jay gray live in napa.. >>> now we do want to go to the latest in the investigation in that mass shooting in las vegas. >> the hotel where the with police about their new time line. news 4's chris lawrence is at the live desk to explain. what's the discrepancy here, chris? >> un, it's not just about what happened but when. the police released a new time line and mandalay bay says it cannot be certain that is correct. on monday the clark county sheriff says stephen paddock shot and wounded a mandalay bay security guard six minutes before the shooting started. it's a significant difference from what investigators said last week, that the guard interrupted paddock during the massacre. that's when paddock shot him. the revised time line does raise some questions about whether officers could have done more to prevent the shooting before it started. the guard was wounded and police have suggested he managed to call for help but it's not entirely clear if that happened. we know 58 people died in that shooting. hun

jay gray is standing by in alabama with a live report. we want to start with storm team 4 meteorologist with the latest on nate's track. how does it took? >> well not looking good as it's getting ready to make landfall. i want to go straight to the satellite. we're starting to see nate right now getting ready to make landfall. you see the eye. not very well define. it doesn't have much time to strengthen. once it hits land it will immediately weaken. the chance to make it to a cat 2 storm still there but growing close. still a category 1 we're seeing wind speeds at 90 miles per hour. this is a very quick moving system at about 23 miles per hour. notice what happens, expected to make landfall tonight. still keeping its intensity and then diminishing to a tropical storm as it heads into northern alabama and then we are up next. monday and tuesday we're expecting it to reach the mid-atlantic and northeast region. the biggest change to track that came out at 5:00 it shifted farther north and west but that doesn't mean our area won't be impact

jay gray is live in mobile, alabama, where its under a state of emergency tonight, jay. >> reporter: we're getting a bit of a break from the rain. it's been intense at times. this is just the beginning of what's going to be a rough time over night here. the storm did make landfall near the mouth of the mississippi river, just brushing across the southern most tip of louisiana and back out into the gulf. it's going to make a second landfall later in the evening somewhere near the mississippi, alabama border. we'll see intense rains, winds at 85 to 90 miles an hour. and the storm surge is big concern especially here in the mobile area, at mobile bay and we have been told we could see a storm surge of 5 to 10 feet. if that's the case, it could do significant damage here. at one point the fastest moving storm ever in the gulf. that means it's going to be moving out quickly. forecasters tell us by sunrise tomorrow we're going to see clear skies. it's supposed to be a beautiful day. hard to believe, but back to you. >> thank you, jay. >>> let's bring in now meteorologist glenn schwartz and

"today in the bay's" jay gray has been there since before the shots were fired. he joins us now with the investigation and where it stands. jay? >> reporter: good morning, scott. good morning, laura. this investigation is expanding. federal agents getting a lot more information from the cell phones and laptops that they have recovered from the gunman. they are also getting insight from those who knew stephen paddock best. fi [ gunfire ] >> reporter: -- for ten minutes, along the vegas strip, turning this outdoor concert into a killing field. this is what it looks like almost a week later, still an active crime scene as investigators search for evidence and an answer to the nagging questions, why. >> something happened in his head that he knew two weeks ago. no longer the guy that did that. >> stephen paddock's girlfriend marilou danley said he had mental health issues and would cry out, oh my god. they don't know of mental or physical problems that may have triggered the rampage. paddock searched for information on lollapalooza, a summer music festival in chicago.

nbc's jay gray gives you the latest from vegas. >> reporter: while police are certain there was only one gunman during the killing spree, they now acknowledge during the years he was collecting weapons and then as he moved rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition into place stephen paddock may have had some help. >> you got to make the assumption he had to have some help at some point. >> reporter: while investigators are now piecing together a timeline of paddock's life before the massacre, they're still no closer to a motive. >> we look for actual indicators of affiliation, of motive, of intent, and so far we're not there, we don't have those sort of indicators. >> reporter: what they do know is there was a significant amount of explosives in his car. thousands of rounds of unspent ammunition in his hotel room, and some of the guns apparently jammed during the attack. while they won't say what it is, investigators do say there's evidence paddock expected to survive and escape after the attack. more than 100 federal agents and police continue to search for evidence and answers.

jay gray is live in las vegas with the new leads investigators are following. jay?porter: hey, there, good morning, laura. good morning, scott. a lot of information coming from the review of cell phones and laptops. 12 electronics in all that they have pulled and what they are trying to learn more about paddock. listen, they know by reviewing the laptops, anyway, he had a room at a hotel overlooking grant park in chicago this summer, on the same weekend that lollapalooza was going on, the music festival there. they believe that he was reviewing, according to the laptop, events and hotels near fenway park in boston. investigators say that's a clear sign he was targeting a large crowd before he carried out the shooting along the strip. we also know that his girlfriend in this case, marilou danley is cooperating with the fbi as well as las vegas police. she told them that she believes he had some kind of mental problem that may have led to this, that he would spend days laying in bed screaming and yelling, oh, my god. investigators have reviewed his history, both physi

nbc's jay gray is live in napa with more on the unfolding situation. what's happening, jay? >> reporter: chris and eun, you're right. the deadliest week of wildfires in the history of this state. 31 dead. there's concern that number is going to climb. hundreds still missing right now. thousands of structures burned. tens of thousands pushed from their homes, in many cases homes they won't be abl these homes have been left as nothing but rubble and ash and that's across northern california right now. thousands of homes, tens of thousands moving into shelters and other areas where they can stay safe until it's time to move back in and assess some of the damage here. fire crews continuing to work along the frontlines and are making a bit of progress here. they're going to continue that work around the clock, they say, for as long as necessary. that's going to be a while. containment is going to take some time. getting it fully extinguished will be months in the making here. i can tell you, conditions not looking good for the firefighters moving into the weekend. the significant

jay gray is in las vegas and has the latest details in what is now the worst mass shooting in modern y jay? >> reporter: hey, carl yeah, we're right here along the the strip. in fact, you can see behind me where they locked things down here this is the area that no one is getting into or out of right now. this is where it all took place and there is still a massive investigation going on there, as you would imagine. we're learning more about the shooter at this point, knowing that there had been more weapons discovered inside his mesquite, nevada, home we know that that person of interest that police have been looking for has been identified and has communicated with officers she is out of the country and they don't believe she had anything to do with the attack here the fbi, as well as state and local police, are on the ground right here, and they are trying to find anything that may give them some indication of how and why all of this happened there are still people out right now, who were at that concert. can't get back into a hotel room, because it's locked down or trying to find
