. >> kris sanchez live at the santa clara county registrar of voters. kris, we know more than 100 million people voted across the country. how are bay area numbers looking? >> reporter: they're looking pretty good. i'll show you what's happening right here at the registrar of voters office. the sorting machines are cranking. the workers have been working through the night, these are mail-in ballots still yet to be counted. as busy as it is right here right now, it was busier out in the lobby last night. this is the line here at the santa clara county registrar's office last night. the line of voters was out the front door, all across the front floor, the first floor. our bay area counties had significantly higher voter registration numbers and we'll show you how that translated into voter turnout. look at this map. it was around 29% for all of santa clara county, alameda, san mateo and napa counties, about the same there. san mateo was the lowest. that county went to an all mail ballot. voters were not only focused on choosing their next governor. we als

let's start in the south. >> we sent "today in the bay's" kris sanchez to where some of the heaviest that's morgan hill. how is it looking out there right now, kris? >> reporter: we're getting a little bit of a break right now, getting what kari hall and rob mayeda like to call the hair spray rain. it's very fine, kind of blowing around at this point, but it was raining as we were leaving the parking lot in san jose, and as we made our way down here to morgan hill, where we are this morning. in san francisco, the storm preps are aggressive. they're putting up storm bare areas inment so of the low-lying areas known for flooding. it is a tricky spot in the mission district. kari hall and the weather team have been forecasting heavy rain for that spot today and tomorrow. public utilities crews are also going out with giant vacuum trucks to suck out the storm drains and make sure that they are clear for when that water comes through. it can just kind of dissipate. here in the south bay, the sandbag stations are stocked for folks who need to divert rainwater. it doesn't take a lot of wate

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live there in paradise, where that storm preparations, they're all under way right now, kris. >> reporter: hi there, marcus. as you know, this is my first day here in paradise, and as bad as all these images look on tv, they are even worse in person. driving here even in the dark, such heartbreaking sights, and now the ticking of the clock is getting even more pressureful. now, a team of meteorologists are going from watching the conditions for the fire fight to watching for the storm that the nbc bay area weather team is forecasting for later this week. there is a risk of landslides, as that soot and the ash from the fire creates a water repellant layer, leaving that rainfall with nowhere to go, and then any rainfall will also make the careful work of looking for victims even harder. >> we have very, very fine ash in many of the areas that we're searching. you add water to that and now we're in a situation where we have kind of a muddy mixture. i think that may make the process of searching for remains, especially those almost completely consumed by

let's start with "today in the bay" kris sanchez. >> reporter: hi there. i was talking to these crews. they were going to resweep to make sure the leaves don't get caught in the drains. this morning this is what it looked like. a car got stuck in the water. a driver didn't realize how deep that water was at stockton and alameda. a driver got stuck and called for help. san joep say fire rescued that driver. city crews cleared that drain with a giant vacuum truck and moved the car but the intersection was cloetssed for hours. you can see how far the flooding goes out in each direction. you just never know how deep the water is or what is underneath. this driver takes a chance, which is not a good idea. the motto is, turn around, don't drown. according to fema, it only takes 6 inches to reach the bottom of passenger cars and that's when you can stall or lose control. we're talking about a foot of water or more that can make most cars float. that sweeper just went through. they were waiting for us to leave our locations so they can come around and clear this p

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking it for us. anything new? >> we know law enforcement is trying to use the fingerprints taken off that gunman's dead body ed to try to identify him as he walked into that borderline bar & grill with the gun and smoke bombs. he didn't have any i.d. on him, so they're also looking at any tattoos on his body to see if that can indicate who he might be. meanwhile, there were folks who made it out of that bar just in the nick of time with their lives. one of them captured the gunfire. the ventura county sheriff's department says that inside the bar is a horrific scene with blood everywhere. the shooting was first reported around 11:20 last night. people inside say it was just a regular wednesday night at the country bar when the gunman walked in and started shooting. there were hundreds had of people inside at the time. many of them college students. >> i'm pretty sure i saw him. i'll never get that picture out of my head. . we dropped and we heard the gunshots. >> our friends got the bar stools and started slimming

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from palo alto with another story involving some bad choices, and self-driving cars. really interesting one here, kris. >> reporter: we don't know if this person was in autopilot mode but the tesla is being towed from this shell station here in palo alto, this is where it was brought after a pursuit and an arrest by the redwood city chp. as we understand it from chp, the driver was arrested after officers allegedly spotted him asleep behind the wheel. officers tried to wake that driver up, but ultimately the only way they were able to stop that car was to put a patrol car in front of it to slow it down. officers believe this man was drunk, and it is not the first time chp officers have had to arrest someone in a car that had self-driving capability or autopilot. we do not know at this point if that driver was in autopilot mode in his tesla, but that part is under investigation. however, this did happen before. in august, a monterey man was arrested after crashing his tesla into a san jose fire truck. he told officers that he thought

