this was derrick ward in the newsroom with more on why police will be looking through everybody's cell phones to find that third suspect. derrick? >>> there are new troubling developments. this is a case of kidnapping and assault. the victim, who is not being publicly identify, tells police she was kidnapped, gagged, cut with a knife and taken to an apartment where she was raped several times over the course of several hours. she says she recognized two of her attackers from high school. a third held her down and also recorded the attacks. police arrested 19-year-old gutierrez and 17-year-old chico hernandez. the two were arrested earlier this month. investigators say this case is far from closed. that third person involved in the attack is still out there. >> why are police focusing on the suspects' social media accounts? >> they believe there was some planning done before this attack. they think the suspects were communicating via social media. that could add conspiracy charges to this already troubling set of events. >> derrick ward in the newsroom for us. thank you. >>> 4:35 is our

derrick ward now with the reason for the mass eviction notice. derrick? >> reporter: apparently, it has something to do with the sprinklers and the trash chutes. this building went up in july of 2016, almost completely full. but yesterday notices were posted from the virginia department of compliance that says that the sprinkler system and the trash chutes aren't working properly in rendering this uninhabitable. we spoke to a couple of residents. one said he hasn't heard about this. another says he was told the we spoke to people around here. there have been issues with the building since it went up. most recently when there was high winds in the area. a big piece of glass actually blew off that building and landed on a rooftop and damaged some cars. but from what we understand and can see, there was no sense of panic or exodus. we're waiting to get more information about this. but apparently, that's not the kind of thing you want to see in an apartment buildings, especially one you just moved into. it's near metro and transportation. notices wept up sayi

derrick ward is live there now with the reason behind this massmas mass eviction notice. good morning, derrick. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. this building went up in july of 2016. shortly thereafter, it was about 95% full. it's a great place to live. you can see metro from here, near route 7 and i-66. suppose you get a notice that says you can't stay. that's what happened to people here. this is at boyd point way. they started getting notices that they had to be apparently the trash chutes are not functioning and the sprinkler system does not work. the virginia department of compliance says that renders these apartments uninhabitable. unfit for human occupancy. they have until 1:00 p.m. to get out under the threat of possible prosecution. we spoke late yesterday with a resident who said that she hadn't seen anybody talking about moving or looking like they were getting out. she has no place to go. she doesn't know what she's going to do. daylight will rise on some uncertainty for the folks who live in these apartments in tysons corner much live in tysons, derrick ward

three months ago, this 13-year-old girl died after she was struck in news 4's derrick ward is live at the vre station in burke, virginia. derrick? >> reporter: well, this is all about a public safety campaign. about trains and the danger of being in close proximity to them. as you say, it was three months ago to the day that that young woman was killed crossing a railroad bridge. the statistics are alarming. indeed, someone or something is hit by a train once every three hours in the united states and last year 980 people were either killed or injured by trains. so vre has teamed up with local public safety officials to start this public awareness campaign about the danger of being around trains. you know, we think of trains as big, loud. they are indeed awe-inspiring, but they're not like they used to be. they're not that easy to detect. technology has seen to that. let's hear from a vre official about that. >> continuous welding. not the clickety hear from the early days and the trains are very fast and powerful. that's a lot of mass that's moving. they can't stop. >> reporter: so w

news 4's derrick ward is in college park. derrick, this happened close to the university of maryland. were students on campus notified about this? >> reporter: indeed they were. there is a campus notification system. although this did not happen on campus, it was close enough that they got an alert. you're looking at route 1 here. the main campus is just on the other side. we're walking along guilford road where this actually happened. this neighborhood has a pretty good mix of students and nonstudents. this thing happened here in the 4500 block of guilford road at about 3:30 saturday morning. now, the word went out, of course, on the campus alert system and also a local list serve about this incident where someone got in through a window. a ground floor window that was left open. once that personot inappropriately touched a woman who lived there. the suspect got away and police are working on a description, but they also want to warn people about leaving the windows open, even though the weather might warrant it. >> people ar
