here, wanting to confront kessler when he leaves. and again, it has been peaceful so far. this clearly is a confrontation that the counter protesters wanted to engage in to let their message be told. there antifascist, the message is not entirely directed towards kessler. it is also directed to the trump administration who they perceive as fascist. as well as a law enforcement. but right now, this as you can see is tangled up. it is all about whether or not kessler is coming out here and antifa trying to let their message be heard loud and clear. there was a smoke bomb toast earlier but it was sort of a nonevent. we have a bit of a chant, you can hear them. the rain is starting to set in, it is moderate but not clearing anyone out really. as in terms of the car which really is all about 500 to 1000. >> mostly for testing against the "unite the right" movement were they fans of jason kessler and his organization? >> these are all protesters, counter protesters against "unite the right". there against jason kessler. there against the t

jason kessler is the person who got the permit for this event.sted size of his event maybe between 100 and 400 people. he listed david duke, the former leader of the kkk, as one of the speakers here. well, 100 people didn't show up. 30 people didn't show up. david duke did not show up. neither did several of the other speakers who were supposed to be on that list. and while kessler told me earlier in the day he sees his effort here as one about protecting the 1st amendment and about protecting free speech and is not a racist message, several of the people who were in his group on that metro train told me they felt that white people were the founding -- forget the exact word he used, founding race, founding culture of the united states and anyone who wasn't a white america was somehow less american. this is a wholly inconsistent message delivered by an incredibly divisive leader who doesn't appear to be speaking for the folks in his group. and the question of what could be heard of their group, having circled this park a couple of times over the c

kessler was there, we saw some pictures of him marching through the crowds, what did he say?n't he? he spoke briefly, i didn't hear, i wasn't right next to him, and personally i think if you weren't next to him you couldn't hear him because he was drowned out by the protesters. my colleague was with him andi protesters. my colleague was with him and i understand he defended the actions from last year, the people in cha rlottesville, actions from last year, the people in charlottesville, and he also claimed oddly he was not part of a white supremacist movement, he wasn't racist, he was there simply for white civil rights. and this is not the end of the matter i suppose because you had protests in the north—western coast as well in cities over there, and so even though this hasn't quite turned out for the right wing as they might have hoped, it's not over, is it? i don't think this is the last time we're going to see these sorts of clashes and kessler also mentioned he would like to have other events in washington in the future. i don't know if his feelings on that have changed

even the fact that kessler says in his article that some of the president's comments about the trade "f" from many economists, i mean that statement right there, that is an opinion. i think it's important to keep in mind that some of the work that kessler does, i would give an "a" to. again, this is my opinion. and some, i think it's important to keep in mind that this is very much opinion. and so the fact checkers themselves have their own viewpoint and have their own opinions, and that definitely does come across in a lot of their reviews that they look at things. i think it's also important to keep in mind that presidents use the bully pulpit to try to drive their viewpoints, try to drive the messages that they're trying to get across to people. and sometimes folks just don't disagree. i mean for example, i think right now as a country, i think that we're winning. i would say that some of my democratic colleagues, there are some people who differ with me ideologically might say that we're not. that is just a difference of opinion. it doesn't mean that it's four pinocchios. it just

if you can make him out there, their leader jason kessler, he's the one holding the american flag. he's the one who was the principle organizer behind the rallies in charlottesville last year that led to all the conflict. he's the one that filed the paperwork for the permits for this rally to take place this year. let's talk about this. we have two very smart voices. paris and tara, you are both important voices here. you're both african-american. you're both republicans. you both feel differently about president trump and his role in all of this. paris, i want to get back to a conversation we were having before about perhaps the amplification of these voices. certainly, as we can see from these pictures, this is not a very big group of people leading this protest. but it was a much different scene in charlottesville last year. there were a lot of people there. could it be that after a year's worth of time that perhaps these voices are being suppressed to a certain extent, at least to the point where they don't feel comfortable coming out in large numbers to a protest like this one

the transformation took place right where jason kessler was talking about. the transformation to place with the immediate postwar amendments to the constitution in 1865, 1866, 1868. that was the beginning of the trade-off. that was the beginning of the trade-off of security. and not just physical security, , but economic security for liberty. the implementation of the 14th amendment through the courts and through the congress is what has led us to where we are. one interesting thing about the 14th amendment, jason did not represent exactly what the 14th amendment did. it was not just supposed to be -- it is not articulated as a race based amendment to the constitution. neither is prohibition on slavery, except as punishment for a crime. does anybody doubt the 13th amendment is what gave rise to the prison industry? does anyone doubt it is the 14th amendment that has created a situation where the courts can use the concepts of race to divide people against each other. in new orleans, what we have seen is the former mayor, mitch landrieu, and the current mayor
