charlie crist.reporter: while both candidates are out shaking hands at local restaurants and forums. the big-money campaign is being waged on television. the election is expected to be one of the most expensive and nastiest races in the country. already more than $40 million has been spent by the candidates and outside interest groups and that number is expected to climb to $150 million. so far, the scott side is outspending crist three-to-one. even though polls show a tight race, scott has seen his numbers improve since he began the ad campaign. the pro-scott ads beat up on crist for plunging the state into an economic crisis during his tenure as governor. >> the numbers tell the story. florida's unemployment rate tripled. 800,000 jobs gone. property values down. which governor took florida to the bottom? charlie crist. what's worse, he didn't stay to fix the mess, he ran away. >> reporter: for his part, crist tries to remind voters of the scandal that surrounded scott's tenure as head of the hospi

perry, you spoke to governor crist last night.ant to get a sense of how he explains that 1998 comment and really what role they expect clinton will play in that race. >> you know, peter, he totally brushed it aside. he spent five minutes with me raving about how great bill clinton was as president, and after being president, because this is how crist is. politicians often change their views on issues, but charlie crist has changed his view on pretty much every issue we can think of. he used to be opposed to gay marriage, now he's for it. he used to be opposed to obamacare and now he's for it. he went from being a conservative to someone who's a pretty liberal democrat. charlie crist, i asked him yesterday, would you want to campaign with obama and he said yes, absolutely. there are very few democrats saying that right now and this tells you how liberal he's become in this new charlie crist. >> he has a little ground to gain right now. here's a look at where the "tampa bay times" says things stand. governor rick scott with 41% supp
