nbc bay area's kris sanchez is tracking conditions in the north bay, one of the places getting hit the hardest. and we want to hear from meteorologist kari hall, who has been tracking this weather. >> we've been seeing the rain widespread and steady for much of the bay area. we've seen at times pockets of heavier rain picking up and moving into parts of the north bay from marin county right across the richmond-san rafael bridge. for the east bay, it is widespread with a few areas where you see the darker green, the heavier rain that's moving through. and we're definitely seeing that now over the santa cruz mountains, reaching more saratoga and eventually making it toward san jose, with lighter showers for morgan hill to gilroy. so we are still looking at waves of rain coming in, all of this moisture pushing across the bay area, and at times it does pick up quite a bit as it taps into that deep tropical moisture. another atmospheric river moving in with bay area rain and sierra snow that's really reducing the visibility in those areas. all of this drawn in by the center of this storm, t

kris sanchez is monitoring. mike is tracking slick road conditions. >> first over to meteorologist kari hall who has a closer look at the storms we're dealing with. kari? >>> we're seeing the accumulation of all of this rain with a lot of standing water as well as the rain that continues to fall. here is what to expect today. there may be isolated thunderstorms especially as we go toward late morning and some of the heaviest rain moving through right now. in the santa cruz mountains we see the highest rainfall totals but now some parts of the upper elevations as well as our other bay area peaks are getting snow and a wintry mix. the flood watch does continue until tonight, give all that water a chance to soak in and drain down to the low-lying areas and then we'll see the impacts of all of this rain we've had. as we get a look at storm ranger, we did have a wave of intense rainfall earlier this morning and now it's starting to ease up as you head out the door for much of the north bay. heavy rain through contra

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is joining us live from the b.a.r.t. station. you're tracking a problem that originally started in oakland? >> reporter: yeah, well, service is slowly getting back to normal, but for hours, right during the morning commute, several lines were shut down altogether or had limited service. again, the repairs on a damaged part of roadway -- or railway is now fixed, and things are starting to get back to normal. the issue first came to light about a quarter to 6:00 this morning in oakland and persisted throughout the morning. about 8:20 this morning is when things were fixed. a lot of commuters had to delay travel, transfer to buses, drive themselves to work or just stay home. >> this is all due to some track that is damaged near 12th street in an underground section of railway. we've had to shut down all of the tracks in the area so that we can do these major repairs safely. >> reporter: now, as he said, they were major repairs, however we don't know what kind of repairs they were, except they were to the rail line and the power had

kris sanchez is live in san jose. kris, you're seeing downed trees, a big problem there. >> reporter: kari, we felt some of the gusty winds you were talking about this morning and, inct, it's really still right now. just a few minutes before our last live report we lost our light because a gust came from out of nowhere. this is one of the trees that has come down in san jose. it's not the biggest tree but is something that could create a real hazard for drivers in the roadways as they try to make their way around trees like this and we know trees like this, no matter how big, they can bring down power lines and we're already experiencing a lot of dark neighborhoods around the bay area. the biggest impact is in the south bay right now where 65,000 customers are without power. 15,000 customers without power on the peninsula, in the east bay, 6,500 customers and about 6,000 customers are in the dark in the north bay. earlier this morning, we were in belmont where there was a mobile home park that experienced a lot of floo

. >> kris sanchez is live for us outside the meeting. it started around 9:00. is it still going on? >> reporter: the meeting is still under way right now, and these supervisors are shell-shocked as the rest of the community is. they talk about the impact this mass shooting has had not just on half moon bay but in the entire county of san mateo. a san mateo county executive said he'd be coming to board to ask for money for housing to keep these farm workers where they are, because this is where they have a community, where their children are in the school system, and are needed for that important farm work. san mateo county supervisors began with the names of the five men and two women killed a week and a day ago. they were also reflecting about what they need to work tword in terms of gun violence, farm working conditions, and affordable housing. >> the number of deaths attributed to gun violence in san mateo county between 2016 and 2020 is 170. while we have the second lowest rate of -- among california counties, this has cost us $2.5 billion or approximately an estimated $515 mill

