out of santa clara said to be recovering nicely this morning after flying from san jose to maui, hawaii, in the wheel well of a plane. authorities say it's remarkable 16-year-old survived five and a half hour flight. we are joined now live from the international airport in san jose. lucky guy, right? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. that boy is now in fbi protective custody, and the fbi confirmed that yes he did hide inside the wheel well and somehow, someway survived conditions, freezing temperature conditions that should have killed him. we have a photo of the of that boy being taken by the paramedics to the hospital in maui. the fbi says he was unconscious for most of the flight, when he got out he was hungry and disoriented, but otherwise uninjured. airline sources tell us they found footprints inside the wheel well. apparently had had an argument with his family, that's when he hopped the fence and stowed wow. five hours later, he was in maui. >> i was approached by airline personable and asking what he was doing out on the pray pron. >> within a few minutes up at that altitude, the

in when hawaii airport officials saw him wandering around on the tarmac. they say he appeared disoriented and was also very tired. he was found with nothing but a pocket comb on him when he land. i spoke to the airport duty manager today. he said that this 16-year-old boy most likely passed out for the majority of this flight. he did regain consciousness after he landed. authorities also say that when they began questioning him, he had a hard time hearing. he eventually was able to hear a little bit better. but he was also hungry. they tell us that they bought him lunch. they served him some hawaiian cookies and water and he did gain some strength after that. but they expected him to be in worse condition. >> it's a miracle. you know, to survive a flight for five hours and 35,000 feet with no oxygen. it is not a temperature- controlled area as well. to survive that was a miracle. >> it is also not immediately clear how this boy survived in an unpressurized space where temperatures can fall well below zero. the space itself is also a tight squeeze. >> i'm a
