let's bring in karl rove, a family friend.s about the first time that you got to meet george h.w. bush. >> well, i was 22. i was the college republican national chairman, and i was summoned to the fourth floor of the republican headquarters. the college republicans were in the subbasement underneath the parking garage -- [laughter] so we were not exactly near the top of the power heap, but we were summoned for a he canture, me and my young executive director, a kid from south carolina named harvey lee atwater. and lee and i went up to meet the chairman. he was young and athletic and strong and charismatic, and he gave us a lecture about not messing up, not making mistakes, not making problems, not creating scandals, spend our money wisely, do the things we were asked to do. and at the end of the conversation, he said, now, boys, do either one of you have questions? and lee atwater said, yes, mr. chairman, i have a question, is it true you have a boston whaler with two 87 evenruds, and chairman bush said, well, yes, lee, i do.

but the conservative movement, people forget, and conservatives in the media were kept in check by karl rove, and if you got out of line, they got on you. and this is a turning point. now, i think what happened is i think rush limbaugh and ann coulter are the two most important. and they clearly got trump to reverse his decision. he was going to go to mar-a-lago right now, and they got him to change his mind about the wall. but what message does that send? once you realize that you can push a president, where does it go from there? >> well, becauasil, can you ima if rachel maddow, chris matthews, george clooney, robert de niro, the liberal sort of media celebs, had all criticized president obama during one week of his presidency? it wouldn't have happened, but could you have imagined that? that's what this was for the president. >> it did seem that that is analogous to what happened to the president this week. and you know, what's interesting is that when you look at his personal and political inner circle, he is becoming more and more isolated, and then that isolation is now carrying over i

john, thank you. >> jon: karl rove served as white house deputy chief of staff for former president georged fox news contributor. karl, you played a huge role in getting the son, bush 43, elected. talk about the interaction that he had with his father. this was a rare moment in american history for a father and son both to have served in the oval office. what was the interaction like between them that you saw? >> well, a loving father who had been there and knew the difficulties of the job. who knew that a president has to make decisions based on imperfect but constant flow of information. and so having been outside that flow of information and now as a former president, he was a supporter of his son but made no attempt to sort of influence his son one way or the other because he had been there and knew how difficult that job was and how vital it was to swim in that sea of information and make decisions based on what you knew and how you knew it. rather than just having advice tossed in from a former president. he was a constant source of support. the unconditional love he gave all of his

karl rove, merry christmas, nice to see you in austin.n where we are on the border wall. >> well, look, i'm not certain anybody can explain this. let's put it in context. the fiscal year 2019 federal budget is $4 trillion 470 billion. this fight we're going through that is talking about shutting down a big chunk of the government is president trump wants 0.005 for the border wall. the democrats have offered 0.0016 trillions or 1.6 billion for border security. so we got the difference between 5 billion and 1.6 billion. 3.4 billion out of a 4.4 trillion dollar budget. we're talking about shutting down 25% of the government. we have chuck schumer saying we'll never be for the border wall. yet he was one of the 80 members of the u.s. senate who voted for the secure fence act of 2005 which authorized the construction of 700 miles of border wall and there were 19 people who voted against it in the senate. it passed the house 283 to 138. schumer voted for it. feinstein voted for it. lots of democrats voted for it. now we can't find an agreement

and going into a 2020 reelection effort, you need to have a chief of staff like an rahm emanuel or karl rove who understand what was at stake in the reelection effort. is that has to be a focus of inside of the building. kennedy: would you do it? >> i would do whatever the president asked me. but there are much better people than me. i'm a good advocate on the outside and i love supporting him on your show, kennedy. kennedy: thank you very much. >>> the battle over border wall funding is just heating up and it might lead to another government shutdown. president trump is scheduled to meet tomorrow with senator minority leader chuck schumer and house minority leader nancy pelosi to discuss a big deal the avoid the shutdown. both sides remain very far apart when it comes to funding the border wall. the president is demanding a full $5 billion in seed money. but chuck and nancy have made it clear they will not budge on the $1.6 billion which was announced on june 21st by the senate appropriations committee. can they strike a deal before the clock runs out on a showdown and if not, is it really

charles: you know, herman, last week karl rove wrote a great op-ed, stopping the social listic resurgence little bit of a shot at the one of the latest gaffs of alexandria ocasio-cortez that we'll have years to deal with this, pop the corn, folks. are you not, are republicans not taking this seriously enough? i feel like this anti-capitalism push, particularly amongst younger adults, young americans, is a serious threat to this country? >> i would agree and republicans in totality are not taking it seriously enough. secondly as you pointed out, many people don't understand the difference between socialism and capitalism. all they hear relative to socialism, free, free, free. medicare for all. all for all. they don't understand that socialism means control. capitalism means freedom. capital means the opportunity to make money. and socialism means the opportunity to do restricted in making money. the republicans and the conservatives need to do a better job of messaging. they might start with, stop using that word capitalism because the democrats have done a good job of demagoguing the word
