toward kirkwood because of the winds coming from the southwest and northeast. another area we are watching, silverlake. here is highway 88, here is the perimeter of the fire, it is getting close to silverlake. firefighters are working that area as well. this is mormon emigrant trail, here is 88, you see these doubts of red on your screen. these are spot fires that have crossed 88 on the seventh side of the highway. where there's winds we are watching coming out of the southwest and northeast. any one of the spot fires could continue to make new fires ahead of it. calfire has said some of the spot fires have jumped half a mile ahead of a -- head of the fire. throwing those embers very far away. red flag warning, unfortunately, this has been extended. it was supposed to end today. it has been extended until tomorrow night until 11:00 p.m. because the winds look to last another day, out of the west southwest, 20 to 35 miles per hour. perhaps even higher than

we just got an update from calfire a few minutes ago. they are telling us the majority of neighborhoods in south lake tahoe have evacuated. that they still have cruise on the current -- on the ground going door to door to ensure that is a case. the big concern now is the flames moving northeast atop echo to stomach. with winds moving as fast as they are, fire crews have a long road ahead. we are told it is expected to be the worst is crews battle those high winds and dry conditions. thank fully, the sierra at tahoe resort is still standing. miles of land surrounding it burned. homes across the street, gone. families in south lake are fearing that outcome. a couple hours ago, the traffic we just showed you along highway 50 was at a standstill as 22,000 people were trying to evacuate town. >> i'm not even really thinking about that. i'm thinking more like, loading up is going to be a waste of time. you have to be ready. >> where just trying to survive and take what we've got with us. we will prevail at some point. we are pretty stubborn. w

dan: obviously calfire and fire fighters gone on this very quickly. it spread remarkably fast and and a norma's amount of damage, destroying those d, 60 homes in a couple of hours at the most. spr qly the flames move? >> i'm always surprised how fast these fires move. this is an extremely dry year with the drought. it is a tinderbox here. conditions were just prime we hope for the best that these things don't happen, but this time of year, in this type of environment, it is always dangerous. dan: what is thehehehe next few hours tonight? what are you going to be doing? >> lines are probably going to be affected by these fires, so that might hamper some of our efforts to get the power turned on. we will see. folks up here are going through a lot with the power shutoffs and whenever we have a fire like this that impacts power lines, so we will be working on that. pg&e working with our fire crews. lost their homes have someplace to shelter, at least for the evening, start them on the road to recovery and get them situated. dan: long day come along couple

calfire making some progress, but the flames have jumped both sides of highway 50. residents are fleeing their homes, bracing for the worst. the caldor fire is inching closer to south lake tahoe, about 13 miles southwest of the mountain resort town. how would you rate the risk level in terms of having a mandatory evacuation order tonight? >> i don't believe that will occur tonight. there is potential if something were to occur, but i don't believe the risk is high at this point. stephanie: calfire has been working the front lines for nearly the past two weeks. this firefighter expects the next three days could be the worst. >> the wind has continued to align with the canyons, burning primarily in the northeast direction. stephanie: the northeast corridor includes the town of strawberry, where some of the 3200 firefighters are stationed to be redirected to fight the fire line just south of us. calfire issued new evacuation warnings along highway 50 tour the committee of strawberry, where most of the active fire is burning. we drove through the fire line. all that is

mark: it is hard, calfire officials have not been able to say, given an estimate of their ability tothe fire out. they have a whole army of crews stationed throughout the city and throughout the southern part of the area. it is very much touch and go, kind of a wait and see situation. they have been able to keep the fire out of the out sets. that has been a good sign. emily: thank you so much for that update. one of the biggest issues facing firefighters is knowing where the flames will head. the department of energy's pacific northwest national laboratory has developed a system with artificial intelligence and machine learning to protect wildfires early and predict the path they will take. i am joined by the product manager for radar fire, this new technologically advanced system. thank you so much for joining us. as i understand it, traditionally, firefighters are flying over blazes at night, drawing maps of where the flames are, then using that in the morning to determine where to fight the fire. how would your technology change that? chris you are correct that today there is an -
