here in l.a.we work, where we live, where our kids go to school. we are back in our studio, which we had to evacuate on wednesday, that's our building right there, the el capitan. that is how close this fire was to our theater here. many of us had to leave our homes in a hurry. some of our co-workers lost their homes. that's hollywood. it's -- it's been terrible. it's been a terrible -- everyone who lives in this city knows someone, most of us multiple people -- families, friends, colleagues, neighbors -- whose houses burned down. and the truth is, we don't even know if it's over. we had 100-mile-per-hour winds fueling this nightmare. as of tonight, the winds are back. i think i speak for all of us when i say it has been a sickening, shocking, awful experience. but it has also been, in a lot of ways, a beautiful experience, because once again, we see our fellow men and women coming together to support each other. people who lost their own houses were out volunteering in parking lots, helping other

flying from l.a. county to moffett field this afternoon.hey came from three different shelters in southern california downy, lancaster and carson, all overwhelmed and over capacity due to the out-of-control wildfires. shelter workers say many of the fire victims coming in are either injured, burned or separated from their families. they've had hundreds of animals coming to them from the fires with no room to put them, which is exactly why we went down the 19 dogs and 11 cats that arrived in the bay area this afternoon aren't from the l.a. fire zones. rather, they were already at the southern california shelters looking to be adopted, and now they're in sf so the shelters can make space for all the incoming pets. tonight these animals will rest. tomorrow, a physical exam. they'll be ready for adoption at animal shelters across the bay area within two days. meanwhile, the san francisco shelter has already scheduled a second transport mission for next week in case the l.a. shelters need more support. they're also asking for the public's help b

an l.a.ounty supervisor demanding an independent investigation into the electronic emergency alerts for the fire in altadena and pasadena that killed at least 28 people and destroyed over 7000 structures. >> it's important to gather all the facts, so we have a complete picture of what happened and how the system was put to work to protect lives, and this work must be prioritized. >> all 17 deaths from the eaton fire occurred toward the western part of altadena. some people who live there say they never got an order to evacuate. >> i'm very disappointed and angry about it because i feel like had we gotten evacuation official notification, we would have acted faster. >> neera chao says she evacuated when neighbors called, saying they got a message to leave. bridget james and her husband brian say they also didn't know about the order. >> i don't know what their resources were. i don't know what their challenges were. >> the l.a. times reporting that some people in the area were not told to evac

so the l.a. animal centers have space for all those incoming pets. we need people to adopt the animals that we've got up here so that we can go down and take some more in stages from la, and to help people with that, we actually just launched a free puppy promotion, so that's helping move a lot of puppies really quickly, giving us space to bring in more animals. to prepare for the influx, the san francisco spca launched a free puppy adoption promotion that led to 71 animals finding homes this past weekend alone. the east bay spca also brought back ten dogs from la and is waiving all adoption fees through sunday. the san francisco shelter already scheduled a second transport mission for next week in case the la shelters need more support. and they're asking people if you'd like to help out to please adopt if you can, or foster perhaps a dog for a little while. that would be a huge help and make more space so they can have more animals coming in from la. and if that's not in the cards, then you can always donate as well. at moffett field, ian cull nbc

late this afternoon, l.a. county district attorney nathan hochman announced the postponement due to how the fires may have affected everyone's preparations for a hearing set to start january 30th. erik and lyle menendez are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole for killing their parents in 1989. the brothers say they committed the murders after years of abuse by their parents. d.a. hochman's predecessor pushed for resentencing after evaluating new evidence he thought supported the brothers claims. we have an update tonight on six survivors of a new year's eve fireworks explosion in hawaii. they're being treated at the arizona burn center in phoenix. doctors say they've begun reconstruction and the skin grafting process. the patients are expected to spend up to several months in the hospital. >> i think unbeknownst to anybody, there were significant traumatic injuries from flying particles and the debris that that was carried on the air by the explosion. and that's resulted in some infectious

