it's time for the weekly discussion with chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press." thank you for joining us this morning. i want to start with the weather, not just small talk but this past week record breaking heat across the globe, high temperatures in england and china, heat waves in the u.s. you have former vice president al gore on today. this is one of his passions following climate change and warning about it. what is his message? >> that the public has to start voting on this issue more and demanding that the people they send to office focus on the issue. he admitted the acknowledgement is there. the concern about climate is growing. the number of climate deniers are shrinking but what we are acting is political will. plenty in this country may agree climate is an issue but we have high gas prices. europe claims they care more about the climate than the united states. they are panicked about the high cost of energy. china and india are fossil fuel vacuum cleaners. there isn't a global leader on this any more and the thought was it would be the united states

it's time now for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, moderator of meet the press. hi chuck, thanks for joining us this morning. i want to start with the january 6th committee. we saw former trump white house counsel appear -- well, we didn't see it, but we heard he appeared before the committee on friday. liz cheney has called him a critical witness. what makes this onso integral? >> i think it will depend on what -- how much he is going to come of what we heard from cassidy hutchinson, the mark meadows aid who had some explosive testimony. she even quoted pat cippilone directly. now, she won't go as far as to say cippilone confirmed those specific quotes that were so striking from ms. hutchins and, but she did say that essentially the narrative was the same. i think a lot of times, let's wait to see what we hear from mr. cippilone. he was reluctant to do this, and apparently the only areas where he would refuse and cite executive privilege were anytime when he was asked what he said to the president directly. and so that was the only place where we didn't hear. so

>> let me to go the moderator of "meet the press," chuck todd, you've been listening in. what are your thoughts? >> with, i'm struck by a couple things. how thoroughly the committee has disqualified donald trump. if this were a case that were being made to the u.s. senate, and you're making, remember, impeachment is a political case. and i think they've made an strootly strong political case that the former president perhaps, they're painting a picture that he was a bit delusional. i would sort of say, this is the donald trump that i have researched my whole adult life. he is always searched for lawyers who will tell him what he wants to hear. it all began with roy cohen back in the day. then he found himself michael cohen. rudy giuliani. sydney powell. he's always searched for a lawyer who will tell him what he wants to hear and then that's what he attaches himself to. everything that has been said, i keep coming back to why are we here? we're here because the republican party, mostly in the united states senate, didn't have the guts to deal with the consequences of disq

if ali vitali tells me that chuck todd hit him, i want to know what matt says about that evidence. >>nder oath. >> the committee knows something that the rest of us don't know before i went out at the second h hearsay, i want to know what the firsthand witness had to say >> it is a third hand account. >> it depends on how you interpret it >> secret service agents don't talk about what they see or hear from their protectives >> well, lawmakers were briefed late on what the cassidy hutchinson's testimony were going to be. the rank and file committee were briefed late on this there was discussions on whether or not this key detail should have been included now, they're at a point that this is out there. we know people like liz cheney really wanted to push the envelope of what the committee includes this is one of those headline-grabbing details. it is fair to wonder whether or testimony would have been as shocking as it was i would argue it would have been even if you didn't have the few details of what happened in the limo the committee don't want you to miss the furthest from the tree.

it is time right now for a weekly discussion with chuck todd and moderator of meet the press. in morning. you so much for joining us. senate democrats have announced a surprise deal that will raise taxes of corporations and provide new funding of climate change for the affordable care act. my question is these are big promises, big things, but is it enough to impact the upcoming midterms and more important is this actually help everyday people before then? >> reporter: the question of timing i think is one that is hard to answer. it is unlikely this will impact our pocketbook immediately. some have argued that perhaps the lowering of prescription drug prices now that medicare will be able to go she ate that the might be something we see first of all of the impact. about much of the energy investments both on the climate front but also there is a huge investment in fossil fuel infrastructure as well. there was a promise sort of speeding up some permits so this is one of the cases which if you are a purist when it comes to the climate, you're not going to like the fossil fuel in

janet yellen was on with chuck todd trying to pre-butt the numbers that might come out tomorrow, becausecould be two consecutive quarters down in growth. that has in the past indicated a recession. she's saying it's not a recession because of the great job numbers and wage earnings and others. these are mixed data. it's not fair to even call it a recession at this point. accurate? >> she was 100% right. i find the whole semantic debate over a recession missing the point. it's not two negative quarters. it's when the national bureau of economic research says it's a recession. they do that based on a wide variety of data. right now, some of the key inputs into that determination, most important one being jobs, are going up, not going down. but just because we're not calling it a recession doesn't mean it's great. if we get a negative gdp tomorrow, that's going to indicate a lot of weakness in the economy. that's going to be consistent with what families have been feeling as their pay has not kept up with inflation. there's a lot to be worried about in the second half of this year from a gl

let's listen to what congresswoman zoe lofgren told chuck todd on "meet the press." >> if witnesses arent to just sit by and allow that to happen. we're going to raise a stink about it. we're going to refer information publicly to the department of justice if witnesses are intimidated because it's a crime to do that. >> renado, how difficult is it to prove witness intimidation? >> it can be difficult to prove, particularly when, as in the case that we heard in the last hearing, the person who is trying to intimidate the witness is deliberately setting it up to make it hard to prosecute, right. there i think it was mark meadows had a oral conversation with the lower level aide who sent a text to cassidy hutchinson that he deliberately worded in a vague way to try to influence her testimony. could she make a case out of it? yes, potentially. what i think the committee was actually doing is putting a marker down and basically telling anyone who is trying to intimidate their witnesses, we will call you out. we will make this public. we're putting a shot across the bow. if you do this again
