i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. we are following a developing story in san jose. they found the body of a man in a waterway near blossom hill. bob redell has new details for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. to update you, about 15 minutes ago, the sheriff's department dive team pulled this man body from the alamitos percolation pond. they have the body upped that blue tent. san jose police there are detectives, treating this as a homicide. if you look to the left down the shoreline, the body was found off the shore where that yellow bobber marker was. it was submerged there. this was a result of a fight between this man and another man, with only one of them making it out of the water alive. police say they received a call around 6:00 that friends were reporting this man missing. officers searched last night with no luck. the dive team then arrived at sunup and they found the man around 8:30. it is not clear if he died of drowning or something else. as i mention, they are treating this as a homicide because they don't know if this was accidental

. >> and i'm jon kelley. this just in, the department of labor's monthly jobs report is officially out this morning. scott mcgrew is here to show us and, of course, give us insight into what they exactly mean. good morning, scott. >> well, good morning to you. the number we care the most about is 115,000. the american economy gained 115,000 jobs in the month of april. that is an enormously disappointing if expected number. now, the unemployment rate falls to 8.1%. that would appear to be good news. but there's something called the participation rate that we rarely talk about. and that is 63%. the number of people participating or wanting to participate in the economy and jobs has fallen. so people have stopped trying to find jobs, and that's one of the reasons you're seeing the unemployment rate drop. i often tell you to ignore the unemployment rate. this month, i'm especially telling you to ignore it because of the number of people who have left the labor force, the participation rate. so again, is 15,000, t

i'm jon kelley. and this morning we're following developing news. neighbors in complete shock over the killing of a mother and daughter in their very own home. bob redell live in pleasanton. and bob, the question right now is what are police saying about this tragedy? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. police are not saying whether this was a murder/suicide or a double murder. they're not ruling anything out. they do tell us that the father and husband is not a suspect. he returned home around 6:00 last night when he found his wife and daughter inside their home here on stacy court both had been shot. his wife was already dead, his daughter still alive, he called 911. she made it to eden medical center where she ended up passing away. the mom was amy freeman burton, 37 years old, the daughter ansley freeman 13-year-old. she along with her mother and father just moved to this neighborhood a few months ago from missouri. one neighbor describes them as having been a sweet family. reporting live here in pleasanton, "today in the bay." >>> 5:01 this

it is 6:00 on the nose, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. and new this morning, a man trying to escape an attacker plunges off a highway overpass. bob redell live near the scene in foster city this morning with details of what happened. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. we believe this man was a car-jacking victim trying to escape, not realizing that there was a dropoff when he jumped over the edge of the highway. this happened down there. looking maybe about 200 yards from us. that's eastbound 92 heading in our direction on the race portion there, it's just before mariners island boulevard exit. we're still trying to gather more details, but our general understanding is that a little bit before 2:00 this morning, this man who had been car-jacked ended up at that point on the road. he escaped his assailant, ran away, leaped over the edge of highway 92 thinking it'd be a short drop, turns out it was 30 feet to the ground. he was able to call chp while he was on the ground, they stayed on the line with him, were

. >> i'm jon kelley. a suspicious death in the east bay. right now castro valley police still on scene where a body was found almost 12 hours ago. christie smith live in that area on what's being treated as a homicide investigation. >> reporter: yeah, investigators have somewhat of a mystery on their hands this morning. what we know is a dead body was found in the home of the 4300 block of omega valley in castro valley. they've got multiple lines of crime scenes tape out here this morning across the street and in front of several homes. one deputy i spoke with this morning says that at 6:00 yesterday evening, they started this investigation that led them here. they discovered a dead body, they won't say, though, if it is male or female or the exact circumstances or if there was a call of shots fired or some other disturbance. now, this would be the first homicide of the year for castro valley. i'm told the coroner has not been here yet, although, again, they started hours ago. i do have calls into a sheriff spokesperson for details. as soon

i'm jon kelley. and this morning, crews mopping up after a five-alarm fire ripped through a complex, blasting flames 100 feet up in the air. bob redell live at that scene where a long list of homes have been reduced to rubble. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. these were homes under construction not occupied yet. and the fire department is still out here and you can see it's been seven hours since this fire started. it's good reason for them to be out here at this time. you can see in the rubble right there there are still flames perking back up. not sure if that's a gas or a hot spot that decided to kindle back up. there are three buildings that are immediately surrounding the destruction here still evacuated. anywhere from 75 to 100 people living elsewhere this morning. it was those two buildings in front of you that were under construction that burned last night. the heat was intense, so intense, it set off the fire sprinklers and two occupy buildings next door. blew out many wind

