. >> janell wang joins nus sochi. this is the big ticket event. >> reporter: this is the big event, the crown jewel of figure skating, the lady's event. polina and her teammates left here to get some more skating in austria, but they've been back in sochi this week. the event takes place at the iceberg skating palace at 7:00 tonight. polina is the youngest of them at age 15. she plans to skate the same programs that she did at the u.s. championships last month, which landed her a silver medal and a spot on the olympic team. at her young age, she is a virtual unknown and some say she should have waited for the next winter games to compete. but she strongly disagrees. she's been training for this moment her entire young life. >> i don't want to be four years older and not as good as i was four years back and have been held back for that. so i'm happy they gave me my shot. i can't wait to prove myself at the games. >> reporter: and we are excited to watch polina edmunds. her boots were made in san carlos at a family owne

janelle wang is live in russia with the details g. morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, laura and scott. i'm going to talk about the flame first after traveling four months, 40,000 miles the flame has reached sochi. it will be used to late to olympic cauldron friday night t centerpiece of the coast of cluster. today it's moving into the city of sochi, the flame has had the longest journey for an olympics games. it started in moscow and stopped in more than 130 cities and towns across rush yaxt 14,000 torchbearers took part an has been to the north pole t space station and even the deepest lakes. also here, precious medals. the official olympic medals arrived. gold, silver and bronze also 100 made actually by a jewelry company in moscow. the value of the gold medal, about 600 bucks but if it was pure gold, this medal would be worth about $21,000. it is one of the largest gold medals in the history of the games. and there are 98 events so there's a lot of gold to be won. reporting from the sochi games, janelle wang, nbc bay area n

janelle wang joins us live in the mountain cluster.medalist is delaying his trip home to bring back dogs with him. >> reporter: i know. a lot of athletes are jumping on board. we have seen a lot of stray dogs here and they have all been friendly. some of the locals tell us it's because their homes have been demolished to make room for olympic plaza and these dogs which are allowed to roam. they are not like in the states where we have them on leashes can't find their way back. others wander around and roam free and mingle with others and go home. half of them are probably not strays but some are strays. i want to show you this is the main plaza in the mountain cluster. the clock tower. and then you see this monitor behind me too. we'll show you that in a bit. let's talk about the stray dogs. gus kenworthy, a silver medalist in that new event slopestyle free skiing. he adopted four stray dogs and his mother. he was supposed to go home to colorado monday but delayed the trip because some of the paperwork for the dogs have not gone throug

let's go back live to janelle wang.s live in olympic park outside the iceberg skating palace in russia. how is it going out there? >> reporter: it's getting a little busier. people arriving to the iceberg, competition begins about an hour and 15 minutes. 24 ladies advance from last night's short program including all three american ladies, they will skate in the free program. we'll know who will win gold. right now in first place in the lead is korea's yuna kim. russia's is in second. she is a dark horse. has a history of making mistakes in the free skate. then italy's kostner is in third. gracie gold is in fourth, followed by ashley wagner in sixth and polina edmunds in seventh. i spoke with kristi yamaguchi about their performances last night. >> polina is exciting to watch. ashley was solid and gracie gold sits in fourth so she is in striking distance of the podium for sure. >> reporter: yes. striking distance. in order for gracie gold to medal the top three have to make some flubs and possibly mistakes. for polina e

our own janelle wang is live in olympic park with more this morning. good morning, janelle. >> reporter: hi, kris. yeah, nick cunningham placed 13th earlier this week in the two-man sled, his teammate steven holcomb nabbed the bronze and ended a 62-year drought for that event for team usa. but cunningham has another opportunity this weekend in the four-man sled and unlike in vancouver where he was the brake man he now moves to the front as the driver and he is driving for gold. nick cunningham's desire to bobsled came later in life not earlier. after college. >> it was almost like a graduation gift for myself, i'm just going to tryout and see, you know, do something new something that i've never -- i've never been in the snow really. let's do. in >> reporter: 18 months later he's at the vancouver olympics. he didn't medal there but he's hoping with more experience and knowledge sochi will be different. >> 45% speed, 45% intensity, like, power and everything. and the rest just crazy. you got to be a little nuts. >> reporter: he calls it controlled chaos

. >> janelle wang is live outside the stadium in sochi. janelle, exciting today. what's the atmosphere out there now? >> reporter: it's picking up. the sun is setting. i put on my jacket because my lips are getting numb in the last live shot. as you look behind me that is fisht olympic stadium. people are starting to head that way so people are filing in for the opening ceremony. the athletes are excited about that. for their competition they got off to a rocky start last night as you saw in prime time, team usa the new figure skating team did not go well for them. the pairs team struggled and in the men's short program jeremy abbott crashed hard. after last night usa's in seventh place, they still have a chance if ashley wagner pulls off an incredible program saturday. another event team usa rocked it. snowboard slope style. jamie anderson and karly schorr did so well they skip the semifinals and go directly to the finals on sunday. for the men, no u.s. rider advanced directly to the finals but tahoe's chas guldemond will compete in the semifinals. more athletes

"today in the bay's" janelle wang live in sochi. we'll get to sean white in a second. first, we have learned that a woman snowboarder dropped out of the halfpipe event. >> reporter: yeah, today it is the women's turn. four americans scheduled to compete. but 17-year-old arielle gold had to drop out after she dislocated her shoulder during practice. but we still have three more american women competing including lake tahoe's hannah teter, won a gold and silver in the event. men's halfpipe snowboard, shaun white didn't medal at all, came in fourth. i it and switzerland's iouri podladtchikov named ipod, pulling off the yolo, you only live once. shaun white very gracious and congratulated him. a likable side to shaun white. >> for me, it's a tough night. i mean, i think that's all it is, one night. i don't think it makes or breaks my career. disappointing. i wanted to come out and land solid runs, which i did in the qualifying, and, you know, try to focus in and i came back, had amazing runs in the practice for the finals and just got two runs, it didn't work out. >> repor

our own janell wang arrived in sochi on thursday.s now sunday morning there, and she has a behind the scenes look for us at the last-minute preparations. >> reporter: good evening, diane. just behind me is the olympic stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies take place just a few hours ago, there was a rehearsal for the opening ceremony. cameras were not allowed inside, but you could feel the excitement gearing up for the start of the olympic games. a lot of activity. russian construction crews are working non-stop on last-minute projects. you could find workers at just about every turn, from the coastal to the mountain cluster, workingen on everything. there is also lots and lots of snow making being made on the mountain and brought in by the truckload. a mild wenter in sochi has not brought much snowfall. sun has left bare spots. the ski jump the most obvious example. but officials say no need to worry. workers hauled a snow making machine up today. by the start of the games, they say they will be liftoff. athletes from aro
