i'm eric thomas. dion lim is covering the carr fire. the family of medi bledsoe confirms she died in the carr fire along with 4-year-old great granddaughter emily and 5-year-old great grandson james. on thursday night melanie caused her to come back to the home because the fire was getting close. the family claims police wouldn't let him through the roadblock because of the flames. the death toll stands at five including two firefighters. about a dozen people have been reported missing. here is a realtime map showing where the carr fire is burning. the red line is the active perimeter. redding is in the bottom right-hand corner. today cal fire said this fire is unprecedented burning in every direction at the same time and firefighters don't know why about 81,000 acres have burned due to a vehicle fire. officials say the number is likely to go even higher. today president trump approved an emergency declaration and ordered federal assistance for the firefighting efforts. governor brown has ordered flag to be flown at half staff on behalf

eric thomas is live at oakland city hall with more on this story. eric. >> reporter: dan, this could have been so much worse if that young man had been hit by an attack bullet instead of bullet fragments in the face as he was. as you mentioned, oakland police are redirecting resources and putting extra officers in high-crime areas in hopes of cutting back on some of this gun violence. >> when a child this young is struck by a bullet, it strikes us all. >> reporter: the city of oakland provided this video of mayor libby schaaf answering questions about the shooting. evidence of the gunfire is still visible the next day. the back window of this car blown out. what appears to be a bullet hole through this metal sign post, and nervous neighbors who did not want to talk on camera. it's just those neighbors police are appealing to. >> we know that community members were there. they witnessed this incident. there's information that can be provided to us to help us further our investigation. we're asking for community members to come forward. >> reporter: po

abc 7 news anchor eric thomas is live in clayton where evacuations are still in effect tonight, eric. >> reporter: and, dan, they're hoping to lift those evacuations later on tonight. as you said right now they are still in effect. however, we're witnessing what look to be mopping up operations behind me. you see at&t crews repairing phone lines brought down in the fire. down here, fire equipment from contra costa fire, a tanker and engine right there, keep putting out hot spots in this th able to save just about all the homes up here except for three outbuildings, and unfortunately one house. this is the one home firefighters were unable to save. the rubble and the small gas-fed fire, the only signs that something built by hand once stood here. and after we brought it to a firefighter's attention, even that fire was extinguished. now, unless something goes wrong, it's mostly mopup work. >> firefighters are driving all around the incident, are inside the perimeter of the fire making sure they mop up and completely put the fire out. at least 100 feet from the perimeter of the fire. >>

eric thomas is live at oakland police headquarters at the neighborhood that really was ground zero for fireworks last night. >> reporter: that would be at the fruitville district. even though it's july 5th, we heard quite a bit of fireworks still going off and quite a bit of illegal fireworks set off last night. even 17 hours after the professional fireworks shows ended, the amateurs were still at it in oakland as we and the city councilman found out when he was talking with a constituent. >> you hear that right now? >> reporter: that was no firecracker and it sounded relatively close. >> i live a block, two blocks away from here. it's the worst worst i've ever seen. >> reporter: the littering and debris in garbage containers appear to verify that with bottles and rocket mortars and triggering nerves in residents as far away as lake merit. >> it got really scary. is that fireworks or >> the birds are on the lake and kids trying to sleep. >> reporter: officers were trying to keep some semblance of order writing 56 citations, five arrests, towed one vehicle and confiscated 15 fireworks.

. >> i'm eric thomas. a live look outside know from our east bay hills.ady foggy and gloomy in some areas. let's get right to spencer christian. >> i hate to sound like a hedging forecaster, but it's iffy. the live doppler 7, the fog is beginning to develop along the coastline. it never cleared all the way today. get down to the forecast animation starting a little bit later this afternoon, the fog layer will deepen along the coastline, pushing through the golden gate and out over the bay as we approach 9:30, the scheduled time of this evening's fireworks. let's take a look at what conditions will be like at that time. 9:30 this evening we expect some fog moving through the golden gate, finger fog reaching across the bay toward oakland. that means the fog may obscure your view of the fireworks here in san francisco. it will be clear in the south bay and the east bay and the far north bay. temperatures at that hour, 56 to 59 degrees in most bay area locations. the fireworks displays away from san francisco should take place in good viewing conditions, but

eric thomas is live in clayton where the evacuations, eric, are still in effect?porter: they are still in effect, and it is still oppressively hot out here. the winds are occasionally gusty. that's a bit of a m,souch today yesterday. that's how things can go. on this house, fire approached on three sides, but firefighters were able to surround it and keep it intact. further up on espara drive up there, that's the one home you were talking about that was completely destroyed, just burned to the ground. and we saw remnants of that. that's where we start. by late this morning this was the last open flame we could find in the hills above clayton fed by gas from a nearby propane tank. we brought it to a firefighter's attention, and it was quickly shut off. most of the work now consists of mopping up. >> firefighters are driving all around the incident, are inside the perimeter of the fire making sure they mop up and completely put the fire out, at least 100 feet from the perimeter of the fire. >> reporter: it's a far cry from yesterday when the fire exploded to 247 acr
