i was just at the end of my rope and i met kathy and kathy gave me hope. she tied me into services at native american aids project and she referred me over to the health center. and it was the health center and nailtive american aids project together -- native american aids project together that really helped me to be where i'm at today and without these two organizations, without these two women, i wouldn't be where i'm at today. so it really is with deep respect, i thank these two ladies. so thank you. and now mark would like to say a few words about kathy. >> thank you. about three years ago kathy was hired at the native american health center. i didn't know her at the time or at least i didn't think i did. we started talking about the old days and how things were and it turned out she knew my mother and we talked more and it turns out she remembered me as a kid. during the longest walk. and i thought, wow, that goes back 1978. i'm 45 now. that story that you're under 40e isn't going to work anymore. no, honestly i think, you know, what we do at the hea

so this is one of the things that a recent institute of medicine report-right, kathy? -spoke about in terms of the challenges that the nation faces, as dr. clark has pointed out, with the two different systems of care. and are you familiar with the iom report findings? and can you speak to some of the recommendations that it makes? well, i think, you know, i think it makes recommendations regarding policy, that policies have to be rewritten so that these funding streams that are separated currently, you know, if there can be some co-existing financial resources that can be funneled into programs, and that has to come at a policy level. you know, it has to be written into specific policies so that those funding streams can be changed. what other recommendations, mark? well, treatment providers have to change the way they're viewing the client. instead of, "this is an addicted client that happens to have a mental illness and we're going to deal with the addiction first and then the mental illness later on," or vice versa, if someone shows up at a public mental health cli

kathy, what mark was saying, it really holds true for urban settings. i know that you're in an urban setting and that your program is a pilot program... oh no. it's not. it's been established for quite some time. we actually work with a continuum of patients, some who are severely mentally ill and are homeless and will not seek treatment, you know, in the community setting. so they-we have a pack team where the clinicians, the doctors, social workers, etc., go out into the community and try to find these people and give the treatment out on the street. we also have other levels of care where people-it's called a continuous care team-where people do come into the clinic for appointments but some, i guess, years ago they would have been institutionalized but now they're treated in an outpatient setting. and so they come to the clinic, maybe three, four or five times a week, and we provide case management services for them. we also attend to our patients' medical needs because many of them have pretty severe physical problems which leads to early death. an

before all this, tom crafton was a family psychologist, kathy was a nurse-- but something was .issingnomically we were in great shape, but it didn't mean anything. >> reporter: so in 2001 they sold their home in alaska and everything they owned to take their three kids to live on this 43-foot sailboat with a spanish name that means "new life." >> i realized that i really want to spend time knowing my children and raising them, not cleaning the bathroom. >> reporter: so began their seven year, 30,000 mile odyssey. setting sail from maryland they headed south to see the mayan ruins of mexico before passing through the panama canal and on to new zealand where they spent a year and a half. then in papua, new guinea, there were rural tribes to meet and in south africa, a mountain to climb. in all, they visited 23 countries before returning home to the u.s. and imagine doing all of that in this, a cabin that's so small at times you can touch the ceiling and almost the two walls. sometimes the family was at sea for up to 43 days. kalena was just 11 when they set out. >> you know, i don't rea

here you were doing your part trying to help other people and i am listening to kathy tell me not only were you trying to help people then, it sounds like you have not changed a lot on the inside. has it changed your views about america? >> one thing i would like people to know is we are almost 1 billion muslims in the world. tom, you give kathy a trip to learn how to sail.ke the kids and go sailing around the world. why? >> we were doing what life -- what everybody seemed to be doing. we were making decisions based on other people's values. we say making decisions by default. we were doing well in our careers, economically. but we felt like there was something missing and we wanted to spend more time together as a family with our children. >> you'll definitely be doing that once you end up in a boat, a 43-foot sailboat. how challenging was that as a family. you had little kids at the time, they are bigger now, for you guys? >> it was a bit of an adjustment. first we moved into an apartment because we had our big home in alaska. but it was so important to me to be with my family, with all of us. and as they grew into their teenager years, i really wanted to be the driving force behind my family. it really brought us more close together. >> you also like each other, which is a great sign. >> yes. >> kallie, you're 18. from 10 or 11 to 18, this is a huge e
