kris sanchez joins us live with what we're expecting today. good morning, kris. >> reporter: hi there, laura, just got new information from supervisor cindy chavez' spokes person who says this census question pushed back and the push to get more people to registered to vote is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of women gaining the right to vote and show of how much more we need to do. now, the concern is that a proposed immigration on the 2020 census could lead to fewer people being counted. one supervisor wants to make sure anyone who can vote does. here's some of the back story on that. the justice department wants to include the citizenship question to enforce minority protections under the voting rights act. 1950 census was the last one with the citizenship question and already california attorney general javier ba rer as saying it could be undercounted which could shift funding. the census bureau is already investigating how to fill in that answer using other government records and data. cindy chavez endeputy county executive will

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez with a rally about to get under way this morning. good morning, kris. >> folks should be arriving here in about an hour and a half. as you mentioned, this is the only i.c.e. facility in the bay area. it's at the contra costa county detention center. folks will gather at 7:00 this morning to not only decry the trump administration immigration policies but also how the sheriff is responding to that. the families together day of action is posted on facebook and at this point more than 700 people say they are coming here. nearly 3,000 people say they are interested. those are unofficial numbers. here's what we know about the detention center, 200 immigrants detained here on any given day and according to organize errrs allowed any outside inspection of those facilities. back in march, the east bay times reported that the sheriff banned community volunteers from visiting detained immigrants here and a month later we reported that the department started publishing inmate release dates allowing i.c.e. to detain them or at least track them up

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us from richmond with what the protests are calling for. folks say it could come out for that today. a lot of people there? >> reporter: hi there, laura. it is a much different scene from the one in los angeles here in richmond at the contra costa county west count detention facility. right now the folks are taking to the open mike having their say but all morning long they've been singing and chanting and marching with signs outside, what is the only i.c.e. center in the bay area. on any given day, there are 200 immigrants detained here and in recent months the contra costa sheriff started publishing the release states of the immigrant detainees. thereby allowing i.c.e. to track and detain them without the sheriff directly violating the california sanctuary policy of not using sources to aid enforcement. protesters say it is time for i.c.e. to go altogether and to hold local law enforcement accountable as well. >> to those who say maybe abolishing i.c.e. is too harsh. give me an alternative of how to train i.c.e. officials or the departmen

kris sanchez joins us live in san jose to explain how this could help everyone's wallet. good morning, kris. >> reporter: hi there, this is money that the county is already set aside for affordable housing but what they are going to do today is take the second of two actions that they need to do to get started on a plot down in gilroy. this would agabenefit particula seniors who are low income. let's look at the map of where this is, this is monterey street not too far from irvin court in gilroy. it is called the gateway senior apartments, it's enough land for 75 affordable apartments half of which would provide supportive housing for seniors with special needs. this is just $66 million of that measure a housing bond that santa clara county voters approved in 2016. in all of the supervisors will vote to create 465 new low income units, not just there in gilroy and also create a $25 million fund for down payment assistance for first time home buyers in the form of deferred loans. the median home price in santa clara county is at this point $1.3 million, which is up 26% over

kris sanchez joins us with a look at one of the dozens of facilities housing immigrant children that have been separated from their parents. hard not to have your heart go out to them. kris. >> reporter: it certainly is a difficult situation. lawmakers on both sides seem to agree on, that laura. a lot of activists will gather at city hall. under that united battle cry that families belong together and what they are doing is decrying these conditions. take a look at this video here. this is a detention center in texas where children separated from their parents waiting prosecution for being undocumented are being housed. nbc got a rare look at that detention center in brownsville, texas. the shelter has 1400 immigrant poise separated from their parents. the children are between the ages of 10 and 17. you can see more on that on the "today" show after the newscast at 7:00. we have another center that used to be a walmart store. these are provided by the government. there are 100 such detention centers and cases are backing up quickly with the attorney general's zero tolerance policy. co

nbc bay area kris sanchez is following the story for months. what will this mean for families, kris? >> reporter: hi there. this could mean more living space for growing families or maybe even some revenue generation for folks who have the space where they could grow. the historically building of a granny unit or an accessory dwelling unit as the city calls them was the cumbersome process in the city of san jose. according to the housing trust of silicon valley, there are 103000 single family lots that would be would be eligible for a granny unit which would mean 18,000 new living spaces in an effort to maximize the opportunity to create more housing, the city planning commission voted almost unanimously to suggest the changes, take a look at your screen. this is what we're talking about. the city manager will simplify the process for an avu and get homeowners who have an illegal unit to bring it up to code. and changes for zones where adu's are allowed and increase the max numb size of granny units and ease parking and setback requirements. we