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at san jose state, where students are signing a petition urging the school officials to change their minds, kris, this is something i know a lot of people are worried about. >> reporter: yes, if the number of signatures on that petition, marcus and laura, are any indication, the students are unhappy to the fact that classes are in session. let's look at that petition that's been going for a couple of days now. they wanted 15,000 signatures on that petition. at this point they have 11,000 and counting, since trying to make their case to the administration to cancel classes because of air quality again this week. you'll remember that san jose state canceled classes thursday and friday last week because the air quality was so bad. the university also handed out masks to students, and staff, and urged people to spend their time inside and to avoid strenuous activity outside. this week, the advice stands, but the classes are in session. san jose state statement reads in part "retruly respect the thoughtful perspectives that were shared by many s

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is where students are angry that class is still in session. kris? >> reporter: the air quality is noticeably better today here than last week, but there are a lot of students who say it's still bad enough that classes should be cancelled. >> i think it would be good to cancel classes, especially for those coming into the san jose area. >> reporter: that student hasn't signed this petition yet, but tens of thousands of others have, urging san jose state administration to change their stand. you can see the haze hanging in the air over at the san jose state/nevada and some fans opted to stay inside. thursday and friday, classes were cancelled and the university handed out masks and urged students and staff to avoid going outside. this week the advice stands, but the classes are in session. san jose state's statement on the petition drive reads in part, we truly respect the thoughtful perspectives that were shared by many sjfu students and other university community members. decisions to close a campus are never made lightly. we have made the decision

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at milpitas city hall with what the council is doing and it's fitting in with what voters want there, kris? >> reporter: apparently it was a pretty heated meeting here at milpitas city hall and in the end, the decision was unanimous, the entire city council voted 4-0 to come up with a so-called urgency ban to ban marijuana sales within the city limits here in milpitas. they also moved to have staff draft a permanent ban to go into effect later. there is a current temporary ban, but it expires in january and that's the reason for the urgency ban. the ban on marriage marriage sales was enacted when california voters said yes to legalizing marijuana. the city also scrapped a plan to come up with an ordinance allowing ten dispensaries and again the city council said no, though they said yes back in october. now, according to "the mercury news" reporter who was here last night, about 100 people signed up to speak here. we also have some of the letters people submitted ahead of time. most of them urging the council to ban marijuana in the city, s

nbc bay area )s kris sanchez is out there in the elements. but first let )s go to meteorologist kari hall. kari -- where )s the storm now? let's go to meteorologist kari hall. where is the storm right now? >> we are just tracking light rain as you get ready to head out for your lunch hour or throughout the afternoon. a lot of the heavier rain we have this morning has since shifted to the south and is around monterey, continuing to move away from the area. this is a break before a heavier round of storm moves in. so we are going to see the time for you to get out there and time for you to get your yard cleaned up before this heavy rain arrives. we are tracking it all with stormranger with splotches of green here and there, indicating some lighter rain. as we zoom into the south bay, you can see as you head south to morgan hill to gilroy, you can see the rain comes down just a little bit heavier, but overall, we are looking at some light rain here. as we go through the time line, going into the afternoon, still going to see a chance of showers

kris sanchez is live for what happened overnight. this is something that's really plaguing the entire bay area. >> reporter: yeah, i can show you there are skid marks at this intersection where one of those sideshows was busted last night. as you watch the video take a look at how close those spectators try to get to that action. this happened at gish road and i-80. san jose police, santa clara sheriff's department heard chatter that drivers were planning to descend on san jose and perhaps shut down the freeway. chp managed to keep the freeways open and running but drivers took to city streets instead. over on kertner avenue under highway 77, a crash. sheriff's deputies caught up with a suspected sideshow driver who was trying to flee. that driver was arrested. at oakland road and highway 101, another arrest. san jose police directed officers on the street as they spotted this suspect activity from helicopters above. communities around the bay area are battling sideshows. you might remember a few weeks ago we showed you these large c

nbc bay area kris sanchez is in paradise with what the timing of this storm means for crews and evacuees. >> reporter: they're working against the clock, because although we're seeing blue sky and sunshine, there are two storms coming, and that rainfall is going to make a mess of this kind of material. it's already hard for these crews to sift through the soot and ash. add the rain, and it's going to make for a very muddy mess. we caught up with the rescue -- search and rescue team out of riverside. they were here with dogs a few moments ago. they're going site by site and making markings of what they find so the other crews don't duplicate their efforts and they can keep moving forward. also a team of meteorologists is tasked with watching the storm that they are forecasting for later this week. there is a risk of landslides as the soot and ash from the fire creates a water repellant layer, leaving the rainfall with nowhere to go, and any rainfall, again, makes the very difficult work of looking for victims even harder. >> we have very, very fine ash in many of the areas we're searching

. >> we want to check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez as she's been watching and monitoring all of the developments. >> good morning to you. as you mentioned, we now know the gunman not only fired a weapon but set off the smoke alarms, elevating the chaos inside that bar with hundreds of people inside. there was somebody who was outside and captured the gunfire. the ventura county sheriff's department says the scene was horrific, blood everywhere. the shooting was first reported around 11:20 last night. young people were running from the bar into the darkness as law enforcement was still working to get into the bar in thousand oaks there. some of the people inside the bar say it was just a regular wednesday night at the country bar when that gunman walked in and started shooting almost immediately. pepperdine university put out a statement saying they know some of their students were there when the bullets were flying. >> our friends got the bar stools and they started slamming against the windows when we got out. >> they just tried to take cover. all we do is sit there and
