ktvu's katie utehs just learned new information and joins us live from stockton. good afternoon, katie. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. you heard the gunshots. i asked the chief how many officers returned fire. he estimates that it was at least 20. those men and women are now on paid administrative leave during the investigation but the chief says the city will not be left uncovered. now, the amount of shots fired is daunting. they are still trying to determine who shot and killed the hostage that was killed and found dead in the suv at the end of the chase. >> the suspects continued firing at officers who returned fire until the gunfire from the suspects stopped. [ sirens ] >> reporter: we learned some key details during the 11:00 press conference with the chief. mere minutes passed before the robbers took the three female hostages. two bank employees and one customer in one of the bank employee's suv. those employees both fell or jumped from the speeding vehicle with gunshot wounds. they will survive. family tell us the woman killed is misty holt-singh, a moth

ktvu's katie utehs was the first reporter on scene and has now moved down the road, as traffic is backrmal. katie? >> reporter: claudine, they opened up all lines of 101 about an hour ago. we've moved off the highway, but the man tried to cross near the onramp where i'm standing. the patrol car was traveling southbound on 101 and struck him in the third lane. the patrol car finally skidded to a stop near the overpass. you're looking towards the area in the distance. the pedestrian hit the passenger side of the patrol car as the officer tried to swerve and fishtailed. the man rolled down the side of the car. you can see the blue marks on the door. i'm told that's from the blue jeans the man was wearing. the collision happened around 1:50 when chp says the man in his early twenties ran onto 101 north of rock road. he was responsive and talking, but didn't say why he darted onto the roadway. >> he was going directly, you know, perpendicular particular lahr to the lanes. he was not visible on the headlights until he was directly in front of the vehicle within the headlines, 10 to 15 feet i

katie utehs is joining us live. you're in red wood city.>>reporter: i spoke with chp officers and they said they're not searching the area. they were looking for four latino men suspected this this hit-and-run. one of them possibly armed with a gun. it all started around 5:15 on the san mateo bridge when the driver of the suspect's vehicle rear ended a burgundy porsche. news chopper 2 takes a look at the tow truck. you can see the victim's vehicle. the suspect then drove on a flat front tire all the way to the west of the bridge where they then pulled over, jumped out of the car and it is presumed they jumped the fence and that area is considered pure juan at the end of the bridge. we called the hotel and they didn't see anything. within the last ten minutes, we learned about the victim in this crash. >> we were told she was transported to a local hospital complaining of injuries and she's in her early 40s and expected to be okay. and the vehicle is registered out of redwood city. it's still early, but it appears to be stolen according to c

ktvu's katie utehs explains what happened. >> reporter: shoes and evidence scattered across highway 101s in san josi. >> they are shaken up. around 2:00 a.m. a california highway patrol officer driving southbound with a partner hit a man who investigator say ran onto the roadway north of the avenue. >> he was not visibility in the headlights until he was directly in front of the vehicle. >> reporter: this sec of highway 10 is six plains and the chairperson officer was traveling in lane 3 when he struck the pedestrian. officer swerved and fishtailed before impact of the you can see the dent where the parol car hit the man. blue markings left in the paint from his jeans. the car skidded another thousand feet or so before stopping along the shoulder. both officers then ran back to the crash scene to help. >> it was beneficial that the officers were able to get out and make sure that they were able to get emergency medical personnel scene as quick as possible. >> a latino money in man in his early 20s survived being hit. before being taken to a local hospital. >> a lot of those times collis
