hopkins. it's that they are recruiting among all of these other camps and garrison's up in the new york area. they are sending recruiting officers down here into pennsylvania, into these other states, to the point where we've got soldiers from 11 of the states in the regiments. the only ones we don't have is i haven't found anyone from south carolina or georgia in this regiment. but they've got somebody from every other state. so they've got this tremendously unique regiment that was called canadian, was called congress's own, but in some ways is a microcosm of the continental army itself. that within its companies, and many of these companies were segregated by states. there was certainly at least two of the companies that were still french canadian, with officers who were still talking french with their soldiers, along with all of these other recruits. so sergeant major john h. hopkins, from what i can see, had actually first enlisted in 76 in a pennsylvania unit. had served through it and t

is john hopkins, it's printing, it's pennsylvania.now, yeah -- it's -- it's very likely, unfortunately i couldn't nail it down for sure because he didn't say in his journal anywhere that he was a runaway apprentice. i wonder why. there was this and of course you get this little hint in this, looking at hopkins in his story is that he had run away from -- david seller was the partner of hall. david hall who had been the partner of benjamin franklin, who was the most notorious runaway apprentice of all, right? so you're going, oh, he's following that kind of tradition in some form or another. well, from what it appears, he must of come back and served out his term as an apprentice or found something else because he is back here in pennsylvania, and in philadelphia. but obviously not finding a job for his own independent shop. and thus, there he was enlisting in the continental army during the revolution. in this thing. we followed him in but it also made sense why he would be us sergeant and why he would be a sergeant major. this is som

my point is this. 1620 there was a stephen hopkins there. who was someone who was fighting to build a life? that had nothing to do with the question of slavery and had everything to do with a solid grasp on those middle-class principles and values and individualism. which ultimately characterized the society? and i would submit. far more characteristic of this society than anything you see described in the 1619 project. i think it's the project itself. the 1619 project is focused on privilege because of new york times came into being in the early 1850s after defender of privilege has never changed and that's all they know how to talk about. but the point is this. ask yourself. remember i said they're still descendants of hopkins here. ask yourself this question. why would the university become the kind of nation that could end slavery might have something to do with the kind of soul that stephen hopkins was? and the fact that they were very many of them. remember as we whip through the civil war. over 600, americans lost their lives on both
