komen race for the cure. hulk hogan was serving as grand marshall. today's race raised more than $1 million for breast cancer research and resources. reporter: the race for the cure is a celebration. it's a day of remembrance and resilience. >> all the survivors, all the people that are fighting it right now. reporter: tina was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. then it came back in 2007. ever since she's been running a gauntlet of surgeries and treatment. >> today it feels good. yesterday i was crying. because i am going through the journey. reporter: organizers say 15,000 people attended this year's race. 1,500 of them survivors. many others remembering the loved ones they've lost to this disease. writing messages of love and support. also carrying signs, pictures and banners. >> very emotional. i lost my mother and lots of great friends. reporter: some men also battle breast cancer and many more act as cheerleaders. >> it's been an amazing journey. she's a strong woman. i admire her for. that i want to be there for her. reporter: ani fran

komen race for the cure. and the hemmingway champion hulk hogan served as this year's grand marshal for the 5k run and fundraiser. organizers say one in eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, the most common cancer among women affecting 230,000 people annually. participants in today's events included those living with breast cancer, survivors, and their families. >> i just had to fight and, you know, i wanted to be here for my family. i have a 10-year-old daughter. so you know all these people love me and so i knew i needed to be here from that time till now, operations, chemo therapy, surgery i've been good. so i'm good to go. >> my friends and family decided to participate in the race for the cure as a way to kind of stand behind me and support me during my fight. i'm happy that i am okay now, but we are continuing it walk this race for all of the people who are still fighting. >> doctors recommend men and women do regular self-exams and of course contact a doctor if you find a lump. >>> seve
