there has not been any mention of goto as part of the prisoner swap for some time. one mild bit of optimism is that the video clip released by isis if it is genuine at least as of a few hours ago, kenji gootto was still alive. japan has been on the back foot ever since this crisis began 10 days ago. japan is hoping that, if the prisoner swap does go ahead that kenji gootto will be part of it. >> there's been a lot of pressure by the jordanian people put on its government. what kind of pressure is being put on the government in japan? >> street demonstrations and intense pressure on the authorities to give up the iraqi prisoner in exchange for the pilot. i think people are trying to get used to the idea that the conflict is taking place thousands of miles away, in which japan does not play a military role, has managed to affect its citizens in such a horrific manner. as things stand, the response here is rather muted. there is public rusher on prime minister shinzo abe to do all he can to -- public pressure on prime minister shinzo abe to do all he can to secure goto

we understand isis has reached out directly to kenji goto's wife. have you heard any similar tale as far as this pilot's family is concerned? >> reporter: we are still looking. we're trying to get in touch again with the family of the pilot to see what they have heard. the only thing we're hearing at this point in time is from the jordanian government reiterating their same position saying they will ralitsa jeed da rishawi, but they want proof of life something the jordanians have been asking for for some time something they have not received. we heard from jordanian's prime minister for some time some weeks, they have been involved in indirect negotiations through indirect channels to try to secure the release of the jordanian pilot. jordan is under a lot of pressure to bring him back home. it's unclear what that's going to take. at no point has isis offered his release. we know they're asking for a swap of kenji goto for sajida rishawi. no public demand has been made for the release of the juror datedian pilot. whether there's any demand made behi

japanese journalist kenji goto. it's not clear if isis will spare his life if jordan meets the demands. we're following the latest developments with our team of experts. cnn's will ripley live in tokyo, joe mona is in aman jordan. at the pentagon cnn's barbara starr. in washington peter bergen. i want to start with you first, will. do we have any indication that this exchange will actually happen? >> reporter: well this news carol, just coming out of jordan that they still have yet to receive proof of life is very discouraging for government officials here in tokyo. according to the latest isis propaganda message, the condition for kenji goto's survival is a prisoner exchange at the border between syria and southern turkey in less than 30 minutes from now. isis demanding that sajida al-rishawi be handed over in exchange for goto's life. while this new propaganda message doesn't specifically threaten goto's life if this deal doesn't go down it does tlezen the life of the jordanian pilot. given, carol, that we're deal

have we heard from goto's family members since these developments? >> the last public update we got from the japanese government here in tokyo was shortly after midnight local time. the chief cabinet secretary gave a brief statement where he said there is no news to report he reiterated the severity of the situation and of course said japan's number one priority is getting the journalist kenji goto back home safely. we knew it was going to be a very tricky and difficult negotiation from the beginning, especially considering the fact that the latest isis propaganda video where there is an image of kenji goto holding a photo of that jordanian pilot, mu'adh sak yusuf al al kasasibah, goto relays the message it is his life in exchange for the iraqi terrorist in jail in jordan sajida al rishawi. it seems to be a lot of people feel very unlikely that isis would be willing to compromise in this situation and of course now that this deadline is hours passed there is very grave concern about how this could end for both the pilot and for kenji goto. we have no