the hughes fire now forcing evacuations in l.a.nty in that community at castaic north of los angeles. right now 50,000 people under evacuation orders or warnings. in the last few minutes, we heard the fire is burning more than 9,400 acres, burning very fast and quickly. but no buildings have burned. a 30 mile stretch of interstate 5 has been shut down due to the danger, and the red flag warnings in the area have been extended until tomorrow night. and here is reporter with the firsthand look at the conditions as the families in the community head for safer ground. >> you can see that smoke plume all the way down, when we were driving here on the 405. this area, a lot of families are trying to evacuate and traffic started to get backed up starting at the side right there and very tricky. and the road backed up lake hughes and parker, and also taking a long time to get off the alert there. if you're looking to evacuate, be sure to get off. if you're under order, be sure to go that way at this point. >> and a live look from high above

one of the major issues in l.a. was the hydrants running dry or had low pressure, which led to delays in putting out flames. >> we have to continue to be as prepared as possible. whatever comes our way with the challenges that we face and what southern california faced, you can never be too prepared. so i'm just committed to making sure we are as prepared as possible. >> reporter: mayor daniel lurie and the new fire chief say they have redundancies in place to prevent dry hydrants and low pressure. firefighters can get water from the standard hydrants which have the white tops. they can also get water from the high pressure hydrants supplied by three reservoirs. those have either blue, red, or black tops, and firefighters can also draft salt water from the bay. >> each of these hose centers carry 6,600 feet of five-inch hose. we can use relays to move this hose system very far into the center of the city. >> reporter: they can also use fire boats to fight fires along the waterfront. >> impressive that we can use bay

one of the major issues in l.a. was the hydrants running dry or had low pressure, which led to delays in putting out flames. >> we have to continue to be as prepared as possible. whatever comes our way with the challenges that we face and what southern california faced, you can never be too prepared. so i'm committed to making sure we are as prepared as possible. >> reporter: mayor daniel lurie and the new fire chief say they have redundancies in place. firefighters can get water from the standard hydrants, which have the white tops. they can also get water from the high pressure hydrants supplied by three reservoirs. those have blue, red, or black tops. and firefighters can also draft salt water from the bay. >> each of these carry -- we can use relays to move this host system very far into the center of the city. >> reporter: they can also use fire boats to fight fires along the waterfront. >> impressive that we can use bay water to help put out fires is something that is good for everybody to know. >> reporter: f

we do have an update on the l.a. county wildfires that forced evacuations, and a new tool for firefighters in contra costa county, but it doesn't put out flames. our jodi hernandez gets an up close look at what defender one is made for. but let's go ahead and begin with the fight over birthright citizenship. a federal judge today has temporarily blocked president trump's executive order. the temporary restraining order sought by arizona, illinois, oregon and washington was the first to get a hearing before a judge and applies nationally. four other lawsuits challenging the executive order have also been filed by california and 21 other states, along with a number of immigrant rights groups. the judge who granted the restraining order flatly dismissed the trump administration's legal reasoning to hear the judge from the bench say that in his 40 years as a judge, he has never seen something so blatantly unconstitutional sets the tone for the seriousness of this effort.. people have wanted to o this for decades. preside

a fox investigation shows the cuts to the l.a.hat a came from mayor with bass may have directly affected their ability to to fight the fires. william la jeunesse in pacific palisades. william, what's this about firefighters reporting to the firehouse without any if engines to man? >> reporter: yeah. what we were told by multiple firefighters, stuart, is when the call came out whether you're off duty or not, come on in. they showed up at fire stations around the city, and there were no vehicles. so while everyone kind of agrees nothing could have stopped this fire because of the high winds, it did expose some problems that hampered the response. >> many of our rigs that are sitting at our supply and maintenance because we don't have the resources to fix them. >> reporter: that's l.a.'s fire chief last year begging for more mechanics. why? when the palisades fire broke out, every available firefighter showed up. manied had no pusher truck, engine or vehicle the use. >> we have million if dollar rigs sitting at the yard with no mecha