here's nbc bay area's kris sanchez. >> reporter: hey there.ave to tell you all of this continuous rain opened up a lot of potholes around the bay area. you probably have some in your neighborhood, but the one that opened up on 101 north in redwood city was a nightmare for commuters. take a look at the line of drivers waiting for a tire change after hitting that same pothole on northbound 101 at wood side drive. that pothole opened up in the number two lane before sunrise, before it was light enough for drivers to see it on the road ahead of them. >> it was dark and rainy, and i hit a pothole on the inside lane, and it destroyed my left front tire and destroyed about 40 of our cars, about 40 of us pulled over. aaa knocked this out one by one. >> reporter: 101 reopened in full by 9:00 this morning by which time we did see people still stranded with flat tires. the good news is they can file claims with caltrans to cover the repairs, and you can, too, if your car is damaged by a pothole. with the break in the rain we're hoping for, crews will be

kris sanchez, a lot of downed trees right now. big one right behind you, kris. >> reporter: it's not the biggest one we've seen but it is big enough to cause an impact. you can see it is down across the roadway here. this is in the willow glen neighborhood of san jose, so not super major. enough to cause a disruption in traffic as people are trying to get through on a little two-lane roadway. wind gusts have been picking up. it was perfectly calm and all of a sudden a little gust kicked things up. these are the kind of trees that create hazards on the roadway and can bring down power lines. we do have an update on the power situation. we saw some traffic lights out as we were driving around the south bay this morning. 15,000 people on the peninsula, 6,500 people in the east bay -- customers, i should say, so more people than that. 5,900 customers in the north bay in the dark right now, so pg&e working to restore power around the bay area. we did hear from one of the espersons for pg&e, and they said to make surou are prepared to be

. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia has the day off.s is a difficult day to bring you the news as we do our best to update you on what are now three unspeakable tragedies involving firearms. we'll get to our coverage in just a moment. a lot of you probably also want to know what the weather conditions will be like as you head out the door today. we'll start with meteorologist kari hall. >>> it's definitely colder. in san rafael as you get ready to head out, still breezy and the temperature here in the low to mid-40s as a result of the more gusty wind in parts of the north bay but will be very slow to warm up as we go into late morning into the afternoon. once we do later on today it will be a nice one with santa rosa one of the warmer temperatures on the map reaching 66 degrees, upper 50s expected for the interior east bay and low 60s for the south bay as well as the peninsula. we'll get a look at our microclimates and talk about slightly warmer air in our forecast. overall, mike, it seems like a smooth commute. >>> 5:31 on a tuesday. i

as "today in the bay's" kris sanchez reports, that could create a silver lining for other fans who wants. >> reporter: this storm is not sparing anybody, and i mean no one, not even 49ers superstar george kittle. look at what he tweeted pg&e a couple of days ago. i've been without power for four days, a little help would be appreciated. just trying to prepare something for this week. they did respond saying we've got our offense, defense e and special teams on this, we've got our power back for 2.4 million people throughout the last two weeks, and we're going to get you and everyone else back as we can. the only people maybe hustling harder are the stadium crew getting the field ready for the game. they are using fans to try to dry the field out, as much as possible, and they're covering the turf which was just replaced a few games ago. it will be covered until warmups on saturday. trainers will then help the players figure out which cleats to wear depending on the field conditions. here is the silver lining to this stormy weather. die hard fans will be able to get better tickets. fair

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in san anselmo.s is a brief window to clean up the mess that's left behind. >> reporter: the rain has already started. you saw kari's radar and that little patch of green is really above us right now as the rain is starting to fall softly. they are used to flooding. they haven't had massive flooding in a while but they are prepared and you can see the sandbags and the plywood blocking some of the stores here on little main drag in san anselmo. the cleanup continues. the cleanup in san francisco continues. that's where trees came down, crushed cars and blocked rows of traffic. a lot of people working to remove trees so the traffic can be moving smoothly and so that the storm drains can do what they're supposed to do as well. one of the issues with the trees coming down, new yorking down power lines. there was one situation that was pretty scary for firefighters there. a tree came down on muni lines, brought those electrified muni lines on a car. luckily they knew what to do. take a listen to what the

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us with the action expected today. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus and laura. the water in the creek beds and riverbeds are receding now. we saw that very real danger as the water levels came up and the water was moving swiftly for folks living near river banks and creek beds all around the bay area. in the south bay we saw during the first rounds of that really heavy rain, valley water, the water authority, san jose police and san jose's new mayor himself going along creeks and rivers urging people to leave. many people did relocate and found shelter at warming shelters but that was temporary. valley water will hold a discussion on a long-term solution. the meeting is at noon on almaden expressway. you can find a zoom link if you want to attend virtually at valleywater.org. there's a similar discussion happening in oakland regarding the wood street encampment. the city wanted to clear unhoused people there and get them to safer places. however, there is still a temporary restraining order barring them from doing that. b
