give us a sense, please, if you would, how extensive the damage is in collier county and naples. we heard the name naples a lot yesterday when we were talking about places inundated by the storm. >> sure. thank you so much for having me. well, we have just begun our damage assessment today after we're wrapping up any search and recovery that was ongoing. we did take a substantial amount of storm surge along the coast and the power of water is quite devastating. so as the days go on, we're going to have a better idea what that damage looks like. there is significant damage along the coast, both to some of our infrastructure as well as some bottom floors of structures. >> we have heard that we're going to, as time goes on, get a sense of how deadly this hurricane turned out to be. do you have an assessment of injuries or the unfortunate deaths that took place there or is it still too early to know? >> it's really too early to know. we have had some reports of deaths, but the facts are unclear and they're still being validated by our medical examiner. it appears we have been fortuna

collier county, i've got marko island. the isles of capri. and a big chunk of naples. these are pieces of paradise that people come to. this is the trade-off for these terrific once in a lifetime storms that really humble all of us, and even with a $20 million home, you can't stop the water, you know, with it. so we have damages, from mobile homes to some of the most, you know, expensive homes in our community on the beach in naples. >> i which say, you talked about hearing the stories of first responders making some of these dramatic rescues, as you were saying, we were watching one of those rescues happening from naples earlier, people, somebody in a car, the fire crews getting folks out. >> yes,i did see that video. and that is the exception, not the rule. but every one of those rescues is amazing. the other thing i will commend our collier county first responder is because i think we did such a great job on evacuations, and been able to help our neighbors in lee county quite a bit, so we've been sharing a lot of resources, up and down the coast, you know, you go a

we have eight unconfirmed fatalities in collier county. and we are still processing through the situation with the hasty search that i mentioned before in lee county. now, let me talk about confirmation and unconfirmed. people die in disasters that have nothing to do with the disaster, right, so the medical examiner is the one that makes that determination, they are the lead agency at the local level to determine when they investigate, that this is either disaster related or not disaster related. if it's determined to be disaster related and you've heard the governor and i talk about this for three or four days, direct death, storm surge, rising water, or indirect the stuff that led to it after the fact. with that being said 12 unconfirmed fatalities in charlotte county. we have eight unconfirmed fatalities in collier, one confirmed fatality in polk county. so that brings us up to 21 total. we do have an identified situation that was done during the hasty search of some fatalities. we do not know exactly how many were in the house and let

collier county is further down here in a naples area. when the storm arrived on wednesday between 1:00 and 2:00 if i'm right about that with the eyewall east coast time. this is the eyewall first made landfall. why is that important? these islands are low lying. we talked earlier in the week about sanibel island having three feet elevation off the shore. if you have a storm coming from due north/northeast and it has gathered all this strength and it is a category 4 and you don't have much to stop it, what happens here, dana, you see the waterways that run up here? they have different tributaries and rivers, etc. this is the sound. you think about this water coming up here up in the sound into charlotte harbor. there is a river to the south -- to the north of fort myers, the river here. they were talking about the tides changing every six hours that comes in and out and get an assessment of the tides. it's what they were talking about with the gulf of mexico being pushed onshore. i would just circle this area here because this is primaril

collier county, they've said they had to do at least 30 rescues was the last figure we got from them so the rescues are continuing. if you go back to your house, if you try to go to someplace like this and get hurt by some kind of a loose power line or something, they are not going to necessarily be able to respond to you so those are the kinds of things that people are warning about, poppy, and we got a films of this last night and went to a burned out house just north of st. petersburg. this thing had just had a calamitous fire because it was caused by a power line that snapped off a transformer there and the house was completely burned out. we talked to the owner. he said he didn't feel like he could come back yet because it was so dangerous. again, people just now as we have our first hours of daylight the day after waking up to this assessing it coming to places like this, it's just -- it's emotionally devastating for people as well. i mean just imagine if you owned this store, this is your whole life, right? you come here and you can't function. this is just repeated over and o

i want to bring in dan rodriguez, dan is a deputy county manager of collier county and he joins me via phone. dan, thank you so much. i'm happy that you're here. sorry about what's happening. but we're grateful that you're here to give our viewers some information and tell us about what's going on in naples right now. so, tell us about the damage we're seeing there. >> sure, don, thank you for the opportunity. it's tremendous destruction here. the coastline all the way down from the everglades coming up to everglades city. through goodland, through marco island, and the city of naples. central naples, of course, and moving up to north naples. and then the southern part there of bonita springs, just complete devastation. when you look at our coastline, as you quoted earlier, it does look like a war zone. that eight foot surge took out every first and a half floor of every building, home, along the beach all the way down through everglades city. so, construction debris laying everywhere, our dunes, the main roads, all just wiped clean. boardwalks, from our beach access points, and the ma

you also have charlotte county had damage, north naples, collier county.e working on is having staged all of the power and everything is the restoration of services. right now statewide 85% of customers have power and main outages are, of course, lee, charlotte counties have the most as well as hardy. but then you have about half out of collier and you have half out at sarasota and many other parts of the state until you get to seminal, 30% outcome a 40% outcome a dilution of 40% out, flagler 40 to 50% out in much better as you get to st. john's and jacksonville and nassau county. so there was over 42,000 folks staged. they win and immediately to try to minimize those disruptions and adding more customers online every hour. i think it is what would you say, hundred thousand every hour or two? so we feel good about most of that. i would say that the biggest challenge with power restoration will be in those areas for the brunt of the category 4 plus almost category 5 impact where it may have uprooted the existing infrastructure. now, that will be fixed but n

you look at collier county, i mean downtown naples is flooded. that's probably going to subside as the time goes on. they're prepared for a lot of different eventualities. we're thankful for the states that have sent us resource and we're very, very appreciative of them stepping up and helping florida. as this storm passes your community, understanding it's still a very hazardous situation. you're going to have downed powerlines. you're going to have a possibility of harm's way because of standing water, misuse of generators. i asked the department of emergency management, kevin, to produce for me the rundown of the fatalities through direct impacts of storms versus the aftermath, and in hurricane irma there were seven fatalities directly because of the storm, and there were 77 that were as a result of poststorm. a lot of that is standing water, downed powerlines, misuse of generators. so please just take precaution. obviously a ferocious storm coming in. very hazardous. very ominous. we know the life-threatening nature of that. but once the stor
