janine de la vega is right there talking to the family members and janine de la vega, they say it startedith the scene of an explosion. >> that is what woke them up and they started smelling something, a lot of smoke so they went to investigate and they saw they were already flames in the garage of their house. i want to show you where they are at. this is near fremont boulevard and dakota road and there are fire engines up and down the street. we just came from the house where it is still smoking but the fire has been knocked down and let's go to a picture that the fire department had tweeted earlier this morning, you can see flames were shooting out of the windows which were fully involved when fremont firefighters were involved. this was just before 4:30 and they do confirm it was the garage that was on fire and that's where they believe the fire started. two cars were parked in the driveway and also caught fire and it ended up extending into the attic and the flames also touched the adjacent house. the five people who were living inside a family of four had a friend staying with them,

ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live in san jose. bringing us reaction to these new troubles for the team. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. from a public relations standpoint this does not bode well for these 49ers players. this morning attorneys will be in court and they will be disguising driving under the influence, a hit and run accident, and weapons charges. 49ers line backer aldon smith has two cases. he faces illegal weapons charges after deputies serged -- searched his home. the.before he crashed his car into a tree and arrested for dui and possession of marijuana. 49ers cornerback chris culver was arrested two weeks ago for leaving the scene of an accident after he hit a bicyclist and crash into a witnesses car. police found brass knuckles in his car an illegal weapon. and the late toast be in trouble kaepernick and patton. they are investigates after an alleged incident at a hotel. the players told a woman to smoke marijuana then kaepernick undressed her and she passed out and ended up in the hospital.

janine de la vega is there at the crash scene now. so what do you know janine? >> reporter: we have learned in the past half hour that the victim is a black man between the ages of 30 and 40 years old. officers have blocked off capital expressway so they can investigate. the body of the man is still laying there in the eastbound planes. just before 2:00 a.m. people driving by in the area spotted a man down and called 911. emergency crews arrived and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. they are look for anybody who has witnessed the accident. they will be going around to the nearby businesses. now there is not a crosswalk where the man was hit but people in the area tell us that they see people illegally cross frequently. >> the homeless people, they don't use the crosswalks. they will just run across the street. and no, i go to the crosswalk because i don't want to get hit. >> reporter: it's unknown if the victim was homeless. it's just too early to tell who he was, where he was going, his identity. from where we are standing on capitol expressway we can't

janine de la vega is on the story and you talk to a neighbor who said they saw everything. >> yes, saw the flames, also heard a big loud boom coming from the house, just a very sad situation for this family who lives on woodridge place and we are told a mother grandmother and two children lived there and they are down the street where you see all the flashing lights in tears and that's because the house they lived in is just badly damage and they are all wrapped up in blankets being consoled by the neighbors. let's go to a picture, this is a picture taken by the police department when they arrived on woodridge place, this is on fremont boulevard we are told it it had started in the garage and also ended up spreading to an adjacent house and that did get some damage on its side. they were able to escape before firefighters arrived. a family friend was with the family of four who also escaped. here is what a neighbor said she heard. >> i heard a really loud boom and when i came outside, the flames were really high, all of these fire trucks were here, the neighbor across the street, her d

are being brought in today good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. dogs that sniff out accelerants are gonna be brought into the site later on in afternoon. you can see an excavator has been demolishing the building that used to house kntv. the area that investigators are going to concentrate on is where you ethat yellow tape -- you see that yellow tape attached to the beam. that's because firefighters think is the area where the fire started. >> reporter: heavy estimate was brought in this morning to demolish what's left of the abandoned building that caught on fire sunday. they need to tear down some of the structure to help clear a path for investigators. it wasn't safe for them to enter because there was a possibility that this building would collapse. fire officials say it will be a challenge because there's a lot of debris to pick through. they will be digging with shovels and using their hands to look for burn patterns and evidence of what started the fire. they said during the investigation, it's possible they may find potential victims. >> w

reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. >>> 8:04.fice in sacramento county is investigating a tragic highway crash that killed a man and his 14-year-old daughter. two young men are facing felony charges in their deaths after a high-speed chase and crash. a twin brother of one of the suspects is also being questioned. the tragic incident unfolded yesterday on interstate 80. the men led authorities on a chase that began in auburn following a home burglary. it ended with this horrific crash in antelope outside of sacramento. the father and his teen daughter were pronounced dead at the scene. officers arrested the suspects a short time later. >> i am glad everybody is in custody. certainly sad about the event and how they turned out. >> two sheriff's deputies were hurt in an earlier crash during the long chase. the suspects are expected to face homicide charges once they are released from the hospital. >>> april is distracted driving awareness month and right now law enforcement agencies across the state are stepping up their efforts to

