meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temperatures for us. kari, what are we expecting today? how is it looking out there? >> it looks pretty good. temperature wise we're starting to cool down. our air quality and what we're seeing with all of those fires burning, the butte fire still very much putting a lot of smoke into the atmosphere. where that smoke travels, it's away from the bay area. so we are still looking at some good air quality today. a lot more people are getting out and enjoying it, but moderate air quality for the coast and the bay. pretty good elsewhere across the bay area. just keeping that in mind as you're heading out the door this morning, antioch with temperatures in the low 60s and a mostly clear sky throughout the morning and warming up into the afternoon as here we head back into the 90s. we'll get a look at our wide range in temperatures coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute around the bay area? >> it's looking like the sensors did tell the tale, the crash or disabled vehicle has been cleared from highway

. >> first let's go to meteorologist kari hall looking closer at the dry conditions and what this means to our water supply. kari? >> yeah. this is not just a california problem. even areas where we get water imported from other states it's bone dry as they're dealing with the highest level of drought across the region. the dark shades of red shows the drought we are seeing right here in parts of the north bay and the east bay. it's all the region and our reservoirs continue to deplete as we've seen extremely low reservoir levels across the bay area especially in the south bay. take a look at some of these numbers where we are seeing some of the water sources that we have here locally now only at about 24% of the capacity for our historical average. we're seeing this across the state as these water levels drop very rapidly and we're going to be dealing with some hot temperatures which we know increases our fire danger and there's not going to be much water to get to try to put out those fires. that's going to be a really high concern especially as we go deeper into our fire season. that

. >>> i am meteorologist, kari hall. those dangers are growing as the drought conditions worsen. i will break down the all-new drought monitor that just came out minutes ago. >>> the grim search in south florida suddenly put on pause. the structural issue halting the effort to big through the rubble as joe biden is set to arrive. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. >>> it's thursday morning. good morning to you. thank you so much. >> we started with a live look outside with an all-new report showing just how bad the bay area's extreme drought conditions really are. let's go to meteorologist, kari hall, looking at the drought conditions and what it means for the water supply as well. >> july 1st marks the beginning of our water year and it ended up bad for the bay area. last water year in santa rosa, we only made it up to close to 13 inches of rain, and that's 20 inches below normal. look at some of the numbers. only five inches of rain for livermore and san jose, a amount we should get this time each year. as we look at the drought data, it's bad for us here

let's get to kari hall who is sifting through the new drought data for us. >> it comes out every thursday, and it compares how much rainfall we have measured and compares that to the historical average. we don't get any rain going back in history in july and august, so it's not going to change. the category of drought we are seeing right now will most likely not change until we get rain again and head back into the rainy season. we are seeing the highest level of drought in parts of the north bay as well as the east bay. it extends into the northern and central valley so we will see, unfortunately, as a result of this a lot of high impacts especially to our food reservoirs and also to our air quality and wildfires. this is coming as the temperatures are ramping up. we will see heat building for the next couple of days. some spots in those high impact areas with the drought will be dealing with temperatures well over 100 degrees, and some spots reaching as high as 115 over the sacramento valley. we will be tracking this and talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari.

we'll get to traffic but first meteorologist kari hall is here to talk about what folks can expect for their return to work. >> yes. it's going to be like the past few days we've had. really nice weather for the bay area, so as you're starting out the door this morning, expect it to be back to where we were yesterday. it's going to be the last mild day before our temperatures heat up. unfortunately tomorrow we are heading upward with a lot of our inland valleys reaching into the upper 90s for the week starting on wednesday. we're going to be watching out all of that to work? >> where i was yesterday us. welcome back. no commute right now, very easy drive. we expect folks easing back into the week, but we see a little bit of slowing out of the altamont pass and this is more traffic than we had all morning yesterday through the 7:00 hour. we're looking over here towards the bay bridge toll plaza. i-80 no slowing but there is debris around hilltop drive. there may be clothing in the roadway but i will check to make sure it's nothing more. back to you. >>> new concerns closer to home over

