john's lafayette square. a large outdoor area on the corner of h and 16th street, regularly used by the church for gatherings and for ministry. we were passing out water, snacks, hand sanitizer, masks. and trying to insure that the patio area was a place of respite and peace for the people gathered. it struck me that the patio had also become a deeply spiritual place that day. i called it holy ground. and while you may not think that episcopalians do this, we were literally laying hands on people and praying with them. we offered them spiritual comfort and support. people sat in the shade and on the steps, as a place of peace and respite. i would venture into the crowds right around that corner, offering water and snacks. you could hear the people with megaphones inside the park leading the crowd in protests like "no justice no peace, no racist police." for hours that afternoon, it was absolutely peaceful. and then some time after 6:15, things changed in an instant. suddenly, i saw and heard protesters running from lafayette park. i saw trails of smoke and billowing clouds of acrid smoke billowing through th
