fitz? >> reporter: we all know that distracted driving behind the wheel of a car is a big problem, but think about this. when it happens to a metro train operator with hundreds of lives at stake, well, it's even more concerning. the federal transit agency says 47 instances of operators running red lights have occurred in the last two years. while this may sound like a no-brainer, metro is now bringing in experts on the brain and human behavior to figure out why this is taking place. now, according to reports, metro has brought in neurological scientists to start loo this issue. a report in "the washington post" claims they have consistently left platforms without full conscious aware this is of their action. those 47 times red light violations over the last two years, that's nearly twice a month. metro has taken steps to address the problem including installing systems which intervene if a train operator does this before they are supposed to. remember, those lights are important. they space