we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall to look at all of this. , what kind of air quality are we talking about when it comes to the areas near the wildfires? >> right now it looks a little hazy as we get a look at tri-valley from dublin and a little bit of a brown tint to the air. we have a computer model that can model in the wind direction and where the smoke from those fires are going so we do see will 'light shade of blue and the smoke travels away from the fires, the three large ones in northern california, but also there's one off to the south and east of here in the sierras. as we can so, the smoke does get close and we'll see in parts of the east bay, the tri-valley as well as parts of the north bay some brown tint to the air, even going into tomorrow, but then as we look at some of the surface smoke we've seen a lot of this smoke staying away from the bay area, so as of now the smoke is higher up in the atmosphere, but that could all change if we see some nearby fire spark over the next couple of days. marcus. >> all right. thanks, kari.

meteorologist kari hall is here. >> looks pretty good. we've enjoyed some nice weather across the bay area. in the tri-valley looks good. all clear as we start out with temperatures again mostly in the mid-50s here and the slow warm up as we enjoy some sunshine. temperatures headed up to upper 80s. a little bit warmer than yesterday in spots like the tri-valley and inland east bay but still looking at upper 70s and low 80s down to san jose. >> the commute has been quiet. on the chp traffic report there were a couple of areas recovering from overnight crashes down in the south bay. it cleared out just in time. that's good to here. tri-valley drive times moving along nicely. westbound on 580 about 19 minutes. southbound from 680 about 10 minutes. i'll take a closer look how the rest of the drive times throughout the entire bay area are doing coming up in just a few minutes. >> just when you got used to being maskless now you're being told to put it back on. this is in most bay area counties even if you're fully vaccinated. >> we spoke with

. >> meteorologist kari hall joins us now with more this morning. how are we looking with those lightning strikes? >> yeah. we're still monitoring, but the threat of the dry lightning is now off towards our south and east over parts of the southern sierra, we can see all of those lightning stripes that had been popping up. and there was one near lake sonoma earlier this morning. as we are still monitoring for that potential with lightning without the rain, we call that dry lightning as those thunderstorms have been moving through due to some monsoonal moisture. we can see all of those unique looking clouds that we don't always get to see here across the bay area, especially for the inland areas. and it feels muggy outside. it's 77 degrees. we are going to see our high temperatures today reaching into the mid-80s and then coming back down later on tonight. so as we take a look at all of our micro climates, some warmer air to start out the week, even mid-90s for parts of the south bay as well as the inland east bay. then for the north bay we're mostly

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that for us. kari what are we shaping up for today. >> it's going to be another nice day. all kinds of weather in a short distance across the bay area. cool and foggy near the coast will continue as we take a live look at the golden gate bridge. looks pretty good right now. we're not getting the mist and drizzle and as we take a look at our high temperatures today, going to reach into the upper 70s for santa rosa as well as heading over towards parts of inland east bay. concord 84, 68? santa cruz and 70 in san jose. we'll see changes headed towards the end of the week and we'll talk about that in a few minutes. how is it looking for the commute? >> pretty good. i did get a little more detail on concern about this crash over here in pleasanton. the rest of the bay green sensors and new incident on a surface street off 101 but we'll check that and let you know if it affects your drive. eastbound 580 not a big way. the lanes away from the dublin interchange are open but on the shoulder actually down

meteorologist kari hall monitoring those temperatures for us. kari, how are things looking for us right now? >> well, we do have to be really careful this weekend and we're looking at those large fires to the north and to the south of the bay area and as of right now, the smoke may cause a brownish tint to the sky. our computer models showing some of that smoke moving in, but it is in the upper levels of the atmosphere and hasn't yet began to affect our air quality. near the surface it's looking pretty good as that smoke drifts away from much of our area towards the east. if there is a new fire that gets going closer to the bay area our air quality will be affected. but once again we are in with some westerly winds that's pushing that smoke off towards the east. we'll be watching the air quality as well as our temperatures that will continue in the same pattern we've seen from the past few days. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> mild as we expect light volume because we are just before the holid

