jade. >> reporter: good morning. there are some serious concerns this morning. we can show you this boat in question. it is rocking from side to side on the surf right now. three people were on board. a captain and two deck hands and about a couple thousands pounds of crab. we understand that crab is still on the vessel this morning. this is what happened, someone called the fire department for help after realizing a 65-foot francis beach at half-moon bay state park. that was around 1:00 a.m. the fire department responded but all on board managed to get off the boat without assistance. no one was hurt. but the biggest concern right now is a diesel spill. a boat salvage operator told us there's no leak at this hour but the coast guard's pollution team just arrived on scene and is evaluating the situation. they will be here for at least a couple of hours because they are attempting to get hold of the crab boat's owner. the coast guard is not responsible for moving the vessel offshore. the owner has to go through his in

good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. the souvenir shop doesn't have a name on the outside of it and in fact, the sign said discounted perfume. last night, police swarmed the building investigating a deadly double shooting inside and that happened before 8:30 last night and the souvenir shop is at 269 jefferson street and two store employees were shot dead. a man and woman. the san francisco police arrested one man in connection with the shooting and the police spokesman we spoke to last night could not give us details on how that man was apprehended or the connection between the suspected shooter or some store employees. the spokesman told us that police are not looking for the suspects. >> we don't been the motive into the particular crime, but, it's something that does not normally happen around here and this is a huge tragedy for the city. >> reporter: and that is unclear, the motive. fisherman's wharf is unquiet. as soon as we hear more information, we'll pass it to you. live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu ch

so what are they saying, jade? >> reporter: well, we just learned that the vessel, the owner of this vessel, has just arrived here. we are live at half-moon bay. you can see that's the vessel phyllis. that boat ran ashore earlier this morning. we understand the owner of this vessel just got hold of his insurance company and may try to pump the fuel off the boat. the biggest concern right now is any kind of spill. the u.s. coast guard is monitoring the situation. that's who we're touching base with every half hour. there is about 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel aboard the cell you see rocking in the water. but this boat is not leaking at this time. there were several first responders. we spoke to the half-moon bay fire department who arrived first on the scene. they received a call about this vessel which the coast guard says initially capsized around 1:00 this morning. but you can see that the boat has just run ashore at this point. someone noticed that the 65- foot vessel on francis beach at half-moon bay state park

jade hernandez is live. jade. >> reporter: good morning. we are live on the cal campus this morning. 150 managers and support staff will be eliminated. that was the latest announcement that reached students. the announcement did not come as a surprise. a quarter of the jobs pay more than $100,000 with benefits. and the layoffs will cut by a third. they proposed by cutting $500 million from the uc system. the jobs in the cutting block are in addition to the 600 positions cal laid off last year. the consultants that had been working closely with administrators plan to cut $75 million. the university will do so in part half involuntarily, half by not filling positions, and retirement. we spoke to a man that experienced a recent layoff but has a job in berkeley and asked about his take. >> i mean, i imagine if i was at the -- i imagine if i was at the top, i would try to get richer if i would. the rich are getting richer and the gap is dividing. >> reporter: campus police and faculty have been eliminated on the cuts. they will escape cuts this

jade hernandez explained this in our live report. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. for nearly a decade san francisco has provided this service for the city employees while the insurance companies have not. tonight here at berkeley city hall, berkeley city council members will decide on a very similar measure. the city council will vote on whether or not to set aside $20,000 a year for its city employees for transgender reassignment surgery. the taxpayer money would not accrue each year. it would stay the same. money would be available to any of the city's 1500 employees on a first come first serve basis. a few employees have already inquired according to one local newspaper. the amount would cover part of the surgery costs which range from $7,000 to more than $50,000. the city asked to include the surgery but insurance company says insurance premiums for the entire staff would have to increase for sex change operations to be included. so the city council is expected to decide on a measure on a proposal tonight. the proposal was initially proposed in 2007 just about

good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. this morning we've learned from the local paper that 27-year- old hoseys rodriguez bought four new tires from this tire and auto repair shop in patterson. any piece of information is welcome in this investigation. an amber alert was issued for his 2003 silver toyota corolla. it's seen here in this surveillance video an hour before the abduction. they haven't been able to compare any tire treads to those found around the time of the abduction near the canal because rodriguez has special oversized tires and a spare on his corolla. the owner of the tire and auto repair told the patterson irrigator he gave investigators the receipt for the purchase of four new tires back in april of 2009 by rodriguez. at this point divers have pulled nine vehicles from the canal. they've only compared one of the tire treads found. that from a stolen silver lexus. last night the family held a candle light vigil. more than 100 people came out to show support. the mother is convinced her son is not in the ca

ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now with what she has to say. jade. >> reporter: good morning. police say a shooting led to a high speed chase which ended right here when an officer opened fire and killed an armed young man. let me take you to the scene yesterday afternoon. moments after the chase ended around 4:20 the suspect's car, a red infinity, crashed into another car here in east oakland. the passenger and the suspects got out and police say armed with two guns refuse today comply with putting the weapons down. the officers opened fire and the suspect died on the spot. as for the driver in the suspect's car he too got out and tried to run. police say the suspect's car was involved in a drive by shooting in the 7600 block of lockwood not too far from the crash site. neighbors tell us the shooters drove by and just opened fire seemingly without a target. no one was hurt but officers at a nearby substation spotted the red infinity and took off after it. we learned after the shooting oakland police experienced problems with their radio systems. dispatchers could not speak to

ktvu jade hernandez is joining us live. she is in sonoma county. what happened, jade? >> reporter: it's an unsolved mystery. the dead birds were found off of highway 101 in sonoma county. the california highway patrol reported to a scene only seen in arkansas and louisiana. more than 100 boards have been clustered on the ground. you are looking at a picture court see of the press democrat. the birds were all the same type and being tested by a biologist right now. no immediate word on what caused the birds death. the chp who we contacted this morning contacted the california department of fish and gain. you might remember on new years eve 5,000 red winged blackbirds fell from the sky. they died to blunt trauma to all organs. more recently 500 birds were found in louisiana. 300 miles from the arkansas incident. all are under investigation and we hope to hear back from the california highway patrol for more information about what happened here. reporting live jade hernandez. >>> san francisco is expected to have an interim mayor by this afternoon. the man to be opponente

jade hernandez joins us now. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. in an hour and a half we expect to see authorities out here. divers will not be going inside of this water this morning. it's just too cold and murky. today authorities will use sonar equipment. joining us is the deputy sheriff. thank you for joining us this morning. i understand that you pulled a stolen silver lexus out of the canal yesterday. what is going on with that car today? >> that car once it was pulled out of the water we had our crime scene technician come out here to the scene. they processed that car meaning they took photographs of it. especially the tires because the tire is a key piece of evidence. >> reporter: and that key piece of evidence because there were tire tracks leading to the water and they were dated around tuesday when the little boy went missing. >> that is correct. the silver lexus matching very closely to the toyota corolla. they took photographs of the tires and the tread. we are comparing those photographs to the photographs of the tire tracks left he

jade hernandez is live. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning.expect ed lee to be the new interim mayor but numerous other names keep floating around. the latest out of the san francisco chronicle says san francisco public utilities chief ed heir ring -- harrington is in the mix. today is the board of supervisors final day in office they will vote on who they want leading the city for the next year. then on saturday the new board of supervisors sworn in will vote to install the mayor. ed lee is vacationing in asia and will be back on sunday. he released a statement saying i am honored to be considered for the position of the interim mayor. mayor gavin newsom supports lee's nomination. >> you want something extraordinary. this is a city that should be ashamed of itself in terms of how we treated asian americans in the past. particularly chineses. here we are about to have our first chinese leader. it is a big, big deal. >> reporter: speculation over who will lead san francisco will be over no later than this weekend. next tuesday will be the new c

jade hernandez joins us from san rafael. she just spoke to a fire chief. >> reporter: the battalion chief told us it could be seen from 580 when it broke out. it involved two homes this morning. th fire began shortly after 3:00. flames ignited inside of a vacant home and quickly spread next door. the second home had a couple inside. the man and woman were able to get out safely, though. san rafael firefighters were able to put out flames in less than an hour. pg&e shut off power to both homes. we have been told by the fire chief this morning that the fire started in the garage of the first trilevel home and quickly spread next door. renovations were being done on that home. the fire is not suspicious in behavior. firefighters is assessing damage to the second home where a man and woman became alerted to flames. >>> the couple noticed the fire next door. it did not extend into the fire next door yet. >> reporter: no one was hurt in this fire and fire investigate evers will still have -- and fire investigators will still have

ktvu's jade hernandez got reaction from the boy's mother and jade joins us now with this update from san jose. >> reporter: good morning. we've been in contact with this abducted boy's mother all morning. she sent us pictures of the little boy. she's given us a little insight as to why this may have h appened. 4-year-old julianicardenas was ripped from his grandmother's arms yesterday around 4:00 by the man who is believed to be the biological father. authorities say jose esteban rodriquez kidnapped the boy. he has an extensive criminal record and is considered dangerous. he was last seen wearing c heckered sports -- checkerted shorts and a beanie. >> he's never been like this in the past. this is really out of the ordinary for him. >> reporter: that was juliani's mother, tabatha. she's eight months pregnant with rodriquez' child. rodriquez was last seen wearing a silver toyota corolla, with the california license plate number 6 hbw 445, with oversized tires and a spire tire at the left rear wheel. electronic message boards across the state are alerting drivers about this abduction.

