ilana gold joins us live from ilana? >> reporter: chris, we can tell you the victim is a 2-year-old boy and right now he's in critical condition. the fire started here at this home on avenue p near east 38th th street. neighbors saw a lot of smoke coming from near the child's bedroom on the second floor. firefighters got it under control fairly quickly. intense flames, they say smoke was the big issue out here. again, the child is at the hospital now in critical condition from smoke inhalation. police say he will be moved to a hospital in staten island for more treatment. just moments ago, we spoke with a woman across the street. she says a family of six lives at this home and everyone got out safely except for the 2- year-old boy. >> they're a close knit family, you know, the mom, the dad, like they're good. they do a lot with the kids. their kids play with my son. so, yeah, it's pretty close to home. it's really sad. we pray that he's good. he comes out, you know, okay and no after effects or anything like that. >> it

ilana gold joins us live from the park. >> reporter: the victim is a 53- year-old man. police say he was walking in this area on the upper west side when the suspect asked for money, and then strangled him and robbed him. we want to show you this picture. this is a sketch of the man police are looking for. here is what we know. the crime happened 11:00 on thursday night, the victim was walking through the rammables area by west drive and 79 the street. the suspect apparently went up to him saying he was hungry and needed money but when the victim said no and walked away the suspect followed him and put him in a choke hold until he passed out. when the 53-year-old woke up 30 minutes later, his wallet and his backpack with the cash and keys and jewelry were gone. the victim went to the hospital to get checked out the following day. two weeks ago, we talked to the nypd commissioner bill bratton about the quality of life issues and pan handling and here is what he had to say. >> there was a gentleman sitting on the sidewalk with a sign, i'm hungry, give me money, it is not

ilana gold is live from mount ilana? overnight in the neighborhood that suspect. this morning they still had this area blocked off. while they investigate. the shooting happened when an undercover officer was trying to buy an illegal gun from a suspect and now an innocent bystander is seriously hurt. investigators have worked through the night, near the intersection of at the tecumseh avenue in mount vernon to figure out how the undercover police operation went terribly wrong. >> i heard the sound. i thought it was fireworks. >> they were gunshots that went through the win dose of the black car and left shell casings across the neighborhood. >> so scary. >> reporter: investigators say the problem stems from an undercover buy of illegal guns. they tell us the suspect contacted an undercover officer with the nypd on friday. he apparently said he had guns for sale and they met up in the bronx. the suspect got into the officer's car and told him to drive to mount vernon. when they arrived in the westchester county neighborhood, a second suspect got into the vehicle. >

reporting on staten island, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >>> developing on staten island now, a shootout with an armed suspect -- [ pause ] [ no audio ] >> reporter: up until the last minute there was some reason to believe that garland tyree would surrender but as you may be able to tell from all the bull markets over there, police say the wanted man died shooting straight at them. at noon. police moved in on 38-year-old garland tyree. he walked out of his home fired this loaded assault rifle according to police after refusing to be taken alive on a probation violation warrant. loved ones were hysterical as the wanted gang member died in a barrage of police gunfire. the standoff began at dawn. u.s. marshals and the nypd came to take him into custody. he was armed to the teeth with guns and ammo. when police tried to take tyree in about 5:45 a.m., firefighters were called to battle smoke inside the home. that's when police say the wanted man shot fdny lieutenant james hayes twice. >> once through the right buttocks and left calf. >> reporter: both bullets exited his body. for hours there was
