let's bring in stephen engle and that chief rates correspondent for asia. we have concerns about demand when it comes to the market and lots to do with china, specifically with evergrande and the property market. stephen: a lot of investors were looking at this preliminary plan the end of july came and went without a preliminary restructuring plan. the company filing saying they have delivered more bullet points, preliminary that restructuring principles, far short of what they were promising. investors want more clarity on that extensions, asset sales and it will stoke further worries any collapse could spark financial contagion. all you have to do is look at the exposure that banks have and it makes you a little worried. no other sector of china's economy has as large an exposure to the property sector as banks. 5.8 trillion u.s. dollars in outstanding mortgages in the chinese banking system. another $1.9 trillion, a total of 52 trillion yuan. some analysts, especially s&p global ratings says 2.4 trillion yuan, 6.4% of mortgages are at risk. this is a big

haidi: let's bring in stephen engle for more. also are chief rates correspondent for asia. i will start with you on evergrande. there were concerns we may not get this by the self-imposed deadline. what does this tell us, the fact we did not get more than the briefest of details. stephen: keep in mind evergrande is the most indebted develop in china, the poster child for all the problems in the property sector in china. there was a massive restructuring of its executive suite, a new ceo and cfo. i am not giving them a pass but they are essentially saying evergrande faced unintended complicated and challenging manners -- matters. i'm fumbling over my words as he was trying to explain why they did not come up with this restructuring plan as the country did promise as late as june. a couple of months ago, they said they would have this plan ready for offshore investors and onshore investors by july 31. it did not happen. they came up with the luminary restructuring principles but failed to give any more clarity on that extensions, on asset sales, and there are broader implicat

let's get more from stephen engle. with evergrande because we were expecting some sort of plan by the end of the month. not many days left now. stephen: there are so many questions surrounding evergrande obviously and then they have this word room shakeup with the ceo among others being forced to step down. but really,, and of course the global economy those participating in the global economy are looking at this as whether this will be, if it does indeed come down with china's largest ever debt restructuring. will it be the roadmap for other troubled developers to follow, and how much of a haircut will creditors be forced to take? the big question here, for example, overseas creditors on the dollar offshore bonds, how much will they be able to recover? the information loop has been fairly opaque. it leaves a lot of questions to be answered about what will be in, how much of a haircut will be in this debt restructuring plan if it does indeed come out by this weekend. it is a lot to do. haidi: they have done a lot in te

shery: bloomberg's stephen engle if there with the latest from hong kong. weakness in the u.s. economy, two quarters of negative gdp growth may not mean a recession, at least not yet. the big question remains, what does this mean for the federal reserve? kathleen hays is here. i have to say i was surprised this morning because i saw the durable goods numbers yesterday and we thought we would not go into contraction, and we did. kathleen: there is a lot of things moving in that report, and the consumer, that's part of it. even though the u.s. is in a technical recession, the national bureau of economic research and the arbiter of when we are in a recession still says, not yet. one of the big things they look at is jobs. but the numbers themselves, let's start there. -1.6% in the first quarter, down nearly a full percent in the second quarter. and when we look at the components, consumer spending, like i said, it only rose 1.0% at a quarterly annualized rate in the second quarter. it was 1.8% the quarter before, and when you are in a healthy economy you have
