i don't think cassidy hutchinson would, but a lot of these political figures.hen you see where the party is, where the majority overwhelmingly of the party is where trump, it's not about donald trump. it's about some deep failure and corruption and collapse of a party, unlike anything we've seen in american history. >> just to add on to what stewart says, and he has been eloquent about this for a long time. it's about not just party over country, but power over principle. and what you witnessed i think in that interview was a process of deradicalization that cassidy went under, where this group identity is enforced by trying to keep people in the group. and when they step outside, you punish them. you try to turn them into examples to reinforce group cohesion. the fact that trump is where he is in the republican party today, they're on the verge of renominating him, that's what is odangerous. when you see former trump acolytes, the people who know him best warning about the damage he could do our country. that's what so startling. >> the flag on that, it's not

let's button up the conversation about cassidy hutchinson.major security concerns after testifying before the january 6th committee. a period of time she had to live in tlaept, i believe she was saying. that's pretty striking, that she had to leave town because of this threat environment that a lot of former trump employees go through when they speak out against the former president. what went through your mind when you heard some of that? >> i'm really grateful for cassidy hutchins on to have com forward. this security concern is just another combam example of the kind of repercussions, the person with the moral courage to do the right thing had to deal with. that's something we really need to think about in our political system, as we ratchet up the rhetoric, as it's gotten coarser and we've made enemies out of our political opponents. this is getting hotter and hotter to a point where this is not sustainable in a representative democracy that operates securely. her comments really gave me pause and made me think about how all of us have a

these new claims are detailed in a memoir from cassidy hutchinson, former top aide to chief of staff s. she was a key witness before the january 6th committee. hutchinson writes, quote, i would sometimes find meadows leaning over the fire, feeding papers into it, watching to make sure they burned, and placing logs on top of the ashes. she says meadows was well aware of the standard procedure of using quote unquote, burn bags to dispose of papers. she writes, quote, even if he was burning copies, he was still towing a fine line of what should be preserved under the law. hutchinson describes other staff members complaining of the smoke, and in one instance, meadows own wife complained. she allegedly told hutchinson, quote, please don't light that fireplace anymore, mark doesn't need to burn anything else. all of his suits smell like a bonfire, and i can't keep up with the dry cleaning, at which mark meadows, rolled his eyes. hutchinson testified that she witnessed meadows burning documents once or twice a week, just over a dozen times. on one of those occasions, meadows burned papers af

you and cassidy hutchinson, you worked together in the trump white house.n to actually hearing her testimony put -- hearing that her testimony she felt put her life in danger? >> it's heartbreaking. but i can tell you it's true. cassidy and i are also close friends. and at the time i saw the vitriol that she was getting online. i was made aware of both the congressional committee's concern for her safety but also her own attorneys and family. listen, over 10 million people watched that hearing. i think she moved many hearts and minds. but you also know that there are folks on the far right who were threatened by what she was doing. and i think she was in danger and it was the right call to leave. >> yeah. certainly. ashley, what do you think? >> i mean, my heart goes out to her, of course. but what i appreciate is she showed a level of courage that we're not seeing even from republican members. she's -- you know, like nikki haley most recently stood up to the president and really spoke truth to power and really defended american democracy. so i just admire

this is the first time we are hearing at length from cassidy hutchinson. should note she speaks to jake tapper tomorrow. what's your take away there? >> reporter: john, she's being quite reflective on this decision that she made first when she had gone into the committee she had lawyers paid for by donald trump and she said she didn't -- she didn't recall much at all about what she witnessed at the end of the trump administration and then in her own mind she believes that she did recall. she remembered episodes so she got a new lawyer and testified and now she's reflecting not only on what that consequence was for her, she is saying in this new interview with cbs that she was fearing for her safety after she did the interview -- or did the public testimony with the house committee, but also she's being a little bit more forthcoming about why she changed her testimony and why she can be trusted. that what she said was true to the best of her recollection. here is a little bit more from that cbs this morning interview yesterday. >> i felt torn a lot of the t

remind our viewers, first of all, about how cassidy hutchinson.the rest of trump's circle in her credibility. >> these were explosive allegations against the form erp mayor of new york who is also a codefendant in full ton county. the person to provide explosive testimony for the january 6th committee about that whether a secret service agent told her that the president lunged at the driver of the so called beast, the car the president of the united states is riding in in an attempt to get him to take him, as the president, to the capitol on january 6th amid an active insurrection. she's also the person who said that president trump at the time did not seem to care that people had weapons as they were going in front of where he was giving his rally and his speech on route, presumably, to the capitol, saying they're not here for me. she also talked about what mark meadows was or frankly was not doing at the time in terms of being responsive to calls for him to tell the president to stand down or tell those who were at the capitol to stand down. so
