"today in the bay" kris sanchez. , you have been working on a series of reports all week on the solution for some cities. >> reporter: hi there, marcus. here in the city of campbell, one part of the solution could be adding granny units to give another possibility for increasing the housing stock. that conversation is going to happen here at the city of campbell council chambers this evening. in redwood city, mid-peninsula housing will break ground on a housing development for seniors. it will eventually provide 117 units on bradford street near the downtown area. a talked with a santa clara university real estate professor who said construction is really just one part of the solution. and if local communities want to have a say and local control, they need to act now. >> there's a lot of real estate developers that don't like rent control. a lot of cities don't like the idea of the state mandating zoning ordnances telling us how to develop our neighborhoods. but if we don't take care of the problems ourselves, others

kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with more on the pressure on the company amazon today. kris? >> reporter: right. laura, amazon's investors are going to meet today and vote on whether or not to tell the company to stop selling its recognition -- facial recognition technology to law enforcement and other government agencies. now, those investors will vote today on a few different proposals. first, one from shareholders who already said amazon should stop the sales altogether from government. and one that said they should study the effects and then report back before continue to go sell it. aclu is to disclose who is buying this recognition software and how it's used. amazon is telling investors that the recognition technology is a powerful tool not only for business but also for law enforcement. in fact, just yesterday santa clara county supervisors defended the sheriff's use of it, though without a formal policy. >> we have almost 2 million people here in santa clara county. we owe them a right to vie sraes. we need privacy. they deserve due process. we can use them in a caref

i )m kris sanchez -- in for laura. and i )m marcus washington. we )ve been following this story all morning long on today in the bay. nbc bay area )s pete suratos joins us live from san francisco. q: pete -- what led to the discovery of the body? pete answer: q: what are neighbors saying about it? pete answer: >>> we know it started with a missing person's checkup. they are looking for 73-year-old benedict. they found human remains inside that home. you can see investigators arriving in the past few minutes to conduct that investigation. we know sources said they smelled a foul odor on monday morning during their investigation. that's what prompted this investigation. and then at that point, that's when they located human remains inside of that home. and even said they found a bloody saw inside. a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to how this whole thing happened. >> even for the neighbors that live around there, but just seeing all that activity around them, what are saying they about all of this? >> as you can imagine, a lot of concern.

kris sanchez joins us live. kris, how soon can the drivers find relief?ivers will say not soon enough, marcus. oakland is known to have some of the worst roads in the country. a three-year plan to fix those with $100 million in funding. it is going to be a lot more official than these fixes by the so-called pothole vigilantes. they are going around the city and filling holes with street asphalt the last couple of weeks. 75% of funds will go towards repairs. the pluck of the work will go to outside contractors to sort of speed things along. each council member can prioritize the roads. they will have to tell the department of transportation by september. the fixes will not happen overnight. i've been asking which do you think needs fixing first? i asked where are the worst roads? people are saying oakland and east bay. the city of san jose is also fixing roadways. 30 major streets this spring. and 400 miles next year. >>> 6:36. firefighters in southern california in the midst of a fierce battle this morning. they are fighting a massive hay fire at a dairy

that's where we find "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez with more. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. behind this development sign and all of this lush green interior is a lot of really valuable real estate, especially in the line of the fact that google is trying to build a downtown campus. it is a nursely and teaching garden that's been part of the hedge park community for years. the owner filed development plans for the city to turn this lot into a 5600 square foot retail complex. according to the santa clara county tax assessor, it was about $630,000 in 2007. if you fast forward to 2019, the property is now just about a mile from where google is working to make that massive downtown campus a reality. today the public will have a chance to tell that planning director how they feel about this proposed development. but the site is joined for this kind of development. the staff recommendation is the project should be approved. community members held a rally in support of the garden. i reached out to the property owner and the person who operate
