if you look at the hayward fault, we see lots of small quakes and little pocket along the fault up to about magnitude 4, 4 1/2. we don't see anything larger often maybe once every couple of centuries or so. so the probability that this sequence is indicating something larger is small, maybe 1%. >> the depth we see is six miles. we had calls from various parts of the bay area from people who felt it. is that depth, is the shallowness of it the reason it was felt so widely? >> actually, if you are really close to the quake's epicenter the shallower the more strongly you feel it. because of the attenuation of the waves through the crest, if the quake is deeper it is over a wider area. the deeper the event the more widely it will be felt. >> that's explains why so many callers are saying only a 3.6 it felt bigger to me. really felt a huge jolt including for us here in the studio in san francisco that was the case. curious doctor about all the downgrades. you talked about the measuring. that's totally normal nothing to do with the proximity of the size s at berkeley or anything like that?
