joining me now is harvard law school professor, charles ogletree and jonathan capehart. let me start with you, professor in terms of the broad contours of what has happened down in missouri. it really underscores a dynamic in this administration that seems unique and i would love to get your thoughts on this. wherein the federal government is increasingly the protector of minority rights, whether it's doma and gay marriage or voter suppression efforts or rights in minutes or criminal justice prosecution and the states are the ones that have been pitted in the position of taking away the rights of citizens or limiting them. how unprecedented is that to your mind? >> well, this is very precedented because it happened before in the 1950s when people were marching and trying to be treated fairly. you can talk to congressman john lewis and he'll tell you about the beatings of blacks by police and how it affected them going across the bridge, a peaceful rally, nonviolent people. and it keeps happening again and again. we saw trav trayvon martin and black men being victims of s

joining me now, msnbc political analyst jonathan capehart and an allred from ksdk in st. louis. ann, you're out there. i will start with you for the latest on this. we have the police saying essentially michael brown instigated a confrontation and the shooting apparently, they are saying came in response to this. you have a friend of michael brown saying he was there, watched it happen. that's not what happened at all. are we any closer now to getting a definitive accounting of what did play out? >> no. i think the lack of details is what continues to kind of insight the issues that we have seen so far over the last two days. 47 arrested. teargas dispersed into crowds. rubber bullets shot into crowds. then right now we have just gotten word that a preliminary autopsy results have been released saying that michael brown did die of gunshots, plural. they didn't say how many. we won't have the final results including the toxicology for four to six weeks. today they were supposed to name the officer involved. the chief of police said i will release it on tuesday. today he said he wi

joining me now, ryan grim washington bureau chief for the washington post and jonathan capehart, thanks for being here. >> thank you. >> ryan, the last government shutdown was a disaster. why on earth would republicans start talking about it again even? >> i think what is most interesting about the talk this time around is who's doing it. you know, notice that we haven't heard from ted cruz. we haven't heard from the more far right groups in washington that led the effort the first time around. and instead, we're hearing from people like mitch mcconnell and marco rubio, the kind of quote unquote responsible elites that like to say that they're upset about the extremists who are kind of taking over their party. and i think it's -- i think those two folks and a couple others are just kind of out to sea at the moment. i think that mitch mcconnell's comments indicate that the race in kentucky might be a little bit tighter than he wants it to be. he doesn't quite feel like he shored up the conservative base. so he want to hint at a gust shutdown to get that out. notice you haven't heard from