kari hall, these dry conditions making dangerous scenarios as we head into the fourth of july holiday. >> july 1st is the beginning of the water year. i want to show you how we left it, some of the rainfall deficits over 20 inches for santa rosa, and oakland almost 11 inches. san francisco, almost 14 inches of a rainfall deficit. they are only measuring five inches of rain in livermore as well as san jose. when we look at this and how it compares to normal, we only made about a quarter of our normal amount of rainfall last water year, so today we get the drought data coming out and i will have that update coming up later. >> thank you so much, kari. >>> the fourth of july, not just about barbecue and beach time. firefighters are also getting ready for what may be a busy weekend, and given the dry conditions, they are asking everybody to ditch the fireworks. kris sanchez is live for us in san jose. this is where important training takes place today, kris. >> reporter: yeah, there's a two-day live wildfire training happening for firefighters so they can make sure they are ready for what

i want to check in with kari hall. new drought data coming out soon, and we have extreme heat and fire danger as well. >> yeah, we have got a lot going on as these temperatures ramp up, and it's going to be one where we all have to plan our day around the heat. as we are starting out with temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s, this is where we are headed today. stopping the timeline at 4:00 and it will be in mid-90s in the south bay part of the county, and getting even more intense into the weekend. i'll have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> the extreme heat kari is talking about bringing with it a higher risk of fire danger. >> and one place likely to be a lot busier as people try to find a place to escape the heat is where cierra johnson is. >> reporter: this will be one of the locations people will be escaping to because of the high temperatures that kari has been talking about all week, and it's going to get warm and with that comes the danger of fire. pg&e are doing something to help

meteorologist kari hall in the building this morning giving us a look at that forecast. how are we shaping up today? >> it's going to be another really nice day. we've enjoyed the cooler temperatures, and that's going to be the case right now as we get a live look outside in dublin. starting out, temperatures in the 50s. i am watching the air quality. we are seeing still some smoke that could be coming in this morning. and we are going to see it starting to clear out today, but where you see the shades of blue mostly some near surface smoke that will be moving in. then clearing out for tomorrow as well. the air quality should improve, but we've been monitoring all of these fires burning across the region. we are looking at some good conditions for your outdoor activities as we enjoy this cooler air. mike, you've been watching the traffic, anything popping up? >> i'm also enjoying the cooler air. nothing major, a smooth drive on the peninsula, an easy flow of traffic south bay. we talked about the king road off-ramp from north 680 may be affected. 84 has that scheduled ov

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that for us. how is it looking? morning as we were starting out with a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. well, you can barely see the bridge right now and that may be the case as you're driving and having to deal with that fog, the wipes of the windshield wipers. let's get a look at these temperatures. they're going to be wide ranging across the bay area with our temperatures in milpitas reaching 76 and 90 in morgan hill and in los gatos a high of 85 degrees. we're anywhere to upper 60s, 75 in fremont and we're staying in the 50s in half moon bay. daly city and for san francisco mostly some mid-60s. our for the bay temperatures will be from the mid-70s all the way up to 103 in clear lake. so we are still looking at excessive heat warnings there. the heat, though, for most of us easing off as we're seeing that high pressure fading and we're also going to see storm system approaching the pacific northwest. good news for the fires burning up there. going to see a little bit more rain in those areas and we're

now, the start -- we want to go to meteorologist kari hall. kari, these conditions right now, pretty ripe for a fire. we've had such dry vegetation and things can change very quickly. but temperaturewise it's been cooler. but the wind speeds are 22 miles per hour. so that could fan the flames of anything that gets going. it can make it move very quickly across some of those extremely dry areas. but we are once again seeing some cooler temperatures along with those breezy winds. skies are clear, and right now temperatures across the bay area are fairly cool but starting to warm up for the inland east bay, and a sign that also the relative humidity levels will be dropping here soon. so hopefully they do get some containment on that in the next few minutes because, as we go throughout the rest of the day, temperatures will be warming up, and it's possible that that fire could spread very quickly. so of course we'll continue to monitor that. marcus? >> that's what we don't want to happen. kari, thank you. >>> go, jeff, go, mark, go, waly, go, olive
