"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in palo alto with more details on this murder investigation. good morning. >> reporter: an international warrant was issued for kevin dahlgren accused of killing a family of four overseas. a czech television station is reporting that he is actually the nephew of the parents that were killed. police in the czech republic released a photo of the 21-year-old who has a facebook page that says he is from palo alto but is living abroad. he was on the run thursday. firefighters went to a home near pr prague and found a couple and their two sons inside. they realized quickly a violent crime had likely been committed. the fire didn't damage the home very much at all. neighbors say he had only been in the area for a few months. police ha

i'm laura garcia cannon. the pictures of the damage is staggering. the entire neighborhood, cars tossed through walls, the roof ripped off an elementary school. at least 91 people are dead including at least 20 children at the school. in just a few hours, president obama is expected to make a statement about the deadly tornado. he received updates on the search and recovery efforts throughout the night. now, last night, the president spoke to oklahoma's governor. he has already signed a disaster declaration promising more aid for the victims of the deadly tornado. so many people are reacting to it as well. we are hearing reports of the pope asking for world prayer and prayer for the people that are affected by the devastation. the loss of the tornado itself was so large, it completely just leveled entire neighborhoods. >> it has been so rough for everybody out there and parents still searching for their kids keeping hope alive. >> jay gray live near the hardest hit area with the latest on the search and rescue efforts now that daylight has hit. >> re

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia. we have breaking news in the east bay. the search is on for whoever old fire on 880 in east oakland killing two people. it shut down all north lanes for several hours. christie smith joins us from chp headquarters have the very latest. >> the chp tells us that they do have witnesses but they're still asking people to come forward who may have seen anything unusual on the through way last night in busy traffic. someone opened fire on a car killing two people inside. the freeway 880 shut down for hours northbound. the victim's car, a white porsche was hit on 880 on the jackson street on ramp. the driver died of gunshot wounds right there in the car. a passenger also shot actually staggered out of the car and on to incoming traffic and was hit by a car and killed. horrible scene. witnesses say they thought it was just a backup, a wreck or something until they started seeing people layed out on the freeway. 880 northbound shut down. chp and oakland police started investigating, frantic 911 calls started coming in about 10:30 f

i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. two of the survivors from the deadly fire on the san mateo bridge are doing better this morning. it is also sparking discussion on how to keep citizens better protected. bob redell joins us live. >> reporter: he wants to reportedly introduce legislation next week in sacramento that would prevent the kind of tragedy that happened here saturday night on the san mateo bridge. 1999 stretch lincoln town car that caught fire and killed five women was not required to carry a fire extinguisher. this bill would change that. limo was not required to undergo regular safety inspections. public utilities commission that regulates limos doesn't require inspections for limos carrying fewer than ten people, like the one saturday night. hill would like to dig deeper into that issue and see what could be done. geornga lost his wife, felomina. he is left to raise their children on his own. he believes she and her four friends would be here if this legislation was in place. >> the driver is to blame. >>

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live with a look at the details. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the questions keep mounting about the safety of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. in march, broken bolts were discovered. they broke when they were tightened. a new potential problem. this has to do with steel rods that are at the base of the tower. experts say inspecting them won't be easy. the san francisco chronicle is reporting that 400 or so of the rods could be vulnerable to cracking if exposed hydrogen from rainwater. they call it hydrogen wi. they could also be vulnerable in a quake. caltrans is saying it will make sure the rods are safe. access is difficult. the tower was loaded down on to them. what about the planned opening of the $6.4 billion eastern span on labor day weekend. >> what is driving the date is the safety, getting, and making sure that we have the right fix. taking the time to get the right fix and to be a

i'm laura garcia cannon. >>> i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news in the south bay to tell you about. an armed robbery and police chase ending with the suspect crashing right into a wall. police on the scene at the intersection of silver creek and yerba buena, near highway 101 where "today in the bay's" bob redell just talked to the officers. what are you hearing? >> reporter: good morning. san jose police believe they finally caught the woman they have been looking for for at least a month in connection with a couple of armed robberies of a couple of 7 elevens a couple months ago. she did the same thing but she got caught this time. she crashed her stolen bmw during a chase that they tell us hit speeds of 75-80 miles an hour. police have arrested her along with her two passengers. her two passengers, a man and a pregnant woman. all three taken to the hospital as a precaution. police tell us that earlier this morning, she used an eight-inch, 22 revolver to rob a 7-eleven at kirk and foxworthy. they immediately expected it was t

"today in the bay's" marla tallez is in the newsroom right now. she has details following david cameron speaking. >>> in my last report, i said that prime minister, david cameron, said that british intelligence may have had their eye on the two suspects prior to yesterday's attack. just into our newsroom, the "associated press" is reporting that according to a british government official, both men were, in fact, part of previous security services investigations for possible terror links. the official saying he cannot provide other details, because the suspect may face trial. the men are still in serious condition in a british hospital today. they are under guard by police and officials plan to interview them later today. one of the suspects caught on this cell phone video here which we have blurred simply because it is just too graphic. hi

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon.ay we could learn the hunt for a killer in calaveras county could be over. officials say a man who is in jail this morning could be linked to the stabbing death of an 8-year-old valley springs girl. the 42-year-old man was taken into custody in plaser ville about 45 miles from valley springs. today in the bay's marla tellez joins us with more on the potential break in the case. >> good morning. we have been covering this story since it first broke over the weekend. 8-year-old leila fowler stabbed to death inside her valley springs home on saturday. since then, this small community has been on edge without any movement in this case. that is until now. investigators saying they are looking at this man, 42-year-old jason wayrynen as a possible suspect. wayrynen was arrested yesterday morning in placerville which is just 15 miles north of valley springs after trying to kidnap this little girl right here. she's just over a year old, tried to kidnap her from her own home. this man is facing

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in station 18 with a look at all the damage there and a link to another overnight crime. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, jon. these firefighters knew exactly what that sound was. it was unmistakable. gunfire piercing the window of this firestation. this is firestation number 18. the window is where the bullets actually exited, hit another building across the street. we just shot some video from the rear of the firestation on 50th avenue here in east oakland. a window is out on the roll-up door in the back. firefighter i spoke with off camera this morning tells me they had just returned from a call, three of them, and were working inside when the glass just shattered. all three of them had to run. one of them told me it sounded like at least 50 rounds going off outside rattled nerves but otherwise those firefighters were unhar

i'm laura garcia cannon. this morning at daybreak, the search continues for a young girl from the bay area missing since mother's day. hundreds of volunteers getting ready to fan out in clear lake looking for 9-year-old mikaela lynch. christie smith joins us from san francisco. you have new details about the search? >> reporter: good morning. we are told that search should pick up some time around 7:00 this morning. today, more than 100 volunteers and police officers helping to find mikaela lynch. they may widen their search area trying to find her. mikaela is nine years old and has autism. family members told police the little girl has the mental capacity of a 1-year-old and cannot speak. she disappeared sunday afternoon while playing in the family's highland harbor vacation area. she had been playing with her brother in the yard and may have wondered off. volunteers and police have searched. they posted fliers all around. they have specifically looked along cash creek. police say she doesn't know how to swi
