nbc's julie tsirkin joins us from capitol hill. former house members, both who served on the ethics committee, former democratic congresswoman from maryland, donna edwards, and from pennsylvania, charlie dent. julie, today's house ethics committee meeting canceled, so what does that mean for this report on gaetz? >> yeah, ana, a source confirming that to me and seemingly it is because republicans decided to cancel that full ethics committee meeting. you can imagine they are finding themselves in a weird spot right now. this committee, as i'm sure your other guests can tell you, operates behind closed doors. it is a bipartisan 5 and 5 split, a panel that has spent multiple years investigating the sexual misconduct of matt gaetz's alleged drug use, after the department of justice dropped -- decided not to pursue charges against him. steve scalise, the number two house republican, was actually just asked about this. he said very plainly that president trump, president-elect trump, will get the picks he wants on his cabinet. but as for

julie tsirkin joins us now. are republicans right now when it comes to deciding who will be the next senate majority leader? >> reporter: well, just moments after president-elect trump posted that message, rick scott, one of the three contenders in runny to succeed mitch mcconnell said he 100% agrees and he will do exactly what trump is asking any leader to do. rick scott has been giving endorsements from maga world, elon musk, sitting senators, as well. he is the longshot running against the two johns, as we call them, the number two current republican in seed senate leadership and senator john cornyn of texas, who, by the way, urged trump publicly not to win ahead of wednesday's leadership elections. clearly, trump is not clearly heeding that call. the thing is that selection happens up by secret ballot and closed doors. they have to get a majority of republican congregants, they have 52 seats, they might have a 53rd if dave mccormick's racing pennsylvania's coffee. we will see what happened but we will see wh

let's get to julie tsirkin who has reaction from the latest cabinet picks. i'm glad you are here at 30 rock in new york. what is the reaction of matt gaetz's withdrawal from consideration? >> it was widespread relief. we had been talking about this for eight days, that's how long the nomination was. we were talking about it during that period of time that senators on both sides of the aisle and namely republicans were in full freak out mode over the prospect of someone like matt gaetz who many served with in the house and they had personal bad blood with him, an an agency that once investigated him. when he withdrew his name, it was surprising to some senators. at least five of them, we have their names, including mitch mcconnell and a new senator, john curtis from utah who were hard noes on gaetz. it became clear that even if he were to go through the gruelling confirmation process that his chances of getting confirmed were dead on arrival, even before the house ethics report had come out. now with the nomination or potential nomination of pam bondi, you ar

. >> i am saying this report here from julie tsirkin, donald trump said on truth social, "any gop senatorss should support recess appointments." so, brendan, talk about the importance of recess appointments and why he would want that. >> early on in the administration, the president will try to fill all of his cabinet, as well as start putting into place some judges. they have decided they want to find whatever way they can do that as fast as possible, for whatever reason. one way you could do it not just one appointment, but several all at once, is what is called a recess appointment, which is what happens when congress is not in session for longer than 10 days. this goes back to where donald trump doesn't quite know how some of this stuff works. the democrats would have to go along with recessing congress for more than 10 days. this is something they could filibuster, so the likelihood this is going to happen is unlikely, but it shows you the aggressive nature with which he wants the senate to act, he wants them to act very quickly with a lot of people. i guess they could theoretically c

joining us now julie tsirkin who is in pittsburgh.l us about the importance of allegheny county and the race for the white house and senate. what are voters telling you where you are? >> reporter: stop us if you heard this before. allegheny county could decide whoever wins pennsylvania at the top of the ticket. it is because this place is fascinating. this particular location that i'm at, it's northwest pittsburgh suburbs. this polling site, bottom floor, biden won by 16 votes in 2020. that's one district. the top floor is a different district. trump won by 23 votes. this is as swingy as it gets. this area had gone for republicans, mccain, romney, switched to clinton, then biden. question mark this time around. i spoke to voters of all political stripes, all demographics, a steady stream coming in person to the polls. a county official expects 500,000 people to show up in person to vote today. that's out of a million registered voters in this county. i spoke to one voter named diane. she's 65. a life-long republican who started to vot