good afternoon i am brian flores in for alex savage and janine de la vega has more on the possible search. >> reporter: right now the building is in ruins and it is a heap of debris. they are trying preserve the scene for evidence. fire officials are working on assembling the arson task force to start the investigation. they have been using the building which has been used as a shelter for the past nine months. the city owns it and about 35 people live inside and it's unknown what happened. he thinks everyone got out safe except for two dogs. >> it is crazy to wake up and not have anything and wake up and have everything you owned gone and you are already homeless. it is devastating. >>reporter: they will look for evidence on what started the fire and they will look for potential victims. it grew to five alarms and the flames were so intense that firefighters could not enter the building. we are told squatters had to treat it and there is speculation somebody cooking may have started the fire. >> we have seen propane tanks barbecues so there was a lot of home like items, things you would

janine. >> reporter: yes, dave.who live in this small apartment complex near regional center are shaken up. you can see right behind me. they've left candles here burning in this woman's memory. one of the neighbors did tell us that he saw a man with a moiblg helmet enter the -- motorcycle helmet enter the apartment and leave just before the woman's body was discovered by her husband. police interviewed potential witnesses in an attempt to try to track down who to bled to death -- who stabbed to death the woman. the woman was in her 30s and lived with her husband, twin girls and the baby, neighbors say. one neighbor says he observed a man wearing a motorcycle helmet go in and out of the house around 2:00 yesterday afternoon but he didn't think anything of it. because he didn't hear any screaming or commotion. at 3:00 p.m., the woman's husband came home and that's when that neighbor heard screaming. >> the back door was open and the front door was open. >> reporter: what did you hear? >> him screaming, yelling. >> re

good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori.e tell me they don't have many leads in this case but from what they gathered at the scene, they believe the suspect vehicle is a 1998 to 2000 sedan. they don't know the color but they say there's possible windshield damage. that's pretty vague description. they are looking over their evidence to see what else they can determine. just before 2:00 a.m., those 911 calls started coming in from people who were driving in the area who spotted a man down in the eastbound lanes of capitol expressway near seven trees. officers arrived and he was pronounced dead at the scene. they were able to determine that he was hit by a car while walking but the driver did leave the scene. investigators did a canvass of the neighborhood, searching for anybody who may have witnessed the accident. there's not a crosswalk where the man was hit. it's also poorly lit when it's dark. homeless people say they see a lot of jaywalkers. >> the homeless people, they don't use the crosswalks. they will just run across

janine de la vega joining us live from cupertino. what's going on, janine? >> reporter: dave, construction is about to begin here at the new apple campus site that you see behind me. there are plenty of signs and barricades up preventing people from traveling in lanes near north wolf and homestead. drivers say, though, in the afternoon, the backup gets bad. it may get worse with more changes coming. this map shows of a new apple campus and what it borders. it's surrounded by north wolfe road, tantou and homestead road. there are signs and cones on the streets telling motorists where to detour. crews have been working on the demolition of the old buildings on the site which used to house hewlett-packard. that's nearly done. but more work needs to be completed to relocate the public utilities and to get the site ready for the new apple campus 2. coon avenue will be affected. a section of it will be closed. there are also lane reductions happening on homestead and tantou. while some are frustrated with the changes, others say they don't mind because of what app

ktvu janine de la vega has been following this story from moffett field.anine. >> reporter: right now the crew from the 129th rescue wing is getting ready. they know a baby on board a boat greatly needs medical care. the rescuing will help the family. that is in the pacific ocean 900 knot call miles off the coast of mexico. at 8:00 this morning an mc130p aircraft will depart moffett field with the crew with the air national guard to join the rescue mission. another aircraft like it is already out there. last night four of its rescue men broke into the ocean by parachute and boarded the boat. they reported the parents are on board with another subling and their boat does not -- sibling and their boat does not have power. we do have video from a previous mission. they have been well trained and prepared for this mission. they have helped saved the lives for more than 1,000 people. the plan is to have pave hawk helicopters go out to the location. the crews will host the baby into it and take her to a medical facility. the aircraft that is leaving this morning

ktvu's janine de la vega live in mofette to tell us about this.s is a daring water rescue operation. what's going on. >> reporter: yeah, dave it certainly is. men and women of the 129th 129th rescue mission are getting ready for this complex mission. as you can see, they're loading this aircraft and in 30 minutes, they'll be taking off to help rescue a baby on board a boat in a remote location who desperately needs medical care. the rescue wing is going to help a family on a 36-foot sailing boat call the rebel heart that is in the pacific ocean, almost a thousand nautical miles off the coast of mexico. at 8 this morning, an mc130p combat shadow aircraft will depart mofette field with with the 129th rescue wing and head to cabo san lucas. to refuel the helicopters that will hoist the baby out of the 36-foot sailing boat. we found a blog online from who we believe is the family that is stuck on the boat. in it they say they are sailing around the world and took off in 2012 from san diego with two young children and in march were heading toward new z