i'm jon kelley. after hours of searching, a s.w.a.t. team on scene still no sign of a suspect wanted in an oakland carjacking. this happened near the intersection of high street and santa rita street. police set up a perimeter there and called in s.w.a.t. teams. but we are being told at this point that search is off. police say that the suspect fled from a carjack being 2:00 a.m. they are believed to be armed and dangerous. christie smith just arrived on the scene. she will bring us an update on the entire situation in just a few minutes. >> new developments in another police activity we have been covering all morning long. stand-off in richmond involving a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted murder has just ended. the police had surrounded an apartment around 11:00. a man barricaded himself inside. we are told just within the hour he has surrendered and now has been taken into custody. also happening right now, live look at a wildfire burning about 80 miles from phoenix mere the town of crown king, arizona. the fire started

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. a gang sweep gone bad. three federal agents are recovering after being shot serving a warrant in petaluma. it happened about 4:00 a.m. at a home on mshg neil drive near south mcdowell boulevard where bob redell is standing by live for us with the latest. how are these agents doing now? >> reporter: they were hurt. good morning to you, marla. but all are expected to survive. her i.c.e. agents with the department of homeland security. they were executing a warrant in connection with a triple gang murder that happened a few years back. this morning's operation took place on mcneil in that home right there. this was one of several locations in the bay area taken down this morning as part of a broader operation. this particular operation went down around 4:10 this morning. neighbors said they heard loud shots fired, some of those bullets hitting the three agents. they're out front receiving medical treatment. one was hurt so bad, they hadai. all three have nonlife-threatening injuries. a neighborhood tells us a

. >> and i'm jon kelley. we start with developing news in the sierra lamar case. for the first time, investigators are naming a specific model car they're looking for in the disappearance of the 15-year-old girl from morgan hill. let's get to bob redell with the latest information. bob, what's happening there? >> reporter: good morning, jon. santa clara sheriff's office is asking for help finding a car they believe might be associated with the disappearance of this 15-year-old girl. they're looking for a car similar to the one in this image you're looking at now. it is a red, four-door, mid 1990s, volkswagen jetta with a black hood. they assembled different segments of surveillance video from businesses, homes, buses that showed that kind of car near sierra lamar's home the morning of march 16th around the time that she disappeared. they also confirmed this through tips they received. now, the car was also seen they tell us near where some of the evidence was found. whether that was by sierra's cell phone or a purse with her clothes, they won't say. in the video t

. >> i'm jon kelley. a long line of people waiting to see if they can finally get back into their homes after a fire gutted a town complex under construction in santa clara. the flames broke out just north of el camino real and scott late last night. bob redell has been there all morning long covering that scene where investigators are getting their first daytime look at all this damage. what are you hearing out there? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. because of the magnitude of this fire, the county arson task force has been called in to investigate. we know investigators do want to speak to someone who saw someone else at a corner beyond that fire truck over there pumping a liquid onto the construction site around 7:00 last night. that was a few hours before the fire itself started. it's not clear yet whether that bit of information is significant or relevant to the investigation. they don't know but they say it's also possible these buildings under construction did have electrical power. they jus

i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez. following breaking news in the east bay. police have surrounded a home on the 2700 block of ritchie street in oakland where a home invasion suspect is holed up. this is between mcarthur boulevard. christie smith has the latest for us. >> reporter: i just got here about ten minutes ago. what we know is there is a man that is barricaded inside of a home on the 2700 block of ritchie. this is not the street that you see here but the next one down. apparently he refused to come out when officers tried to make contact this morning. oakland police have blocked off several streets in the neighborhood. this is blow macarthur. they've had heavy weapons out, ambulances on standby. unclear in anyone is hurt. i asked residents if they were told to do anything specific and they said, no. one officer told me he thought this started as a domestic situation. but the man involved is a home invasion robbery suspect. it's believed this may not be a hostage situation. i also wanted to mention that nearby parker elementary school is on semi lockd
