d.c. is now under the microscope. yesterday afternoon in a routine inspection the engineers found problems on the memorial bridge. suzanne kennedy is on the bridge tonight where the federal inspectors were back at it today. suzanne: i want to show you where they were mid-afternoon today on the drawbridge span of the bridge. you can see to the left here that one lane of westbound portion of the bridge remains closed. it was just 24 hours ago they were out here on the bridge. they found a problem right below where i'm standing right now. look at the underside of the memorial bridge. it shows every bit of the structure 83 years. this is part of the bridge they are most concerned about. the drawbridge portion. today we saw engineers go inside to inspect it. engineers from the federal highway administration were on top of the span. they were measuring and assessing the condition of the bridge. american society of civil engineers says the condition of the memorial bridge comes at no surprise. on

d.c. firefighter has died in the line of duty. we just learned his name lieutenant kevin mccray was on the scene of this apartment fire in northwest washington. our coverage on news 4 midday begins there with news 4's chris gordon. chris? >> reporter: this is chris gordon at the scene. this is 1330 seventh street northwest, a high-rise apartment fire. we want to show you that fire truck four still has a ladder extended to the ninth floor. that's the apartment where this fire occurred. we want to show you video shot at the height of this smokey blaze. it happened about 8:00 this morning. it's a two-alarm fire. additional fire ambulance and medics all this equipment was brought to the scene. we were told a firefighter was transported priority one, that means critical condition can life-threatened injuries. we later found out he died. also we were told about other serious injuries. >> the second firefighter was transported serious but non-life threatening injuries and another reported serious

d.c. has derailed. up to 60 people are injured. alison: it was a northeast regional train that left from washington, d.c., just a few hours ago on its way to new york city. richard reeve is live at union station with the latest. richard? richard: this was northeast regional number 188 that left union station at about 7:10 p.m. due to go to new york city. this is regarded as a mass castle the incident. that means the fire department police emergency services have all hands on deck at the location. what we have been seeing, what we have been talking about earlier reports said that the train shook as it went around a turn. another report said the trainers seem to shift onto its right side. we know that about 200 people were on the train, 8 to 10 cars derailed, at least two on their side. we have heard reports of 50, 60 people injured, lacerations, broken bones, things like that. we know that an ntsb team is on their way, search teams, as you may be showing on the video looking with flashlight

d.c. council will vote on changes to how much you pay for parking and you guessed it rates are going up. however, there's a battle over what kind of parking will cost more. news4's kristin wright has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the bottom line is that we're all going to pay more to park in the district but the question today is in what way? there are two proposals you need to know about. d.c. council chairman phil mendelson, his plan extends parking meter hours to midnight in areas like georgetown where we are this morning. adams morgan and the downtown business district, for example. mendelson proposes increasing parking ticket fines by $5. now the second option on the table is mayor bowser's plan to raise the tax on parking lots and garages in the district. that means we'd pay more to park in those areas. now, this is all about the district's budget and district council is set to vote on that today. eun and aaron, back to you. >> kristin wright in georgetown. than

d.c. mansion in northwest last thursday. this was the last time a potential suspect was seen captured in a security camera video. they believed he ditched the car here, set it on fire because he was familiar with this area. so far days now investigators returned to new carrollton in an effort to track him down. today they were showing pictures of a safety vest to people in the parking lot. three adults and one child murdered in this house. a man, his wife, their 10-year-old boy, and the family's housekeeper. a fire then set in an apparent effort to destroy evidence and cover up the murders. sources tell news4 that the three adults were beaten and stabbed to death in what was described as a bloody scene. the boy's body badly burned, so much so it's unclear if he suffered any other injuries. >> one of the horrible thin that's we have to deal with. any time there's a child involved, it's something that shakes all of us, just like it does the community. we're just like everybody else. >> repor

the d.c. police chief cathy lanier and she should be here within a minute or two we are told. what we understand is that d.c. fire responded to the home very close to the national cathedral, a area of multi million dollar homes with a fire and smoke and flames and however, once they got inside they realized that something was wrong, something did not appear to be right, and they called d.c. police and in short order they responded. and secret service responded here as well as crime scene investigators. they very quickly yellow taped off several blocks around this large home allowing no one in no one out, and began an extensive crime scene investigation. now, again, what you said, that we hear that three people are deceased. another person who is said to be in extremely, extremely condition, and right now the neighbors in the area say they don't know much other than there was a fire and that is why the crime scene investigators are here trying to determine what happened. we have someone from th
