meteorologist kari hall spearheads our heat coverage, and kari, how long can we expect this heat to continue? >> it will continue throughout the day and we'll start to feel those temperatures coming down tomorrow. before we even hit noon, we are feeling some of the temperatures where we should be for the high temperature throughout the afternoon. right now in concord, it's 82 degrees, and all clear there. the excessive heat warning continues until 9:00 this evening. it mostly includes the inland hills and elevations above 1,000 feet. that's where we will have the driest conditions and also the highest fire danger. for the interior valleys, we have a heat advisory in effect. that's all of these areas shaded in red where we could reach up to 103 degrees. and we are going to continue to have unhealthy air quality so the spare the air alert continues for today, especially for the east bay and south bay. we'll talk more about this and how hot it gets coming up a little bit later. >>> thank you, kari. >>> firefighters are battling the wildfire and the heat in the east bay. crews spent their time a

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. ari, you were covering hurricane katrina, you were in it. this sounds like it's on par to be almost as bad. >> the bad thing about this hurricane is it won't just move in and move on, it's just going to sit over the next several days. so even into next tuesday and wednesday, we could still be talking about this hurricane. by then it will most likely be downgraded but still looking at a very powerful system, and they did not have a lot of time to prepare because this did strengthen so quickly. so we'll continue to monitor that. as we bring you back home, we're looking at some nice conditions. as our inland temperatures get ready to heat up, places like this will be very popular over the next couple of days. the mendocino coast, the clouds and fog have rolled away, and we're also seeing that live in tiburon and it will be all clear there. livermore at 74 degrees and san jose at 72 degrees. oakland at 63 and our high temperatures in the south bay heading into the upper 80s for gilroy, and

kari hall, you've been watching the radar. just yesterday morning the topical tropical storm hunters went out there and we've seen this explosive manner on this system that has developed as it continues to move closer to the corpus christi area. if you have family in central texas, along the coastline, give them a call. make sure they have everything they need to evacuate. we are still going to see this getting even stronger over the next couple of days before it makes landfall as the possibility of a category 3 which means wind speeds will be over 120 miles an hour. by late tonight it looks like it will be inland and still by tomorrow through the afternoon could be a category 1 and there's the potential this could just sit in the same area or may move back out into the gulf of mexico and intensify once again. it needs that very warm water to become stronger and you may see that even into next week. so this will be a potentially dangerous situation for everyone in this area covered in yellow. that's where we could see anywhere

we bring in meteorologist kari hall for a closer look. >> we'll have some clouds and fog along the coastline and that will be the area we'll still have some fog throughout much of the morning. i want to show you what the computer models are doing with cloud cover at the time of the start of the eclipse. we do see that there will be some clouds for the coastal areas. while we will get some sunshine and the darkness as we head through about the 9:00 or 10:00 hour for many of the inland areas so that will be something that we will have to really watch for with the visibility and the cloud cover as we head throughout the morning and temperatures will be cooling off as well. a lot of interesting things will be in effect. we'll be talking about that coming up in my next forecast. >> sounds good. we look forward to that, kari. >> in the east bay astronomers will open their doors for free. exactly what will you be able to see here in the bay area? >> you'll notice a dimming in the light of the sun. i say it looks crisper. i think the more notable effect is the shadows will look sharper or modified.

let's check in with kari hall and a look at the heat in the bay area today. >>> right. we normally start out with temperatures in the mid-50s but we are now already at 68 degrees in the tri-valley with clear skies. 59 degrees in san francisco. we do still have that marine layer, the clouds and fog that will be rolling by as we get a look at the air quality. it is going to be unhealthy in the east bay and the south bay and moderate air quality in the north bay as well as the peninsula and the coast. we'll be watching out for the high ozone levels and some high heat. we'll take a closer look at the numbers coming up in a few minutes. mike now is tracking a new crash in the east bay. >> i am, kari. it sound like it's not a big deal but i wanted to mention it. you see the green speed sensors. anything will be a surprise and folks coming off of that richmond -- san rafael to richmond, eastbound 580, the crash. it sounds like everything is off to the shoulder but we'll watch for speed sensors and an update if anything changes. b.a.r.t. takes you under the bay. that's just fin

we were talking with meteorologist kari hall earlier this morning. she was looking over some of the numbers and in the tri-valley they've already had nine days over 100 degrees. livermore is supposed to hit 102 today. if we stay on this trajectory, we could be on track for the record number of triple-digit days. san jose has just issued a notice. they've opened cooling centers between now and 5:00 tonight. we have them on the tv screen. bascom, camden, mayfair and roosevelt, all five of them open until 9:00 tonight. if you're in a place that doesn't have air-conditioning, it's getting really hot in there, the city is asking you to head on over there. in san ramon, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> you can track the weather anywhere with our nbc bay area app. there you can find the forecast for your exact neighborhood. it's a free download for iphone and android. >>> we're getting reports of a fire and smoke that can be seen over parts of oakland right now. firefighters are at the scene. it started as a car fire at edge of west oakland and interstate
