first calls came in about two hours ago today in the bay's kris sanchez is live at the scene this morning. it appears several businesses damaged behind you. kris yes, this is a really dense strip mall here. this is just one part of the strip mall that you see here behind me. but this fire was so intense that as i was getting here, about 45 minutes after the first calls, i could see the flames from the freeway. now, firefighters right now are trying to make holes into the roof so that they can access any fire that might still be burning inside these businesses. they are going in through a billiards business. however, there are several businesses in, you know, right, one next to the other. and the deputy chief we talked with just this morning said that there's no way to tell at this point where the fire started, though there is an arson investigator on the way to do their work. of course, that is customary in this situation. now, the first calls came in about 345 this morning. quickly went to three alarms. there were about 60 firefighters here at the time. they doused the roof. they had to

today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us to explain how a $25 monthly investment may lead to a huge payoffe. kris. well, laura, the goal is to take that $25 investment into a whole lot of change. and these folks are going to organize. they're going to collaborate. and in order to help those 500 east san jose businesses take that cash and maximize their impact, the city will now create the tully road eastridge business improvement district. i want to show you where this is. it's encompassing more than those 500 businesses along tully road between east capitol expressway and highway 101 that includes the businesses on quimby road as well as eastridge mall. now, many of the businesses have already been working together to make that area better, and they secured a $50,000 grant through their city council person toward maintaining, landscaping and removing trash and graffiti to make the area feel safer and more inviting for customers. now with the creation of that formal improvement district, they now can have the additional authority to create a fund that each business will pay that $25 fee a

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is here with a look at why the utility says it needs more money. i mean, we've heard different reasons for different increases, but this time, pg&e says that they need to bump your bill in order to make back what the utility lost during last winter's major storms. there were 15 of them. you might remember the california public utilities commission will vote on the increase today. and if they allow it, your pg&e bill will go up about $6 a month. if you're thinking, didn't rates just go up? they sure did a half percent in on september first. and that's just the latest one. this year over the last ten years. pg&e rates have increased 110%. now, customers and watchdog group turn are asking when is enough? enough it's like, when is it going to stop? you know, is it just is it going to be every three months? every four months? it's just when does that stop? how do i know to how budget for our bills? $34 increase at the beginning of the year, customers were hit with another $4 increase in march. and there's going to be more before the end of the year. so

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us and chris, the district attorney of san francisco, says that she will make a decision on charges by the end of the day. yes. and in fact, in the last hour, we heard from san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins office, and that's when we learned that we would get a decision by the end of the day. on whether she will charge the accused 17 year old shooter from tracy as a juvenile or as an adult in the shooting, and attempted robbery of ricky pearsall. now nbc bay area sports reporter anthony flores is at the 49ers practice facility, right now, and he is asking questions about that. you can catch more of anthony's coverage in our later newscast, but apparently pearsall was at the practice facility on labor day yesterday, according to niners color analyst tim ryan, who said on knbr 680 this morning he was actually in the weight room yesterday, and he laid the whole story down for me and what happened? it's really thank god it's not worse than it was. and he was able to react in the way that he did in that split second. so we now know, as you men

nbc bay area's kris sanchez has been following this unusual actions that have been taken. it was hardly a mellow weekend in san mateo county, where sheriff christina corpus announced that she is now investigating the county executive for interfering with her ability to do her job. that was the sheriff's announcement on sunday evening. also, a call for san mateo county supervisors to investigate mike kelly for alleged interference with unions and bullying. kelly has not responded to our request for comment, but the sheriff told us she will take this complaint to the state if it goes unheard by the county supervisors. i sent a formal complaint letter to the president of the board of supervisors calling for the bullying tactics of the county executive, mike kelly, to cease immediately. let me make this clear. i will not tolerate further interference in my lawful duties as sheriff. this latest twist comes just days after the sheriff fired assistant sheriff mike ryan monahan, she says, for not sharing her vision for the department, but which some supervisors say looks like reta

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom with more on how the hearing played out. chris. well, it was quick, but it was rowdy as supporters of the golden gate 26, as they call themselves, they were lined up before the doors even opened at the san francisco courthouse. once inside, they repeated that call for san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins to drop the charges. lofgren sha'carri drop the charges now. dozens of them packed the hallway outside those courtrooms, chanting, drop the charges and free palestine. members of the arab resource and organizing center iraq were there decrying the serious nature of those charges over that shutdown. he says the shutdown is a protest tactic that's been used for decades. in other movements. a public defender who is representing one of the people facing a felony conspiracy charge says it's all protected speech. the charges are exemplary and ridiculous. i mean, 38 charges many of these defendants are facing, it's clear that there is an attempt here to discourage or intimidate people from trying acts of public civil diso

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us now from the newsroom with more. there is some urgency in giving san francisco police more power to crack down on the sideshows, because they're trying to get ahead of the growing number of people showing up now on dirt bikes. this was the scene a month ago when about 100 dirt bike riders swarmed the city, marking an escalation in this dangerous and destructive behavior. in one place, riders were able to get off their bikes, break into a store, flee the scene even faster than drivers could in a car. mayor london breed and the san francisco police. they want the dirt bike riders to be held to the same laws. more recently, dirt bikes have erupted onto the scene and have created a different challenge for the police department. much in the same vein, but different to some extent because they are far more nimble. both of these events should be described as nothing other than vehicle insurrections. it is lawless. today, the supervisors will consider extending how long the city can impound a vehicle and even sell it. if the

today, in the bay's kris sanchez is here to explain how a $25 a month investment may lead to a huge payoffwell, mark, as you probably heard, your mom say, little by little, little becomes a lot. some east bay businesses are banking on the fact that a $25 a month contribution by more than 500 businesses could create a lot of opportunity for change in their community to make that happen, the city council will take the first step toward creating the tully road east ridge business improvement district. it encompasses more than 500 businesses along tully road between east capitol expressway and highway 101, and that includes businesses on quimby road and east ridge mall as well. many of the businesses have already been collaborating. they've been working together to make the area better. they secured a $50,000 city grant toward maintaining landscaping. they're removing trash and graffiti in order to make the area feel safer and more inviting. with the formal creation of this improvement district, they would also get the authority to create a fund each business pays into, and then they can pay f

today, in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from san jose at the saratoga border. this is at the proposed location store right? kris. well hi there marcus. you can see some of the buildings here of the proposed location behind me. they are boarded up, all quiet now. but what you can see is how busy this plaza is already. not just here, but across the street. lots of different locations for businesses in this location already. i want to show you the map. in case you're not familiar with this area. we are on the corner of what is san jose and saratoga right there on the border. it's a 5000 block of prospect road near the westgate shopping center, which again is right on the border of san jose and saratoga. there are already several other large retail buildings at this location, and if approved, these buildings would be demolished to make way for a 165,000 square foot store. the first with rooftop parking and there are several parties already pushing back. first, there's the save west valley, a group of neighbors who say that this store is just too big for this locatio
