denise nakano reports. ♪ >> you have no reason not to come home.ase come home and show yourself. >> reporter: few eyes stayed dry when jacob marberger's father spoke publicly for the first time since his son disappeared. >> jacob, wherever you are, whatever indiscretions you have done, they are all recoverable. >> reporter: about 75 people came to old york road temple on short notice to join dr. marberger's side and plead for jacob to reach out to his family. >> that he is safe and that he is secure. >> that we're going to support him and that it's all okay. >> reporter: jacob's disappearance prompted washington college to close its campus, reportedly despondent, his parents noticed that jacob came to the family home and may have left with a rifle. a short time later, his cell phone was pinged and was seen on surveillance buying a small box of bullets from walmart. investigators say there's been no activity on his cell phone since 7:30 monday morning. but as his father explains, jacob never threatened anyone and made a mistake of waving an antique

i'm denise nakano. five firefighters suffered minor injuries, fortunately no one else hurt. randy gyllenhaal joins us from 55th street and baltimore avenue. randy, any word on what caused that crash? >> reporter: denise, that is still under investigation, but officials say this ladder truck number 13 was on its way to reports of a structure fire when it crashed here in this busy west philly neighborhood. and you can see some of the damage left behind. this is a building that got its front side taken out. the cars and debris have since been removed and this entire thing was caught on video. in the minutes before the crash surveillance video captures people walking baltimore avenue, workers are out on the sidewalk. then out of nowhere the ladder truck slides down the street and crashes into parked cars. >> boom, like a bomb. >> reporter: we'll slow that video down. truck with five firefighters inside fish tails down the street almost flipping on its side. >> and they lost control, i guess, and they took everybody. i don't know. they took out the cars. >> reporter: there were pa

denise nakano is here with details. >> sources confirm to nbc 10 a grand jury is under way. and that grand jury subpoenaed brendan's aunt, sarah jessica. a source close to the investigation confirms she appeared before the grand jury monday. philadelphia defense attorney bill brennan represents the boy's aunt. tonight he addressed new information nbc 10 obtained from a source close to the investigation and akou grand ju subpoenaed his 20-year-old client something he would neither confirm nor deny. >> grand jury proceedings are secret and it's been my practice if there was a grand jury investigation, going on, just not to comment. >> reporter: it's been five weeks since he disaperfected from his home and was found in woods near the cooper river park. brennan acknowledges a video sarah jessica made a year ago forea college assignment. >> i mean, it certainly is an uncanny coincidence. >> reporter: in it, she featured 3-year-old brendan as a child who vanished and later found dead. >> it's a red herring. i would just encourage people not to focus too much on it because i think

deni denise nakano reports. >> reporter: a man was yelling for help. police are looking for two men, almost getting one of them before he got away. >> booms, cops just swarmed up. he bolted and the whole place turned chaos. >> reporter: that chaos turned to fear in the 24 hours since two men bound, beat and robbed their 42-year-old neighbor inside his franklin township home last night. >> i have, you know, a little sister, my grandmother at home. it's disturbing. >> i didn't sleep at all. i still haven't been to sleep. >> reporter: police say a neighbor heard cries for help at this apartment complex and she then called 911. >> mayhem. the helicopter hovering. >> reporter: a half dozen state and local law enforcement agencies arrived to find the victim bound by his hands and heat and beaten in his hand and face by a handgun. >> multiple blows to the head, almost looked like holes in his head. >> reporter: for a moment it appeared one of the men would surrenderer until he changed his mind. >> i stopped, you know, i said -- then he hopped the fence anyw a

we begin with denise nakano. >> he is here to be arraigned. a group of officers standing behind me are waiting for his arrival. meantime, state police have questioned a 19-year-old let him go. late tonight they questioned a 17-year-old and let him go after being interviewed. a high-speed chase, shoot out and fiery crash on the vine street expressway ended with pa state trooper patrick casey on the mend with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. the 17-year-old alleged gunman is expected to be charged as an adult with attempted murder. the teen suspect's father spoke out. >> he's hurt. he's hurt. >> reporter: as his son left p.a. state police barracks to be checked output. >> i have to be there for my son. >> reporter: it all started around 9:00 this morning when police pulled over a car for expired registration. as three people got out of the car, the suspected gunman got behind the wheel and sped off. trooper casey pulled up alongside him at broad and when the teen left from the car and opened fire on trooper casey, he fired back. you can see dama

denise nakano is live tracking the developments in the digital operations center. denise? >> jacqueline, the decision comes after black football players at the university with their coach's support threatened not to practice or play again until graduate student jonathan butler ended a hunger strike. wolf announced his resignation as students on campus gathered for a protest. anger and frustration had built after a number of racist incidents on campus, which included a swastika drawn on a dorm wall. this is the first step in a long journey for this campus. >> the university of missouri is showing itself to be a leader in making things happen and listening to their students. >> reporter: graduate student jonathan butler in the midst of an eight-day hunger strike responded to the resignation that he's ended the hunger strike. no immediate word if the football players will agree to take the field, but if the team does not show up for saturday's game, the university could face a $1 million cancellation fee. live in the digital operations center, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. >>>

denise nakano joining us live with more on the arrest and the condition of the med student right now. denise? >> well, jim, 21-year-old is behind bars tonight booked on several charges, including second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder. kane is accused of attempting to kidnap a woman in an suv early friday morning. a medical student tried to help that woman and surveillance video you see there shows gold getting shot in the stomach. police say cane attempted to shoot him two more times but his gun jammed. >> told you that we would find him and we did. very, very smart and very aggressive police work over the entirety of the weekend led to quickly identifying, first of all, who he was. >> reporter: cane was arrested this morning and gave police a full confession about the incident. now, officials also discussed a shooting at a new orleans park last night. in all, 16 people were shot, ten were taken to the hospital in ambulances. authorities vow to bring those shooters to justice just like they did with cane. gold is still in the hospital. doctors have him listed in g

i'm denise nakano. police are trying to figure out why the man driving the van crashed into the four victims in west philadelphia just before 6:00 tonight. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live on the scene. randy, this happened just as a birthday party was wrapping up? >> reporter: yes, denise, all four of these victims remain hospitalized, two of them critically. they were just leaving their grandmother's 75th birthday party happening here inside the banquet hall. as they were leaving to cross the street, police say a large van approached and then hit them. the flashing police lights interrupt the birthday party happening inside this banquet hall. four party guests, including two young children, were leaving the event when police say they were struck by a van on park side avenue. >> they were all laying on the ground. two adults, female adults, and two children. >> reporter: mary faust saw the aftermath. she said the driver stayed put. >> it was an elderly guy. he stopped. the van was right there. and he

. >> nbc 10's denise nakano is joining us live from hatfield with more on this disturbing arrest. denise? >> reporter: jim and jacqueline, the victim's 11-year-old brother called police, called 911, and when police arrived to the apartment complex, he had told them he did something to his sister, his little sister out here, about 4:00 yesterday morning here in hatfield. they found the children's step father holding down this man, oscar rivera herrera. now police say herrera got into the apartment through a living room window and sexually assaulted the 6 year old who was sleeping in her bedroom. the family did not know herrera and he has no history with police. >> individual where at least as far as what we know at this point, no signs, no reason for him to do this that we know of. i think it just really highlights the dangers out there. >> reporter: herrera admitted to breaking into the same apartment a few months ago when no one was home. the little girl was checked out at children's hospital. herrera has been charged with rape of a child, he's being held on $1 million bail. repor
