"today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joining us now. kris, how is that young girl doing? >> it is really a miracle that that little 15-month-old girl was three blocks away from a fire station where treatment started immediately. she's now being treated at ucsf benioff childrens' hospital. the little girl was in the red sedan, you see in the video here, you see the people driving that car, rushing in to ask for help. it is not clear if the drivers were targeted or just in the wrong place. the frantic passengers were crying out for help from the firefighters there. this is video of the little girl being loaded into an ambulance, headed to the trauma center. a witness told us it was chaos. >> she was on the floor and they were putting, like, cpr for her so she can breathe. they're like, oh, my god and stuff like that. it's very harmful because i have a little sister, i wouldn't want that to happen to her. >> you can see a number of bullet holes in the right side of that red sedan the little girl was in. it's not clear if anyone else in the vehicle was hit. oakland police wer

kris? >>> all right. an extraordinary young boy from the midwest saved 20 lives through organ donation. now his spirit will move on in the fight against crime in the south bay. as bob redell shows us, the campbell police department is honoring his legacy. >> campbell police just welcomed its newest k-9 to the team. look at sam with his handler officer ben dixon. both finished extensive training and are officially on duty as a team. the dog needs a name and the department has chose on the name him rohen after rohen clark, a 10-year-old boy from michigan, who dreamed of becoming a k-9 handler himself. sadly, he died of a brain aneurysm back in february of 2022. his organs, however, saved the lives or more than 20 people across the united states, the youngest life being a 1-year-old baby boy, the oldest a 56-year-old woman. among those saved, this lady right here, remi ryan of northern virginia, whose brother is the chief of the campbell police department. she tells us she was within weeks of dying when she

. >> let's go to nbc bay area's kris sanchez in our newsroom. where does the investigation stand at this hour? >> it's still ongoing, but we know that san francisco police do not believe this was a random attack, though they aren't saying exactly why they think those victims were targeted. this is the scene where it happened, grant avenue and columbus avenue near broadway. san francisco police say it was about 11:00 last night they got calls about gunfire. a 23-year-old man died at the scene. officers found him lifeless on the sidewalk in front of a liquor store there. now, four other people who were shot are expected to survive, including one woman who was shot by the condor nightclub. we do know police collected a gun found in the middle of the street, and for a man visiting san francisco from the uk, hearing about a dozen shots in the middle of the night like that was pretty shocking. >> looked out the window. there was a guy being dragged in the street to a car. the car drove off. the guy got dragged back over to the convenience store and --

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is going to join us from san francisco. more from the high-from file voices calling for action. >> hi there, marcus. so this violent crime has really unnerved a lot of people here because without knowing who the suspect is nor whether or not this attack was targeted or it was random, people just don't know what to make of it. we did see the memorial near where bob lee was murdered on tuesday morning at 2:30 in the morning as he was walking on main street near the embarcadero. we talked with a few people who live in that area. they tell us that they expect to see property crime in their neighborhood and they see their fair share of people who seem unwell or off balance, but a violent stabbing does come as quite a surprise. >> i've been here for 18 years, and it happens once in a while, but it's pretty rare, that type of, you know, maybe robberies more, but murders, rarely. >> so the crime statistics do back that up. between 2019 and 2022 these are the numbers for the crimes in san francisco. there's been a 14% decrease in vi

kris, what's expected to happen next for her? i mean, this is tough. >> yeah, so she's 81 years old and she lives in san francisco. she tells us she got a knock on her door out of the blue for her from someone telling her that her home was to be sold at a foreclosure auction within the hour. she expects that now today the sheriff could show up to enforce an eviction order. this is rosemarie benter who has lived in her condo for 30 years. in july of 2021 she says she was pressured into signing a loan to pay property taxes, plus interest and fees and the $13,000 debt resulted in the fateful knock on her door this february. now she's putting up a fight with the help from nonprofit legal assistance for the elderly. >> i'm here to repossess your house, and i said, what do you mean? he says, well, unless you have $13,000 to pay off this debt you have, it's going to be sold in about 29 minutes. >> ms. benter contacted our office and we immediately jumped in to assist her. unfortunately, ms. benter contacted us just after the foreclosure

kris? >> reporter: marcus, so the constant question since joanne segovia was charged with alleged drug trafficking charges has been how could nobody have known, and if somebody knew, then why isn't somebody else being investigated? those are some of the questions that community groups are going to ask for today. the 64-year-old, joanne segovia, was in court on friday. today the naacp of silicon valley, silicon valley debug and other community activists will call for greater transparency about the drug trafficking charges against the office manager and executive director here. the san jose police officers association president told me she was considered the grandpa of the poa for her warmth the officers and their families in the worst of times, but that she is the only person under federal investigation. segovia is alleged to have received 61 shipments of a synthetic fentanyl to her home in san jose, which then she allegedly distributed to other states, sometimes using union resources. >> th

. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us. this has been a hotly contested issue for renters and owners for months. >> today oakland's moratorium is possibly on its last leg. landlords could have evicting people who are behind on their rent as early as next month unless something changes tonight. tonight oakland council members will finalize the wind-down of the city's eviction moratorium, which has been in effect for three years. it's set to end july 15th, but tenants behind in rent could be evicted in may if they can't prove that their late rent is covid related. so balance that, landlords could evict ten ends under just cause, however they have to show substantial damage or unreasonable behavior. some landlords have been pushing for balance in the policy, saying that some renters are abusing the protection policies and leaving them holding the bag. >> we're proposing a phaseout approach we think is reasonable and thoughtful in terms of avoiding an eviction cliff that could lead to dramatic homelessness and really allowing c

"today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is in the newsroom. some say it's time to drop the concord-minutemen. >> today students get a chance to weigh in on how to move forward. already 500 of them have weighed in on a survey. the mascot is a minuteman, he's armed, and the change stems from a 2021 policy of the unified school district to replace human mascots with non-human mascots. some opponents take extra issue with the fact that the minuteman is holding a rifle, which seems inappropriate in this era of school shootings. for supporters, the minuteman is a symbol that dates back to the american revolution. >> minutemen have a proud history, there weren't just men, there were women, there were african americans. >> i'm a former minuteman, that's my history. i went to school here, graduated class of '91. but i also want to make sure that we have a mascot that represents everyone. >> there's been a lot of back and forth for more than a year. at one point the school was really close to changing it to the concord crocodiles, but that got shot down

there are only 31 teams that still have the minutemen as their mascot. >> kris, thank you. >>> well, developing for you this morning, a purse snatching in oakland caught on camera quickly turned far more violent. it happened about noon yesterday near smith recreation center on park boulevard. the video showing the woman fighting back as two suspects tried to take her purse, which they finally wrestled away. when she runs after them, one of the suspects pulls a gun out and shoots her. one nearby shop owner describes the chaos and how her husband responded. >> she was fighting back really well for herself and then they took out the gun and shot her. we just ran over to see what was going on, left the store open. he ran there and called 911. he covered her gunshot wound, making sure that there was nothing -- you know, making sure that she was okay until the ambulance came. she was talking, alive, she said she didn't want to die and she was really scared. >> that victim is expected to survive. police are not saying if they identified any of those suspects. >>> oakland police also still l
