he's the author now of two volumes of history, jimmy and rosalynn carter. the first the georgia years. 1924 through 1974. and now jimmy and rosalynn carter power and human rights. as i say, he was professor of emeritus at mississippi state. he's the author of three other books. alan gas, glasgow and the woman within and christopher gadsden and the american revolution and confederate colonel and cherokee chief. the life of william holland thomas. but it's biographies of jimmy and rosalynn that brings us here tonight. and, you know, i think there is probably better person to be in congress with stan lee than steve. steve has been to president carter since 81. he helped research and edit carter's book, keeping faith, and has really had a hand in every book too. carter has written or projects or classes at emory university, so sit back, enjoy its time to learn a lot about president and mrs. carter. steve stanley. thank you, tony. thank you, tony and it is really quite an honor for me to be invited to to come here. and i appreciate it. i especially appreciate it

and so he knew it was something from jimmy carter. e opens the envelope and there carter says, zbig, do you ever know when to stop. now? brzezinski was proud of this. no. he thought it was like signified his his the nature of his access to the president. but, you know, it was this relationship war carter down and by the third year of the presidency during the hostage crisis, zbig was beginning to win the argument. and you know, zbig was the one who was constant urging carter to respond to the iran hostage crisis with military force. and he was the one who persuaded carter in the end, reluctantly, to give a green light to the helicopter rescue mission, which, of course, turned out to be a disaster. and i think was preordained to be a disaster, could never have succeeded. brzezinski was in favor of force. and and it's ironic that over this issue, cy vance finally resigns, leaving brzezinski standing on the field. and this is, i think, one of the tragedies of the carter foreign policy apparatus. was there an october surprise, as in 1980,

let's get more on the life and times of jimmy carter we've, i'm the rose now. she's professor at the university of tennessee and she's an expert on the jimmy casa and joins us tonight from pittsburgh. welcome to dw professor. i think we got his presidency was viewed as a failure at the time in part because he failed to win re election to the assessment is fair. well, certainly growing up in winder georgia. that was one fact that i was aware of related to his one term administration that he was perceived as a sale president largely of course, because of the recession. stagflation and also the iranian hostage crisis. i certainly don't believe that that assessment is fair. i think that in the aftermath of vietnam and watergate that carter was a foundational glue that held our nation together and set it on its course to prosperity. you've noted that he was shunned by the washington a leads. other presidents have come in as outside as why did the jimmy call to have such a hard time as well, i think of that and in large part um he brought in what was referred to you

jimmy carter. well, in plains, georgia has a population of 634.i think i knew everybody in town and there were no girls my age in town. and of course, i knew who he was. i drank some. i knew him, but he was three years older than i am. and but his little sister, who was three years younger than i would stay in town for if we had a basketball game or some event at the school, she would stay with her grandmother, who lived in town, and we became really close friends. she was my best friend growing up. this is ruth. this is ruth and, um. but he graduated from high school at 16. we only went 11 grades back then and i was 13. well, there was no way i ever thought i would go with jimmy carter, and i didn't go with him until he came home. the lad before he was the first class, when he came home from the, um, naval academy and i went out with him the night before he was going to leave. but ruth and i plotted to get me out there with him because i wanted to. i had fallen in love with his photograph on the wall, in her room at home. and so she would call me
