that means chuck schumer and hakeem jeffries will have a lot of say. growing to-do list next year. take a look at some of the other things he needs to do. resolving the debt limit some time by the plidal of the year. trump eagerly tried to get congress to take that issue off his plate, but as you mentioned 170 republicans refused even he threatened primary challenges for those who continued without the debt limit. they'll also have to confirm trump's nominees during the first few months of next year. that's going to take up real tile in the senate. in addition republicans want to do bills on border and immigration, tax cuts maybe, too. these are all going to be difficult tasks to get done, and they're going to have a wafer thin house majority. and finally republicans tell they can't have this chaos next year. they can't have trump and his team whether it's allies like elon musk or whoever else throwing last minute demands and wrenches into the works. they have to communicate better and they have to get on the same page. >> quick question about a vote f

but hakeem jeffries? >> i think actually, in some ways it will be more interesting to watch hakeem jeffries buzz those margins in the house are so narrow that in a percentage basis, the republicans actually have less of a majority in the house. so his ability to create problems for the trump agenda by keeping the democratic caucus unified may say a lot about how much of this trump agenda gets done. there are more than enough senate democrats to use the filibuster to block legislation. but i actually think it would be interesting to see how hakeem jeffries does that, he is pretty junior, he has not been around the block as long as chuck schumer has. we saw that nancy pelosi still had a pretty strong hand in the leadership of the democratic minority and how hakeem jeffries evolves in his role. and that will tell us how successful the democrats are at stopping his agenda and how successful they are at articulating their own agenda that is something they had a lot of trouble with in 2024. >> before e with get

and now you have hakeem jeffries saying he's not he wouldn't even support a clean bill. he's claiming they had a deal. so my guess is christmas is going to come and christmas is going to go, and they're going to be stuck there in dc. am i wrong? >> well, the challenge is and the alternative would be to pass each of the individual spending bills. there are 12. they've passed, you know, 70% of those in the house of representatives. the senate has done none under chuck schumer. but the reason they haven't done all of them is they do not have the votes. so if you're going to fund the entirety of government and avoid a shutdown, you have to get both of those bills through the house and senate. and they're not there right now. and that takes days and weeks. and so everybody was going toward this interim spending bill, the cr, which would run until the middle of march. and the whole premise here was to clear the deck for president elect trump. that's not going to happen. it shuts down over christmas or gets into january. and you start the new congress on january 3rd and there's

what did you make of hakeem jeffries and his leadership?nd do you think, look, they started with a bipartisan bill that had some priorities for democrats in it that all got tossed out. do you think they got enough? >> well, certainly, because what democrats have always have as their priority is their true north is to do what's right by the american people. and that's why they put things in this bill, even in the bipartisan bill that was negotiated. and that then was blown up by by a couple of tweets by elon musk. and then as he, you know, wag the dog and trump followed suit. everything fell apart. but i think hakeem jeffries, what you saw was somebody who actually knows how to legislate, who actually knows how the government works, who actually can keep his caucus together. democrats were unified for the most part in this. and frankly, at the 11th hour, johnson had to come to democrats for help to make sure that the government wasn't shut down, to essentially save his skin. and democrats, of course, did not want the government to shut down,

hakeem jeffries is in a position of power. he has to provide votes for anything to pass. what the suppose it promise mike johnson has made to -- as you said -- the hardliners in his party, is he would give $2.5 trillion in deficit and debt reduction next year in exchange for getting this through. that seems like an incredibly unrealistic promise that he is making that, you know, doesn't seem possible. i just want to put up for our audience. if you look up where the budget money goes, what we spend, a 50 social security. national defense is 18% which seems untouchable. it touches every state. you can't get to it by, let's say, foreign aid. foreign aid is also nothing compared to that. what are you going to cut? are you going to cut healthcare? i think that people think there is more easy money to get them there really is. talk about how that's going to look in march when we are having this fight again and the hardliners are demanding $2.5 trillion in cuts. >> i suspect they need $2.5 trillion in cuts over 10 years. remember, the discretionary budget of the united states, t