jade hernandez has more. good morning, jade >> reporter: the announcement came in a campus bulletin. faculty and campus police escapee d cuts. 150 managers and support staff are gone. the announcement did not come as a surprise. about a quarter of the jobs and layoffs will cut the managers on campus by a third. earlier this week governor jerry brown proposeed cutting from the system. the jobs are in addition to the 600 positions cal laid off last year. a consultant advised where the cuts should be made the consultant expects to cut raisings by $75 million. by june of this year the campus expects to eliminate 20 jobs president we're waiting to hear back from a university spokesperson. we'll bring you any information they might have for us later on. jade hernandez, back to you >>> a protest is expected to start right about now in concord dense the plans to close down schools at the mt. deab low unifyied school district. parents are trying to save silver elementary school. it's one of several recommended to be c

good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in downtown benicia where the fog is thick. it's not the only spot in the bay area. we spoke to an oakley man who said drivers need to use c aution. >> especially in this area here, there's been a lot of fog. so people need to make sure they back off the other cars and don't tailgate. >> leave in plenty of time so you are not plate and -- la and not rushing. give yourself plenty of time. >> reporter: take a look at t his. the california highway patrol can't say for certain fog played a factor in this accident. but air -- but the area where it happened was thick. the chp officer we spoke to but who did not want to go on c amera, said the only involved a ford bronco. around 3:00 a.m., the bronco lost control along the curve at southbound 680 before bayshore road and overturned. this turned -- shut down the accident for about 20 minutes. at 5:30 this morning, they had to cut it down to give caltrans time to clear the debris for the area. there is a dense fog advisory in effect

jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. >>> 7:02. overnight, a desperate s even- hour search came to a tragic conclusion on the rugged coast of sonoma county. just hours ago we learn a man who drove his motorcycle off highway 1 near jenner has died. the chp said the motorcyclist made some desperate cell phone calls immediately after the crash yesterday afternoon. the 48-year-old man immediately called his wife. he then called 911. he told emergency dispatchers, he lost control of his harley and had landed in some thick brush between the highway and the ocean but he couldn't tell them exactly where. that set off a massive search involving u.s. coast guard helicopters and several police agencies. >> they tried to gps and finally we went on foot. >> search teams finally found the man's body in some rough terrain. several hundred feet below the highway. the coroner has not yet released his name. >>> claudine wong is live in oakland and brings us all of the details on a continuing investigation involving a s hooting. >> reporter: good mor

jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. at this point, no diesel fuel has leaked. it's pretty amazing when you see this capsized boat right here along francis beach. high tide peaked a few hours ago and now salvage crews must wait for equipment and the high side to fall. you wouldn't know it by the way these men are dressed but they are surfers. >> yeah. just concerned about the pollution that the boat's leaving in the water, you know, when you add the -- it's cold enough now and then when you have debris in there, it makes it pretty dangerous. >> reporter: it didn't take the crew longto find the vessel. the boat was filled with a couple thousand pounds of crab and was rocking back and forth violently. the coast guard said it may have initially capsized and then righted itself. authorities say the captain put the boat on auto pilot and the crew fell asleep. >> luckily, today the surf wasn't that bad. but you are taking life into your hands when you get out there. there wasn't a high likelihood of diesel leaking diesel until it capsized earlier -- of the vessel leak

jade hernandez joins us now. jade. >> reporter: good morning, authorities are not giving up. they have used divers, sonar equipment, and search dogs and later this morning the california highway patrol will send up a helicopter over this canal. a birds eye view will allow for search teams to see anything that might float to the surface. one of the options has been to drain the canal but at a cost of $3 million an hour to the neighboring economies. it doesn't seem like much of an option since it takes 8-12 hours to drain the canal. one week ago today those two 27- year-old jose esteban rodriguez and four-year-old juliani cardenas disappeared. tire tracks leading into the canal matched the car. we spoke to rodriguez's mother yesterday. worried she pleaded for her son to come back to her. we spoke to the sheriff an hour ago. >> we haven't had any sightings or spottings that is more credible that leads us to this canal if that is very frustrating. it leaves us with a grim hope that what our witness saw most likely did happen and that car and the four-year-old boy is in the water

jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. >>> 8:35. in mountain view, police are out there searching for a man who attacked a woman while she was walking. police say the suspect grabbed the-year-old victim about 10:40 saturday night. police say the ticker dragged the woman 0 feet into an empty loot and then repeatedly punched her. she dreamed for help and that scared off the suspect. the suspect's description is pretty vague. say he's a latino man in his 0s. he's between 5'8'' and 5'10". if you have any information about this, contact mountain police. oakland police are searching for suspects in a shooting that seriously injured a man. police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound on nay avenue around 9:40 last night. the victim was rushed to the hospital. and police tell us this morning he's in critical but stable condition. at this point there's no motive for the shooting. we checked with oakland police this morning. they are still searching for the gunman who shot and killed a 15-year-old boy. he was a sophomore at fremont high

good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. one man is dead this morning and cal train is investigating. we're live at the california avenue cal train station in palo alto. you can see this right here. this spokeswoman spoke to us about half an hour ago. the train that struck the man was the last southbound train out of san francisco at midnight. no other trains or schedules were effected and all regular service resumes this morning. those on board the train, the passengers, crew and train engineer were not hurt overnight. they were delayed. another train picked them up here at this california avenue cal train station around 2:45. this is the first fatality of the year. last year there were 11 deaths in cal train. the year before that 19. and in about 15 minutes we're scheduled to interview cal train's spokeswoman. and as soon as we hear from her, we're going to give you an update in just about 30 minutes. reporting live from parking lot allot, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> petaluma police want your help this morning
