gillian? gillian: well, u.s.r protection is releasing new numbers for southern border crossings. they show total encounters at the southern border in april were down a staggering 51% from march. the number of unaccompanied minors down 76%. the number of families crossing the border down 86% and single adults also down 41%. the trump administration says all of this is a good thing. acting deputy homeland security secretary ken cucinelli joins us now to discuss. mr. secretary, here's the thing, the trump administration has, you know, been saying for a while that any reduced numbers of border crossings is a a good thing. but now we're in this situation where, you know, we're in the middle of this global pandemic. nobody's moving around as much as they used to a couple of months ago. how do you know what to attribute these reduced crossing numbers to? >> well, i would say that part of them is as a result of the cdc or health order that we're enforcing on the border which is allowing us to return about 80 of the peopl

jon: gillian turner from washington, gillian, thank you.for more insight, let's turn to dave lawler. dave, i think that ultimately took place in late 90's, isn't it violating the commitments by the laws that it is intending to pass here? >> that is certainly president trump's conclusion, so, yes, so when you mentioned hong kong was handed back from the uk to china in 1997 basically they set up two separate systems, one country two systems where hong kong would be technically part of china but have own judicial system, civil liberties and basically operate as an entry point into china for companies and for people who are quite weary of the chinese system and the current law appears to be the biggest threat since 1997 to that level of autonomy. jon: does the chinese communist party simply think the world is too focused on the coronavirus battle to pay attention to what's going on in hong kong or why is it flexing its muscles in this way? >> dave: that could certainly be part of it. massive protests last year which were clearly unacceptable to

chris: chuck, let's pick up on what gillian said.l barr, you'll have republicans who are saying he's cleaning up from the mess of the james comey fbi, you have others saying that he's doing as adam schiff said, he's doing donald trump's dirty work. i'd like you to react to that and also how do you expect the judge in this case, emmett sullivan, who is going to have to hear the decision to drop the case and who has been very tough on michael flynn, he talked about him selling his country out, how do you expect him to react when he hears this case and the decision to drop it? >> well, first on bill barr, it's abundantly clear that two things are true about bill barr. he thinks the mueller investigation was wrong, a fiasco, and he's going to try and clean that up in his view, no matter what. and secondly, he doesn't particularly care about the heat he might get from democrats. and there's a basic underlying fact here that's crucial to understanding what's going on and that is that the flynn predicament has turned into sort of a cause on

gillian, i lived through the devastating riots of 1968 which left many urban areas scared for more than two decades. do you think the national media are playing this, the 24/7 media on that level or is it too soon to say whether this calms down in a few days? >> the problem with the idea that this is all going to calm down is that there is still -- justice hasn't been served. the first steps were taken pretty quickly. the officers who were on the scene, all four of them, lost their jobs. that was the immediate step one. now, one of them has been charged. but he hasn't been convicted. he has to of be tried first. he hasn't been convicted and justice is not going to be served until the sentence matches what every american who has looked at the video with their own two eyes sees which is the murder of an american on an american street in broad daylight on m memorial day. that's how you start healing these wounds when people across the united states see that the criminal justice system will work in the way it's supposed to, that it's intended to work. quick note on the riots, every time we

howie: gillian, in this case as many others in recent years, it was smartphone video that showed for example the police account that george floyd was resisting arrest was a lie. without that video, of course it's become so common with people all carrying cameras, do you think this would even have become a national story? >> who knows the answer to that but thank god that that woman and those bystanders on the corner of that minneapolis sidewalk had their cell phones and had the wherewithal during that moment of crisis to whip them out, get the footage that america needed to see. i think what hits home for the american people and for journalists covering this is that though we're very lucky to have that coverage in this instance, though we were very fortunate a few weeks ago to have that cell phone footage, again, of the moment that ahmaud ash bring was shot in -- arbery was shot in broad daylight as well, these are the horrors we now have on camera. think of the tens of thousands of murders we don't have. it sort of compounds the heartbreak. a quick note on media unity here. i think

gillian turner, with the news in washington. gillian? >> good afternoon, harris.ots of controversy surrounding the unmasking of general michael flynn this morning. it's really important that we pause and take stock of the facts, and what we do know to be true as of right now. we've been digging into these numbers all morning long, harris. it turns out the office of the director of national intelligence, agency that ric grenell currently oversees, does actually do some self reporting on unmasking. so, let's take a look at the numbers. so far, the trump administration has requested unmaskings in 2019, a total of 10,012 times. 2018, 16,721 times. in 2017, 9,529 times. in 2016, the obama administration, 9,217 times. now, we don't, unfortunately, as of now, have numbers predating 2016. we are digging into that as soon as we are able to get those, if we are able to get them we will bring them to you. in the meantime, senator rand paul saying all these obama-era officials were abusing their authority. take a listen. >> i think it amounts to sort of illegal eavesdropping

gillian turner, what are you picking up there in washington? >> good afternoon to you. so picking up on the list because that's the latest thing you're talking about, lots to unpack here. the first thing that jumps out at us as of the former vice president joe biden is on the list, kind of an unexpected move. but aside from that, going over the members on this list, it all appears to be mid-level to top-tier level obama administration officials. a lot of these folks are not political appointees, a lot of them are career civil servants who served in democratic and republican a ministrations over years. one of them, lieutenant durrant general douglas lute served in the bush administration on the iraq policy issue. he went on to be the wars are for iraq and afghanistan for president obama. he then even served at the beginning of the trump administration so this is somebody who, you can't really shove him into one particular corner are or another so that's an important kind of point here when we are laying the groundwork. you can't say that all these people are liberals or
